Toronto symmetrical 5Mbps Wi-Fi tops performance list
(old news - 04:23PM Tuesday Jan 23 2007)
tags: wireless · world · municipal · networking
Toronto Wi-Fi service by Toronto electric utility Hydro Telecom is a project our users have been chatting about for a while, since they've been getting free service (though with some complaints of spotty coverage). The utility recently purchased the city's light pole network for $60 million and has perched Wi-Fi gear on every fourth or fifth pole. Dubbed the OneZone network, the service covers six square kilometers in downtown Toronto and is free to residents until full commercial launch in March. A new report touts OneZone as the best performing Wi-Fi network in North America.
"We tested 41 wireless networks in 14 cities, and the performance of Toronto Hydro Telecom’s One Zone, delivering speeds of up to 5 Mbps bi-directionally, was stunning," said Ken Biba, one of Novarum’s analysts. "One Zone’s performance is better than my broadband connection at home and, on average, five times faster than any of the other networks we tested. Most impressive was the fact that this exceptional performance is being delivered in the challenging environment of a dense urban canyon."
The OneZone service uses Siemens Mesh@vantage MR gear, which integrates wireless mesh technology from BelAir Networks. The service is free until March, after which it will cost $29 per month, $10 per day or $5 per hour. The network FAQ has additional detail.

You can find Novarum's complete wireless rankings here. Note that in their overall rankings list (which puts a heavier weight on coverage), eight of the ten networks are cellular. Philly's muni-Fi network came in second place in terms of broadband performance, which is surprising considering the volume of analyst ire that's been directed at muni-Fi network performance of late.

$29/mo for 5000/5000 wireless

is pretty damn good~

For anyone living downtown, or working long hours there, this'll be a pretty slick service

Is that $29us or $29cn?

If it's CN, even better...

since it's a Canadian service, the price per month would be in CDN funds.

There seems to be no caps (at least right now). Hopefully it will expand through the city (it's only available in the downtown core).

Once the commercial launch comes around, I seriously doubt you're going to get 5mb symmetrical for $29. Mesh networks have the same problem as cable, not enough backbone insertion. When you have 5 AP's sharing a single backhaul connection (which may also be part of another mesh network) and then maybe 20+ clients per AP, it doesn't take long before your backbone is all used up and it's crawling like dial up.

If they can truly manage to maintain a CIR of 5mbps to every client, I am going to convince my WISP to purchase that gear.

Now WAIT just a minute!

We all know that these metrowifi projects simply CAN NOT work.

We have been hammered by the pundits in this industry for the past year with prophecys of gloom and doom for any WiFi project deployed in a metropolotian area.

This is a hoax right? I can't believe it could work. I mean everyone I know who knows anything has said it won't work...

My experience wasn't that good

I tried in from two different places. I had full bars but pages took forever to load. I was able to find open wifi networks though (both places, yay!) so I connected to those instead.

Re: My experience wasn't that good

Where were you exactly in the toronto network when your service wasn't good? And what was the other network you started using?

I have no trouble at all where i'm at.

Where's Mesa Networks of Colorado rank?

Mesa Networks is servicing about 40 towns in the Denver Colorado area.

Residential plans
Basic .5M / .2M $35/month USD
Standard 1.5M / .5M $44
Premium 2.5M / 1M $58

Not 5M / 5M for $29/month CAD .
But OneZone only has 6 square kilometers of service?

Article states that they just purchased the posts, and that the service is going commercial in March. I would imagine they would be rolling out more around then. The current network covers the very dense downtown area, which makes sense for a starting point.

Fiber is cheap and abundant in Canada, so I imagine backbone wise it won't be a problem unless they're trying to make too large of a profit. Will be interesting to see how it turns out. I would imagine a cap would be put in place, either invisible or published, or alternatively bit torrent will be traffic shaped.
