PC World Tests Show Drastic AT&T 3G Improvement
And show that the Motorola Droid on Verizon has issues...
by Karl Bode Tuesday 23-Feb-2010 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth
AT&T's public relations team proudly Tweets the fact that a new PC World study of wireless carriers shows a marked improvement in AT&T network performance. According to PC World, their testing methodology (they got help from Novarum) involved 51,000 separate tests covering 850 square miles of wireless cell coverage in thirteen cities. Their conclusion? AT&T's network speeds have jumped 84% in eight months, with download speeds now 67% faster than AT&T's competitors. The study also found that AT&T reliability and performance in their trouble markets of New York and San Francisco has significantly improved:

Click for full size
AT&T's download speeds in New York City were three times faster in our latest tests than in our tests last spring; in San Francisco, the AT&T's download speeds were 40 percent faster. The AT&T network’s reliability improved dramatically, too: Last spring, PCWorld testers obtained a usable broadband connection with AT&T only 68 percent of the time. In our latest tests, testers connected to AT&T successfully in 94 percent of their attempts.

Guess what consumers? Loud complaining helps, regardless of what some will say. Other interesting tidbits from the study include the fact that Verizon Wireless' average download speeds have dropped 8% since PC World's last study. The report's numbers indicate that Verizon may be struggling to keep up with smartphone user bandwidth demand, while Sprint is not (though Sprint's nasty habit of continually losing customers may be helping there). The report appears to really hammer the Motorola Droid performance on Verizon's EVDO network in terms of both speed and reliability:

In our winter tests involving 280 testing locations in 13 cities, the Droid rarely approached Verizon's promised upload speed of 500 kbps. Overall, the Droid delivered an average upload speed of just 116 kbps, the lowest average of any carrier/phone combo in our smartphone tests. And in numerous tests using the Droid, we recorded upload speeds of less than 75 kbps--painfully slow if you’re trying to send data of any size up through the network.

We also had trouble establishing a reliable connection between the Verizon network and the Droid during our tests. Verizon delivered an uninterrupted signal at reasonable speed in only 76 percent of our tests--far below the success rates of the 90+ percent that the other three carriers achieved.

So is Verizon going to be 2010's wireless capacity whipping boy? Probably not. As we've noted, the carrier's planning to launch faster LTE service in 25 to 30 markets this year, and plans to have the entire network upgraded by the end of 2014. Like AT&T, Verizon has plenty of cash to keep ahead of demand when they actually set their mind to it; Verizon data service revenues grew from $12 billion in 2008 to $16 billion in 2009, and their new wireless data pricing certainly won't leave the company's upgrade budget standing in any soup lines in 2010.

For Better, For Worser

I've had AT&T, Verizon and Sprint (Data & Phone) in the last 3 years. Frankly, they've all been pretty good (in some places not-so-good); performance-wise.

Turns out that YMMV is the rule that decides what's best for the user. Sprint works out best for me.

Completely agree. I've used both AT&T and VZW with more success on AT&T's network. I only get around 600Kb down at my home (on a 3GS), but most other places it's over 1Mb.

Re: For Better, For Worser

It varies here, in SoCal.

Early morning (before 7:30 a.m.). 2-26Mbps is typical
During the day - 1.2-1.8Mbps, some areas will get more, some much less
Evening - 500kbps - 1.2Mbps.

On a few occasions I've attempted to say some decent things about AT&T on some boards, and I've been thrown out of the building, then taken out back and shot. I give up. It's best to let the "big boys" take over in writing reviews.

Nice

I have also noticed during my daily commute that AT&T has been lighting up additional 3G service. Areas that were Egde only a month ago are now 3G.

Also - I noticed the coverage map in my area had been updated to show 3G where I live. I still get Edge only at home. I called Customer Serice and they verified with a different internal coverage map that I should be seeing 3G. They set up an appointment where a tech came to my house to measure signal. It seems they will be lighting up the 3G coverage in my home area within the next month and I should be reaping the rewards!!

Re: Nice

That's great news for you.

I have T-Mobile, and since I got a Blackberry in November, T-Mo has turned on 3g in all my daily routes. Before, the only 3g I could get was downtown and in one wealthy area.

i also have seen similar results.
i drive ~20 minutes to a commuter station for our light rail system, then ride the metro for ~20 mins each way. while listening to my music, i often surf facebook and dslreports while on the train. usually, once the train enters tempe, all bets are off about throughput. text messages usually go through, though my facebook app and safari both complain about not being able to reach the internet - even though i had four bars.
today, i instantly noticed that safari was snappy and never complained data throughput was pleasantly fast. overall, if this continues, i won't have any real major complaints about the a* coverage in tempe.

It kills me...

...to say something nice about AT&T. But in all fairness, the built in AT&T 3g modem in my laptop gets me over 2 Mbps consistently in my neck of the woods.

I was using a Sprint Overdrive before that and I was averaging 500-900 Kbps in the same area. Although that may just have been the Overdrive...I gather there has been a firmware update to improve performance since then.

i'm still lost

i'm still lost at how they are making a big deal about these speeds. yes they are fast for 3g, but give me a break. when did 3g start rolling out? and its taken this long to get it moving. well if you can call this 'getting it moving'.

