(old news - 01:58PM Monday Oct 15 2007)
tags: legal · business · wireless · privacy · Verizon Wireless Broadband
A startup named SkyDeck notes that Verizon Wireless customers need to opt out of a new plan to share customer CPNI (Customer Proprietary Network Information) data to third parties. That data includes all numbers called or called from, the length of each call and additional information on services purchased. Verizon is sending this letter to customers, alerting them that they have thirty days to call a 1-800 number or they agree to the sharing. Verizon tells RCR Wireless News "we’re doing the right thing here."

I got that letter last week...

and glad I read it too. 2 minutes later, I called the robot and "supposedly" I am out.

But how many folks will even notice this, let alone toss it and its "6pt type" letter to the trash?

I never got it, or if I did, I don't remember seeing it and just tossed it. My fault.

Thanks to dslreports.com, I have a second chance.

Re: I got that letter last week...

I never got the letter or maybe I tossed it because I pay on-line. But this is simply amazing to me that they can sell "proprietary" information. Doesn't that contradict the term proprietary ?? The term CUSTOMER proprietary information....it belongs to the customer..you talk about an invasion of privacy. I'm just thankful for the post and immediately opted out of such BS.

I find it amazing that the law requires customers to take an action if they don't want the info sold. It should be the other way around, in a perfect world. But selling this info to third parties would be too annoying for Verizon if they had to get permission from every customer to do so. So, why not just make it so the customer has to take action to protect their privacy and the problem is solved.

Scary, isn't it?

Your're lucky....i wish the death star did this. You may want to find out just how long your "opt out" function runs for though, Some companies are using a sunset provision allowing them to sell info after a designated amount of time. Anything for a buck!

Sounds like a good time for Verizon Wireless to ABSOLVE any current customers of any Contractual obligations you might supposedly have to them.

I PORT MY NUMBER, I CANCEL MY SERVICE, F-U VERIZON WIRELESS.

IF you Sell MY Private Information to make YOURSELF MONEY, never expect an Early Termination Fee!!!

AT&T has been vacated of contractual obligations with it's customers over simple price increases, or 'required technology upgrades', i.e...ANALOG/TDMA/GSM.....

Nuff Said, You Lousy Sons of Bitches!!

OOOH, an OPT OUT call is REQUIRED, if you do nothing, bend over and live with it.

How much time does the OPT OUT call buy us, 30 days, 60 days, certainly not more than 90 days???

This amounts to F'ing Treason Against Your Own Customers, You F'ing Bastards.

@sbcglobal.net

Note though that Verizon doesn't give out your name or phone number, and without the ability to identify you, it's only statistics. Further, for most people, lion's share of their calls are to other people rather than to businesses, so I'm wondering, who might be even interested to purchase this data, and for what use... I'm sure Verizon will get much more negative publicity from this initiative than it will earn by selling this data.

What the hell are these people thinking

I work for sprint and we just went through this huge training on keeping customer CPNI safe and not use it incorrectly. Now Verizon is selling peoples CPNI if they don't opt out. WOW that's all i can say.

Opt Out Number

For those of us that either mis-read or tossed the letter as it was in small print and since that scan of the letter is low quality (at least on this e-term at work) can someone provide the optout insturctions for those of us who want to optout.

Thanks

Verizon web site info

I always think twice before reacting to something like this. When I called the number it asked me for my PIN and not sure how well verified this article and doc is. That said, in the following FAQ there is an email address as well:

We need Opt In laws

Rather than make customers jump through hoops to not have Verizon whores selling their info, we need laws forcing these companies like Verizon and banks to obtain specific permission to whore out the info.

Number given in Verizon's "opt out" instructions was 1-800-333-9956. When reached "follow the recorded directions".

Thanks I called and it took all of 2 minutes. Interesting article available on this at:

Verizon of course says that sharing this will allow them to offer new services and stuff but gives no examples of how this information will benefit. Personally, the feeling of Big Brother watching, witch of course they are doing is scary.

Total BS. All that Verizon wants to do is make more money. They sell this information because raising rates will drive customers away.

Opt Out

Why don't they let the default be automatic "opt out" and then you can call to "opt in" if you want to. They are defaulting to something that most everyone would not want to be defaulted to and they know it. Trying to cover their asses for the future.

Re: Opt Out

I'm surprised Verizon didn't tell people that they would need to pay an extra monthly fee to opt out of this "service." Just look at the arcane non-published number fee and the way they extort money out of individuals who do not want their name and landline number listed in the phone book.

I'm just glad that our banks don't operate in the same way.

There is at least some plausible justification for charging these fees. That is the extra support/effort from the phone company to supply (or not supply) the number via 411/xxx-555-1212 when the caller is unable to find the number/information in the Printed Phone Book (or now the Internet Phone Number look-up sites).

The idea is that if it is there, the Information Operator will be used less since the number will/can, at least in theory, be looked up in the Printed Phone Book or Online in lieu of using Information (or the online equivalent). The fee is supposed to pay for the extra use of Information for those numbers that can NOT be located via the Printed Phone Book or Online. I can see this view although I am not saying that the fees charged is justified (as opposed to be excessive in relationship to the extra usage that is triggered) since ANY call to Information is charged for (and that charge SHOULD be set to recover the cost of the staffing needed to supply the service).

Isn't the user paying for 411 service?

At $50+/year for a non-published number, that's a lot of time for some Indian to be fielding calls about my phone number.

If you don't opt-out they can share your info among their affiliates. I get privacy opt-out reminders in my bank and CC statements every year.

u can beat them by putting in a "recognizable nick name or alias" if u like - i did so - but it took months of legal wrangling - i am "in the book" under a "recognized family nick name"

Very Simple

Verizon wants to make more money. They can earn money by selling your information. So they want to sell your information. Very simple. However, this is not consumer friendly. What if you don't want new services? What if you just want the existing services to work?

I would pass the info along, nothing to lose. This is legitimate unluck the claim of a cell phone directory. I have already called and opted out and I'd amke sure anyone you know who might want to optout is aware of the option to do so.

@myvzw.com
You're all confused... Its a LONG letter, but read if very careful. This info contains NOTHING personal, and it can ONLY be shared with the companies that own VZW ie, vz com, vodafone and vz biz.

READ THIS

@myvzw.com

Take it like this hrmm k -- Sales Guy works for VZBusiness, one of his customers is Company A. Company A wants the Sales Guy from VZBusiness to get a quote for new landline and cell RFP. Sales Guy from VZBiz would like to sell them a package deal, landline and wireless all in one. Since VZWireless is it's own company Sales Guy can't just call VZWireless to get their usage, cuz the FCC deems this illegal. Sales Guy would then need to call VZWireless, get the proper forms filled out, have Company A complete the forms, sign them and send back....Now do this with Company B, C, D, E, F G... and so on. This would turn into being a process just to get cell usage.

Once again ONLY VZ companies will have access to this very limited information. I've read the letter thru and thru and there really is nothing to worry about.

No; but look at the bright side: if you ever want the info about someone's calls, all you need to do is call Verizon and tell them that you are police officer. By the way, the same applies to Paypal.

for the almighty dollar

I wont be doing business with verizon and now I know what to ask when I sign up for new service, ill be damned if I pay for a service that has no regard for my privacy! If people stopped or changed their service verizon would seriously rethink the selling of our personal information, who I call, how long I am on the call and what service I purchase is my business alone. They start losing money i am sure they will change their position.
