Don’t wait for Black Friday or Cyber Monday
(old news - 05:39PM Thursday Nov 22 2007)
tags: business · Oddities · consumers
Black Friday has long been the traditional day of year to go out and snag all of the holiday shopping deals you can get your hands on. More recently, Cyber Monday has been added to the list of important holiday shopping days as people would return to work after the holiday weekend and get online to finish getting deals they didn’t get over the weekend. But if you’re waiting until tomorrow or Monday to do your holiday shopping, it might be too late. Numerous websites have already posted significant price cuts on their online stores.

This is due in part to the fact that Cyber Monday is no longer necessary. Now that broadband has moved into the average home and people can connect to online stores without leaving their spot at the Thanksgiving table, online shopping doesn’t have to wait until the weekend is over. Combined with the fact that general sales predicted this year were low, businesses have decided to launch their online deals today to get a jump start on the season. You can still expect to see an influx of e-mail marketing for online deals throughout the weekend.

Got me a TomTom One 3rd Edition GPS for $129.99 at Circuit City, I'll go pick it up tomorrow afternoon.

Re: Already In

I have my eyes set on that as well. Best buy is selling it for $119 no rebates. What verison of maps does it come loaded with? how's your experience with it so far?

Haven't got it yet, reviews seem pretty good. It has the ability to update maps and POI information so if there is anything wrong you can get it fixed. From what I understand the Best Buy version is different than the Circuit City version, but I'm not sure what the differences are.

Re: Already In

Actually the one selling at best buy has bluetooth and SD card slot where as the one sold by circuit city lacks both and it claims to have speech to text feature, which is not true either.

Cyber Monday

Never existed. Is an non-event, an invention of marketeers with nothing better to do.

I use Telenav on my Sprint phone. Like it since I can go online and "pre-add" locations and just sync to the site when I connect with the phone. Nice thing about it is that it also doubles as a free 411 service. Since it's a company phone, it's free and it's one less gadget I have to carry with me. No "map updates" needed either. Hey, it works and it gets me there..

Bah Humshit

Cyber Monday? Never even heard of it. As if this country needs yet another excuse to gorge, overconsume and accumulate even more consumer debt. I don't celebrate Xmas so these alleged "deals," are irrelevant to me. Six months after December, you'll be able to find the latest & greatest selling for top dollar now in the discount bin.

Yes, how dare he take time out from the regularly scheduled program of non-stop gorging?

Silly argument really. At that point they wouldn't be the latest and greatest would they?

Happy Thanksgiving anyway.

Hmmm

People are caught in a hypnotizing corrupted commercialized holiday of the year. I am surprised no one sees this. Why can't people give gifts on the rest of the year?

Because it's the birthday of our lord and savior. We must express our joy and happiness and share it with others by buying cheap shit made by Chinese kids - on credit so that we can extend the merriment into January and beyond.

What CylonRed See Profile said.

Used to be, back in the before times, we could contain our excitement and enjoy one holiday at a time. So, Christmas, and the related consumption orgy, wouldn't begin until after Thanksgiving was over....but now since we're encouraged to buy ourselves to death all year long, Black Friday has kinda' lost it's magic.

I don't read outlet malls opening at midnight or miles of miles of minivan driving idiots waiting in giant lines to get in to save $5 on a barbie doll.

It still has an effect; for me amusement.

30 ? Haven't been following that american dollar slide to much have ya ? Or your just trying to make us feel better about it and give us some sort of hope.

The american economy will be coming to a crashing halt soon. And I myself am not spending much money this year except on the people I love mainly my immediate family. We have over commercialized this and every other holiday in the sake of turning a profit.

No thanks I will save my time and money and put it into the bank for a new home.

More likely research the origin of Christmas - Christ was probably born in summer, his birthday was moved to Christmas to coincide with pagan festivals to ease the transition.

Re: Hmmm

Hey hey...what's with the non-ethnocentrism?

edit: Actually, technically speaking, much less than half of the world has Christmas in summer, as the tropical regions don't have summer/winter seasons.

Yawn

I was watching the evening news briefly about some guy who, in total, will have camped outside Best Buy for 31 hours to get in the door when the store opens on Friday.

I've seen a preview Best Buy's "Black Friday" advertisement on the unofficial "Black Friday" website; quite frankly it wouldn't exactly make me want to camp outside their door.

At 5:00am when most stores will be opening up on Friday for sales; I'll be at home in bed asleep! Now that's something good.

Midnight run sounds fun....

I'd like to do a midnight run for Black Friday, it would be fun once for the experience.

However:

1.) There's nothing I want to buy
2.) I'm too lazy (and now on dialup @ my mom's) to try and figure out good Ebay sales opportunities.

I already bought a laptop which I think was a *heck* of a deal last month, and haven't seen any Black Friday deals that are as good @ that performance level (T7500, 8600M GT, 2GB RAM - $850)

Have to agree. This year the BF sales were mostly not that good. Saying that though I did go to Kmart Thursday Morning at 3:30 AM. They actually had a great deal on a 32" HDTV. My TV here in my bedroom went last month. So been waiting for a great deal. I have a connection with a CE wholesaler. Found out that their cost for this unit was $580.00. Kmart sold for $420.00. So was kinda happy bout that. Have to say this unit rocks, have it with the HD STB and I couldn't be happier.

Now just waiting for better deals after Xmas.

If only I were a rich European

so I could shop here with my Euros trading at roughly 1.5 to 1. Another couple of years at this rate and you'll buy rolls of 1$ bills to wipe your arse.

Sorry for two posts

but I found the following in my internut travels and thought I'd share the cheer!

--pasted text--

Where is that American spirit? Got to get out
there at the mall, dodge the drunk drivers, the kids on their cell phones, the police trying to issue a few tickets to justify a break at the local do nut shop, total road rage over the second parking spot you got gypped out of only to get a ding in your car by the big ass truck full of kids parked too close to your side. Then there is the joy of getting into the mall through the stinking sea of humanity, with babies crying and old men farting and belching and whole families walking along with food falling from their mouths. Dragging enormous bags of plastic and sometimes toxic crap made abroad in China and other sweat shops around the world by kids working is the most inhumane conditions. Being almost knocked down and having to take a piss and the line just never seems to end. Oh they joy of shopping. Then there come those bills and they arrive before you even know the warrantees is crap just like the stuff you bought for 5 times what it was worth. This year I will sacrifice and miss this magic day. I will not shop for anything. I may just stay home and relax for a while. Clean out the garage and closets and get drunk in the yard with a yard sale. I don't want to miss all the fun.

To answer the question - According to a friend in Philly, everyone was at the Rockville Square Mall at midnight last night. It was a veritable road rage fest b/c people were parking on lawns and sidewalks and otherwise beating each other over the head for $9.99 piece of shit, generic mp3 players and $500.00 laptops at an off brand retailer selling off off off off brand computers. Glad I missed it.

If I shop at all, then it's online for a gift card and then the recipient can just go spend the money on whatever s/he wants. No muss no fuss no shipping/handling/taxes.
