And they say one person can’t make a difference
(old news - 12:18PM Thursday May 31 2007)

Robert Alan Soloway, named one of the top ten spammers in the world, has been arrested after using networks of zombie computers to send millions of spam emails. The arrest is for 35 different counts of mail, email and wire fraud, as well as money laundering and aggravated identity theft. This is the first time that someone has been charged with identity theft for taking over another person’s Internet domain name. As a side note, upon his arrest, "federal authorities said computer users across the Web could notice a decrease in junk mail," indicating that one person really can make a difference in the world. Psh. Knowing our system, he'll get a "don't touch a computer for 5 years, pay a $1 million dollar fine, and promise you'll behave in the future" sentence.

Basing that theory on Mitnick, I see. Mitnick's only crime was breaking into unsecured servers and humiliating the "computer security" employees of deep pocketed corporations. He actually did the Internet a favor by exposing primary weaknesses, but I would never put Mitnick in the same category as a spammer or ascribe the same sentence to them. They are in an entire class by themselves and completely useless to anyone. Spammers are the true nuisances who should be punished excessively, not people like Mitnick.

Nope. I'm basing my theory on the fact that our judges are all old and have no idea of how a computer works, what spam is, or anything.

Actually, having had cases in the federal courts in both Seattle (where this guy is) and Tacoma, the courts are extraordinarily tech forward and the judges and staff extremely competent about technology. I doubt the judge in Seattle will have a difficult time understanding these issues.

You forgot theft (computer manuals) and possession of illegal equipment.

While he might have done the world a favor, he went about it the wrong way.

I don't think dumpster diving and social engineering constitute theft. I was not aware one could illegally possess equipment purchased legally. There is a lot of communication gear for sale on ebay, I believe the gear Mitnick had was made illegal after he was kidnapped by the FBI.

If I am wrong please let me know.

He "socially engineered" his way into a few companies and physically took manuals.

Why send him to jail? He is just a guy with the capitalist drive to make money. How dare government stop someone from making money?

Re: fat hope

Without a brain, zombies cannot function unless they are already set to execute at certain intervals and automatically collect emails.

Even then zombies are quickly identified and sometimes shutdown depending on the circumstances.

The biggest advantage now is that this individual cannot make anymore zombies.

Someone will take his place but at least we got one of the big bass, and it shall be cooked well done.

Yes, this is more of a witch hunt. While I think spammers should be prosecuted, shouldn't they also fine or prosecute the companies who use his service as well.

Glad they got one guy, but I really do hope they punish him more severely than Mitnick or his type...

Spam is one thing, but stealing someone's identity, now that right there deserves some serious attention.

Whack-a-mole goes on... I really doubt that there'll be a "serious reduction" in the volume of spam - sure be nice though.

Re: Useless

Yes Indeed. Just because the guy's in jail, doesn't mean neither his spambots have gone away, nor will not spread even more. What's to keep him from even making money while he's in the pen (if he goes.) I'm sure he wasn't pulling this off by himself, so he probably has little minions who'll keep the Zombies going. I personally think the guy should be flogged at a Microsoft Convention and made to read his own spam for the entire length of his jail term (again, if he goes.)

Actually it's nothing like whack-a-mole. It's like....fighting crime....which is pretty effective if you take the time to do it. Up to now the US has had the power to bring down spammers, but hasn't done much. A lot of spam is generated from major players in the US. If we can bring down the big guys in our jurisdiction we can make a real foot print in reducing the amount of spam we get in our inbox.

Fighting terrorism and fighting spammers are completely different. By your logic we should not have any law enforcement and let everyone do what they want, because fighting crime only produces crime.

Maybe it's working...

I haven't really had a problem with too much spam, it seems to me most of the spam filters work pretty good. I've had the same email address for 11 years, so perhaps it's been taken off lists since they've never hooked anything from me.

Robert Alan Soloway, Lock his sorry a$$ up!

Artist sketch of Robert Alan Soloway
Ill-gotten gains from four-year spamming operation: $772,000+.

Cost of attorneys for Robert Alan Soloway to defend himself against felony charges handed down by a grand jury: $500/hour, easily.

Smiles on faces of internet users everywhere at prospect of making an example of one of these lowlife scumbags: Priceless.

Obviously, Mr. Soloway is innocent 'til prov-en guilty' in a court of law. If, however, he is in fact prov-en guilty, I suggest he raise some cash by putting himself in a padded suit and allowing internet users to pelt him with rotting produce at $10/minute, then broadcast it on YouTube.com. Heck, I'm a nice guy -- I'll even let him retain the streaming-video rights for that. He could be a star on YouTube, instead of (allegedly) something I want to wipe off the bottom of my shoe.

I remember seeing a story recently about an Iraqi performance artist living in America who set up a website where users could trigger a paintball gun to fire at him. Maybe do something similar for Soloway.

My other suggestion involved a spam filter, a publicly posted e-mail address, and electric current. Every time the spam filter identified a piece of spam, he would get zapped.

A better idea would be a throwing a ball against a target and when you hit it dead on, it would send a five thousand volt electrical shock to Soloway nads.

Take down the owners of the products advertised.

I don't get spam for ma and pa bakery goods, or local retailers, I get spam for commercial pharmaceutical products, publicly traded stocks, and countless other high dollar products or services from legitimate companies.

It's not very hard to figure out the source of the problem here unless you blindly choose not to look at the source.

hmmm....

I know I might sound naive but isn't there a way they can back track on servers etc that he uses? I know they are probably in another country but it's worth a try. And as far as the bots are concerned, why not use them to download and install antivirus/antitrojan, or a message telling the computers they are compromised, or even something to kill their connection as a last resort? that will get someones attention....JMT

I think the other spamgangs are also knowing this infomation too, I mean it is all part of the game, and so far I just got hit with 3 of BadCow's spam just now,

I am beggening to think that with them knowing of Soloway's arrest, looks like Badcow and Yambo's group might be making more hard to get rid of viruses as well as tougher tracking to find the spam gangs, apparently that is where are going to land at once Summer begins.

Very funny that I noticed the spam in one of my accounts down about %80 in the last few days. It was just one forwarded email that always gave me a crapload of spam. I delete it everyday (usually about 25 are caught with my local spam settings, and 3 or 4 a week I have to manually delete)

The last 5 days or so I have way less than ten (today 5)

I guess those few emails were on his list.

Ban by IP address?????

I think what would help is the ability for services like
Yahoo to filter by IP address.
If you have spam coming from 29.34.247.21 and 29.34.247.50
and you don't know anyone in argentina or wherever the ip
address country resolves to, filter 29.*.*.* and it's done.
banning by subject line or domain name doesn't seem to
work, but every computer has to have an IP address.
Start with the last digit series, if it continues to be
a nuisance, set the filter up to ban the whole damned
country.

I agree, all ISP should block all non USA ip addresses for email. They should do this by default and provide a checklist of countries you would like to recieve mail from. This way if you have a legit reason to recieve mail from outside the USA then you just have to uncheck that countries box.

Ban!

Guys, you are all wrong.

The best thing to do is just ban spam for everyone but the police. Spam can be dangerous, and is very annoying. Banning it will mean that spammers will not be able to get their hands on spam. Also arrest people are found in possession of spam.

Banning things that I don't like is a good idea. Yeah.

I don't think you will see a decrease in spam overnight.

His network of spam bots (zombie computers) is probably still alive and active and will take a good while to "play" themselves out.

Even though he was in the top 10 of all spammers, I dont think we would see a significant decrease in spam.
