STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) A city police officer was shot in his cruiser in a shopping center parking lot Friday.
A woman shopping in at the Target Center saw a man leaning into a broken passenger-side window of the cruiser before walking back to another vehicle, Lt. Michael Reece said.
The woman called police, who found the officer slumped over in his seat and determined that he had been shot.
The officer was taken to St. John Macomb Hospital, where he was undergoing surgery late Friday night.
"We're praying for him," Police Chief Barnett Jones said.
The officer, whose name was not immediately released, has been with the Sterling Heights Police Department for about eight months, Jones said. He is a veteran officer who previously had served on the Detroit Police Department.
