Goverment announces they'll help split the bill...

The Canadian government has announced that in order to bring broadband to 100% of Nova Scotia by 2009, they'll be splitting the bill 50/50 with private industry. Approximately 78% of Nova

Scotia's population has broadband, though 200,000 residents and over 5,600 businesses are currently without. The project website suggests that the government considers broadband a utility:
The Government of Nova Scotia sees broadband access to the Internet as important today as paved roads, electricity, and telephones were in the past. Broadband access has become critical infrastructure needed to communicate, access information, and conduct trade. Broadband access is seen as critical to the sustainability and growth of our economy and quality of life.
With the recent closure of an RFP, six proposals are now being examined -- with WiMax being the most likely solution. The goal, according to government planners, is to make Nova Scotia "the most connected area in all of North America."

If they can wire the entire country with copper then they can rewire it with fiber.

Copper was paid for by Uncle Sam. This communication infrastructure was also a life line service vs. the scene of entitlement around unlimited free bandwidth and free content along with it.

It won't change anything.

A backwater place will just become a "connected" backwater place in 2009. I doubt it will happen anyway. Canadian governments as well as American governments have a talent at announcing things but not delivering them.

Haha someone from New York calling Nova Scotia backwater. That's rich! I guess you don't travel upstate very often, eh?

Umm...Alberta and Saskatchewan have already completed their rural broadband projects already. Not 100% mind you, and it wasn't all rainbows and unicorns getting it done, but pretty close and it got done.

For the rest of Canada, 80%-85% penetration is not unheard of.

Useless...

As someone who lives in Ontario, I think the money would be better spent simply evacuating the province of Nova Scotia, declaring it a national park, and relocating its inhabitants to the ethnic ghettos of Montreal.

A drain on society since confederation?

Sorry man, but your province is not the only one that feels slighted about Equalization payments.

At least Alberta has a strong growing economy and not only has the largest GDP per capita per province, but it also produces something more than just lame anonymous posters....

Sorry for feeding the troll but I honestly felt slighted. What's worse is that he slighted the wrong provinces in the first place... man.

Wait, I am a troll simply because you disagree with my views? Nice standards you got there.

As for being anon, well I have not been registered on this site for a couple of years now, and don't see any reason to, as I am not sure how registering imparts some magical, mystical aura of credibility. I have never understood that about this site. I see that instead, more often than not, the "anon troll" bit is a convenient way of simply brushing off somebody's views so as not to take the trouble of engaging with them.

As for my mistake, I have passed both Canadian history and civics with passing colors, but still make the mistake of confusing the two regions. I never claimed I was Jesus or something that you not grant me a simple mistake.

Re: Useless...

Well, no.

You misunderstood the mistake. I did not say that I do not know the difference between the two, but rather that I confused the two terms(prairie and Atlantic), as you have to understand that there are differences between the two. For example, sometimes when people ask you to look left and yo look right, does it mean that you do not know the difference between the two? Perhaps this is not a good example, as you will just say "I know the difference between the left\right etc."

okay, I have a better example. In your earlier response you said "I'm not even sure I should qualify this with a response". You obviously misused the term "qualify" in that sentence, as perhaps you were trying to say "dignify". No definition of "qualify" is appropriate for the usage you picked, and it is quite obvious that you simply confused "dignify" with "qualify", despite the fact that they mean entirely two different things. Now does that mean you have a single digit IQ score? No, right?

Re: Useless...

Actually, "to declare competent or capable; certify" is not the same thing as to "lend legitimacy", which is what Snickerdo was trying to say. To recognise and to legitimise are two entirely different things. The definition of "declaring competent" presupposes the quality and is thus only being recognised, while with "legitimisation", it is the act itself that is granting a quality which was not there previously. Subtle difference, but still a difference.

Microsoft Word has made abusing the thesaurus so easy that words are entirely losing their distinct meanings.

It's called establishing a track record of reasonable discourse. THAT's why you register. Since it's free, we can only assume you post for your own personal entertainment, and not to add to any discussion. Which is why people don't like to respond to anonymous posters with anything but, "take a hike troll". Personally (with this being an exception) I don't bother responding at all; being ignored is much worse than being insulted.

Yeah, you never claimed you were Jesus. And I am fairly certain I didn't put you up on that cross. Oh wait, that was you! Come down anon lamer, your troll brethren miss you!

I won't grant you a simple mistake, not when your opening idea was evacuating a province and displacing it's residents into an already over crowded and sprawl challenged area.

For someone who passed both Canadian history and civics you display a lack of respect for both when posting comments that sound like the worst of each, and then fail to stand beside those words.

Oh wait, let me give you a little frowny or something as well, that will surely push home my points. hummmmmm...

Who cares...still too $$$ for what you get around here

Who cares that Nova Scotia will have 100% broadband coverage in 2009, doesn't make this place any more appealing to live in. I'm sure this 100% will come with a ton of strings attached to those living in certain rural areas.

I remember actually visiting a friend had FiOS hooked up. A few weeks later I saw the local Telco running a new fiber line up the street. I inquired about residential fiber service and the guy gawked at such an idea and said "it would be years and years and years before you would ever see anything like that here"

...there is hardly 900,000 people in N.S....big whoop. I rather have lower prices on everything else day to day that most people west of the maritimes enjoy.
