Cable ISPs still offering paltry storage
(old news - 10:50AM Friday Aug 25 2006)
tags: business · cable · mail
Tipped by Karl Bode See Profile
While on-line webmail services offer gigs of storage data, our users have consistently complained that their providers are still leaving them with just a handful of megabytes for mail storage. For instance, users complain that Time Warner Cable & Roadrunner is still only offering 10Megs of storage. That leads many to pay extra for outside hosts. Couldn't mail storage be an ISP differentiator?

Optimum On-line apparently thinks so. Wilt Hildenbrand Sr., VP of Technology for the cable company, has confirmed to a user in our forums that all OOL subscribers now have 500 MB of webmail space.

500MB is sufficient...

500MB is sufficient, but 10MB definitely is not... 10MB can be filled very quickly with pictures.

I would go with something like Gmail or a host instead of a providers email anyway, not for the extra space, but to ensure you will be able to keep that email address for a very long time.. Down the road when other providers and fiber optic hits your block, you are not going to want to stay on your cable or DSL... you will ultimately lose your email address. It's highly doubtful anything will happen to Gmail in the next 2-3 years, but it is very likely you won't still be on Cable/DSL, or that your cable provider will be bought out/change it's name.

Re: 500MB is sufficient...

Comcast gives 250 per account which is also quite generous. For me its moot since I always download my e-mail and use Gmail as one of my mail accounts anyway, but its nice to see OOL do something like this (good PR anyway).

Agree, I used to use my ISP's email but after having been with about a dozen different providers it is way easier to just use a gmail/hotmail/yahoo addy.

What's funny is I still have my SBC DSL email address, months after cancelling service. Probably has to do with it being hosted by yahoo. It's probably too integrated into their system to just remove the address, since it's tied in with fantasy football and other features, and if you removed it, it would cause problems with stuff like that.

Whoop-de-do

My Verizon DSL has 2 GB with the main account, plus 256 MB for each sub-account, all for $165/year LESS than OOL.

Re: Whoop-de-do

Of course OOL accepts mail from foreign countries while Verizon blocked it in the past.

More importantly, regardless of the reported news and that OOL seemed to be doing the right thing, you were able to still take a shot at them.

Re: Whoop-de-do

Since you're going off-topic, do you want to discuss OOL's 'bulk mail' processing? It's been 4 years since they implemented it. Did they ever get it to work properly? What a joke.

Re: Whoop-de-do

I have no idea - I don't use it. When I have used OOL mail, it's always worked. I wasn't on the original problem mail store that most folks that had issues were on. As for space, even with 10MB I never had an issue.

What UL/DL Speeds is that DSL account delivering? Your claim that you are paying $165 less per year must be viewed in the light of if while you are getting more Email Storage you also get less speed on your connection.

OOL gives 500Meg in each of the 7 available Accounts with 15/2 speeds. Thus while the main account only gets 25% of your max space, each of the sub-accounts gets twice the space. They also offer 30/2 speeds for an extra $15/month which comes with 1Gig Email per account and 14 instead of 6 sub-accounts.

Re: Whoop-de-do

I don't care. I don't want more speed, I want to spend less money.

Hell, I'd probably still be an OOL customer if they offered 2M/384k for $30/mo. But they jacked-up their price from $30 to $45, so I switched to DSL, which was the best broadband decision I've ever made.

I can understand that and can agree that for your needs it was the right decision. My comments were directed more at your "Its Cheaper" statement when you were not comparing equivelent product and thus your claim was a non sequitur.

Re: Whoop-de-do

I mentioned the difference in price to point out that OOL is getting more revenue per customer, 38% more than what I pay, but they don't provide as much email storage.

And OOL has only one-third the number of customers as Verizon DSL, so it's not like it would require an unheard of amount of storage.

Email... or storage?

10MB of storage? Most small ISPs operate on smaller servers, hence the 10MB limit for them. More space = more overhead = more cost to customers. I for one don't WANT more than 10MB at one time to download.... that's a LOT of data. If you want STORAGE, a place to keep pictures, etc. then your ISP mailbox isn't it, nor was it intended for that purpose. Go with a Gmail account, or pay a company to keep it for you.

Just something else

for people to bitch about. Get a Gmail account which presentiy has just short of 3 gigs of storage. There are plenty of other things to complain about this isn't really one of them

Re: Email... or storage?

I agree with you, but very frequently I get more than 10mb of mail a day (forwarded videos, pic and whatnot) and I only check it once a day. So anything that would put it over 10mb would not get recieved.

Re: Email... or storage?

I'm sure there are a lot of people who get more than 10MB a day, but when you think about it, email wasn't intended for what most of us use it for today - that being sending lots of pictures, movies, etc. I just know I don't want that much.

It just goes back to using a Gmail account, or someone else like that.

Yup, thats the main reason I first got my gmail account, so when my dad sends me 5 funny videos at a time, I can still get the email that tells me my cellphone bill needs to be paid.

WHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

This story is much ado about nothing. What a bunch of crybabies. I have my own web hosting accounts were I configure my e-mail accounts to have only 10Megs each. I never have problem of running out. I use Outlook and configure the program to delete mail of the server after downloading. If I need to save the e-mail, I archive it on my computer or external hard drive. I have a Yahoo account I rarely use.

I have to admit my own bias on the issue: I do not care for so web applications and web storage. I would never store any personal information on the net. It only belongs on my computer.

Plenty of others

There are plenty of free web mail sites that offer allot more storage. I have Earthlink and they only offers 100mb email accounts but I also use Gmail as a backup. Just create a couple of Gmail accounts and you will have more than enough.

MSN Web Mail Live - 2gig
Gmail - 2.7 gig
Yahoo - 1 gig
Lycos - 3 gig

That's incorrect. Everyone has 500Mb, don't worry about what the webmail says. You haven't been upgraded to the new webmail yet.. the old one just can't display the higher amount.

As Wilt said in the post that the story refers to, its a coding issue. What it says on the webmail and what is reality are two different things. It should be fixed soon.

I have had 2 gig with my MSN dailup account for a couple of years now. I do agree 10 mb is way too small. I have had problems with small storage in the past. What is nice is you can go away for a week or two and not fill up your box.

Re: mail storage

With 384k upload on TWC, who has time to send 10MB worth of pictures? Honestly, who actually uses their ISP's e-mail account, anyway? 3/4 of the people I know use either Yahoo, Gmail, or Hotmail.