Better in New Orleans

3G coverage and speeds have certainly improved in New Orleans over the past few weeks. Some areas still have spotty coverage but for the most part I'm on 3G wherever I go in the city. A step in the right direction for AT&T.

Laptops vs Smartphones & 3G speeds

Laptops need the highest speeds they can get because of the more demanding uses that a laptop can be used for - especially large file transfers and large document processing for traveling business users. And the 3G speed improvements(and later 4G speeds) can be fully utilized.

Smartphones(let's ignore tethering in this discussion) can get by on current 3G speeds as most use is by apps(especially on iPhones) that are just moving small amounts of data. Browsing of full multimedia web pages is not as prevalent. As 4G smartphones(Sprint in a couple months) come online, then video watching and maybe video conferencing could make use of the higher 4G speeds.

Speed is not the issue, it's coverage

AT&T is the speed king (for now) but the issue is coverage. Even in some parts of NYC there isn't a reliable AT&T signal, while Verizon has four to five bars.

So yes, AT&T will be faster and in midtown manhattan even the provider with the worst coverage (T-MObile) will have coverage, but that's not the point.

agreed... i've never had problems with my at&t 3g ... when i am in the tiny little zone they actually offer 3g in...

yes their 2g (edge) is everywhere... but geeze... would it kill them to expand their 3g coverage ??

sprint has had evdo out in my area for over 3 years now... 3 years... my at&t is still poking along on edge ... *sigh*

i have seen improvement

i have seen improvement with att voice and 3g speeds in nj. in places where i would barely get a signal or get poor reception, it is now better. at least all of the screaming is working. until apple releases a brand new iphone and the upcoming ipad and more people come on the network. good to see that verizon is starting to have some growing pains of their own with the newer smartphones.

I agree

Speed for ATT is not the issue... as is coverage.

3G for ATT here is not even available. Where as verizon's 3G evdo network is.

Mark the Spot App

I wonder what role the "Mark the Spot" iPhone App played here! Any thoughts?

Re: Mark the Spot App

Honestly, I think it helped big time! I live in Lakewood and on my Iphone 3GS I was getting dropped calls maybe once a day in the area. After I downloaded the "Mark the spot App." and reported each dropped call for about a week. It was not long after that I have had none! That was about three months past now.

I bet that app has allot to do with some of the improvements I have been seeing too.

Months ago, AT&T was a joke but even I admit

that their service has been significantly better in the last 6 months.

It's still a mess in San Francisco

Still no or minimal service in many parts of San Francisco. AT&T doesn't work at my house in Noe Valley and you have to go about 4 blocks down the street just to pick up edge. Yeah, they might be fast if you can get connected, but good luck getting connected.

Re: It's still a mess in San Francisco

Want better coverage in San Francisco? Tell your neighbors to stop suing whenever a company tries to put up a new cell tower. Seriously, the NIMBY crowd is a loud one, and expanded coverage gets tied up with lengthy environmental reviews and lawsuits for years. The culture in San Francisco and New York has allowed this to happen for way too long. Just google for "cell tower lawsuit" if you don't believe me. It's ridiculous.

That may be true, but why not add to existing towers? T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon seem to have no problems covering the area.

Re: It's still a mess in San Francisco

Verizon has had a long legacy build out in CA, AFAIK.
T-Mobile has the old PacBell Wireless network (legacy/very well built out)
Sprint has it pretty much the best in urban CA, as they have added CDMA onto iDEN sites (purchase of Nextel)

AT&T (was Cingular) bought AT&T Wireless, which had a weak network, and their expansion came after NIMBYism.

Coverage

My coverage for AT&T is fine where I live, in the Baltimore/DC metro area. They have just about all of Maryland/Delaware/Northern Virginia covered with 3G, so I'm fine at home. The I-95 corridor in Florida is also blanketed, so I'm fine when I'm there.

If you live in a suburban area relative to a medium-sized city, you're usually fine with AT&T having 3G there.

Recent Speed Test Results from Work
Interesting, that PC World results look like my best results. I will say that some of these tests are from deep within my work place and some are at peak times. Best coverage in this part of Houston. I went with them after asking other people at work. At home I get very good speeds most of the time.

Too bad this app does not show my network connection type, most of these are 3G.

Switched to Verizon ...

to get a Droid pohone, and I find the service to be MUCH better than AT&T around here (north of Cincinnati). Areas that AT&T would hardly even have voice I get full signal with 3g coverage that ranges between 1-1.5 mbit.

AT&T can speed up things all they want, but it's useless if 1/2 to 3/4 of the coverage is EDGE. I was NEVER a fan of Verizon in the past, but I am growing to be more of a fan each time I need to use my phone.

3G data good, 3G voice bad

Download speeds are great if all you use your phone for is data.

I've found download speeds my iPhone to be generally good, but with an approximate 30% drop call rate using it to make calls is hit or miss.
