Optimum Online comes out as a big winner...
10:17AM Tuesday Jul 29 2008 by Karl Bode
tags: business · consumers · Verizon FIOS · Embarq · Optimum Online
PC Magazine is offering up their annual survey of the best and worst tech support across industries. In addition to computer and media hardware support, they also key in on the best tech support among both ISPs and VoIP providers. Among ISPs, Cablevision's Optimum Online and Verizon FiOS get top honors, though while FiOS scores high in general tech support, customers show discouragement with billing (which mirrors our users complaints). Apparently, Embarq is also doing something right according to the telco's customers:
The biggest change, however, goes to Embarq, a Sprint spin-off that last year had only a 6.5; the newish service shot up to 7.4 overall for 2008. No one else had anywhere near that kind of change in the DSL world, the closest being EarthLink, which went in the other direction, dropping from 7.2 last year to 6.9.
Not too surprisingly, HughesNet satellite broadband comes in at the bottom of the pack. In VoIP, Cablevision's Optimum Voice and Vonage take the top spots. Oddly, PC Mag offers direct links to all survey results except for ISPs, something they'll hopefully fix shortly.

Embarq Support

While I've had several issues recently with my connection stability that have yet to be resolved, the support I've received with Embarq has been pretty much top notch.

Very nice, I didn't realize it had been around that long.

Early Adoptors do not predict the future

I thought these comments were very interesting:
quote:
"Still, the numbers are slipping as FiOS reaches more than just early adopters who were initially ecstatic with the speed"

"[Re VoIP]...and Vonage take the top spots"

One company that is very early in their product line, but investing billions over billions around infrastructure (and the marketing of that infrastructure). The general belief (mostly from early adoptors) that FTTH is the ONLY viable solution (similar to "twisted pair once was believed to have a maximum speed of 10Mbps")

....And the "best VoIP provider" is the same provider that will probably be out of business in a year. They could not figure out a way to get beyond early adoptors.

The future of technology also requires business intelligence of which early adopters typically have very little.

Optimum business support is great

My wife has optimum for both an ISP and VOIP in both her offices and they have been great. I have never had to wait when I called customer support for an issue. When they had to send someone out they said they would be there in less than 2 hours and they showed up in 40 minutes and fixed the issue. Try that with ATT.

Oh did I mention they are a lot less expensive!

Their customer service on the business side is great.

Right, that would be Lightpath, which in my experience they were great.

IIRC Lightpath is OOL's fiber, high-end business option. Business cable still goes on the OOL brand, and is still run over coax. I might be wrong though...

Lightpath offers Metro Ethernet, or fiber to premises, and regular OOL rebadged cable.

Last I had BOOL it used different routing than the residential offering, but this was often worth shit when the UBR at the headend was congested to begin with.

Correct!
My brother was advised to swap out his voice modem by CV support at the local walk-in center due to problems with their connection dieing.

Problem was that they NEVER ported over the home number to the new modem. After several calls to support got him no where, he called me, I got the right people on the phone, and after SEVERAL hours without service, it was restored.

Re: Optimum business support is great

When we used ATT in our office I called them to fix a problem with line noise. In three visits to the office they did not fix it. Finally I opened the main telephone box on our building (it was not locked) and found the problem. Our phone line had a loose connection. I fixed it and it was fine. The technician was useless.

Re: Optimum business support is great

I've had 4 AT&T techs and 2 contract techs. Both contract techs say the line between the main and the NID needs to be replaced. The AT&T techs don't agree. Probably because it's under ground and they don't want to dig it up to fix it. Time will tell. It's working ok for now. We'll see what happens after the next big storm.

Go magicJack!

It is quite exciting that magicJack ranked so highly in this respected scientific evaluation of VoIP service.

I have often opined that magicJack is the most superior VoIP service extant. I am gratified to be proven right, once again.

I don't think I'd go that far as it's stretching it. Sounds more like you see someone agreeing with you and you're happy. I have used MJ before and don't think it's anything "superior" for various reasons. And, most disturbing about this "survey" is how small of a sample they used and how disproportionate it is. PC Mag should know better. Further, just as surveys use samples, you pretty much need to sample the surveys and get a final.

For me, I'd rather see PC Mag test and rate the service themselves instead of asking emotional people their opinions.

Respected scientific evaluation ? From PC Mag ?!?!?? Please.

Blue, even with you being DLSR's #1 Magicjack hype-ster, that's a pretty big stretch...

Ease of Set Up?

Weird. I always thought that Time Warner Cable installs VOIP for you, hence your set up is either "plug a new phone into an outlet" or just let the technician in.

I thought that question was silly, actually, since you can't compare a managed VoIP and a Self-Serve VoIP the same. I don't see the likes of Fios, Comcast, Cox and TWC being "VoIP" as people here use the term (yes, they use VoIP) However, a self managed VoIP is not in the same class as managed.

The ease of setup could also be construed as what they went through to get the system installed from A to Z (calls, tech showing up, etc.) which then too skews that result. You can't compare calling a company, getting a tech dispatched and arriving on time to that of a sales call to someone that ships you a router in a box... two totally different mindsets from people..

Personally, I give PC Mag low ratings on this round of surveys.

No. It's a common misconception. FiOS doesn't use VoIP.

Ugh - PC mag....

What ? PCMag is still around ??

I re-subscribed about 2 years ago because I got some free-for-a-year deal. Let me tell you - it wasn't worth the price.

I was a long time reader and subscriber through the late 80's until around 2001. What WAS a good mag is now so much worthless clap-trap. Any rankings or ratings of anything from them means less then -0- to me {sigh}
