Wi-Fi flaw creates sluggish chain reaction?
(old news - 09:19AM Monday Aug 04 2003)
tags: wireless · hardware
A group of French researchers claims they've found a flaw in wireless LAN technology, though members of our WISP forum say "not so fast". France's Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique has released a research paper that suggests "anomalies" in the 802.11a, 802.11g, and 802.11b standards could result in one sluggish user slowing down everyone who connects to the same access point. The anomaly, according to scientists, falls in the lap of the CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Avoidance Collision) access protocol.

However, participants in our Wireless Internet Provider forum claim the French researchers are simply blowing smoke.

KICK THE HIGH PINGER!

Make the hotspots do what's popular on Counter-Strike servers around the world...KICK THE HIGH PINGER!

Perhaps hotspots should be segregated -- HIGH PING BITCHES and LOW PING BASTARDS.

Re: KICK THE HIGH PINGER!

I wish they'd do that on the Team Fortress Classic servers. I *love* being on a team with a dial-up n00b that has a ping of 2500. No way to kick him unless you have admin rights.

In some cases the servers would have to kick their owners for trying to run a 32-player Dustbowl game on a P3-500 with 128MB of RAM over a residential ADSL line.

Not sure if this is true.

IIRC, 802.11a,b, and g can run in several modes, and only one of them does the "equal access" thing. One slow user will certainly increase latency (because they'll be taking longer when they have the hotspot), but throughput for the faster points should not be affected.

Yes, it will increase latency, but throughout will be affected, at least from my experience. Being a recent graduate from high school, here's a case in point:

In the spring of '02, my local high school (Clarke Central) got a Cisco Aironet 350 Series Wireless Ethernet Bridge, and attempted to use it with their existing Compaq (now HP) N1000v laptops. My science teacher (Alexander Powell) had a cart chock-full of the above laptops (including the access point) wheeled into the classroom. Once the laptop was handed to me, I turned it on, and logged in.

Shortly after opening Internet Exploder, the laptop started to lose sync constantly. This laptop was, keep in mind, using Intel's Centrino mobile technology. As much as I struggled to make it resync (including rebooting the laptop a gazillion times), it wouldn't sync back up. Go figure.

They also recently switched to Dell, but they're only giving Dell laptops to the teachers that don't currently have laptops. Those that already have (Compaq) laptops have to suffer through the problems that they have, including students. Ouch. What a poor decision Clarke County made. They should have waited until they had the money to give all the teachers new laptops, not just teachers that didn't have them.

The sad thing is that they blamed me for it that day. Only the next day did they realize it wasn't my fault.

Because of this, I will never, ever invest in wireless technology. It is very evident from the above statement that 802.11x is not ready for mass adoption.

Intel Centrino was only made available this march, one year later than the timing your alleged story suggests...

This has already been shot down.

In the WISP forums, this "research" has already been put to rest. I'm surpried it made the headlines with it being shot down so quickly yesterday.

The wireless forum tag was not in place when I initially posted.

heh. we beat the french in a bocce tournament a few weeks ago. damn french. im not worried about slowdowns in wireless, they will always keep coming out with faster and faster speeds, im worried about them fixing the bug where every time there is a thunderstorm it goes out.
