Pac Bell Distance to CO Rumor
(old news - 12:23PM Thursday Apr 12 2001)
From the Front Page News:

A reliable source reports that Pacbell/ASI plan, in May, to reduce the distance limit for ADSL from 17.5kft to 14kft. Those beyond 14kft will be told to wait for Project Pronto! 14kft would bring them slightly below the Covad distance of about 15kft, but with the demise of NorthPoint, there is now little competition beyond 15kft. Hope this is true.

I'm at 16,860 and would welcome the shorter distance, just so my "ready" light will stop blinking at me.

That's their story

Trying to get my speed cap lifted from 384/768, I told the tech I'm 16kft feet from the CO. She says that's too far, and I can't get uncapped. She says I never should have DSL in the first place because they only go to 14kft.

Sigh.

Signed up in April with SBC/PacHell, was told I was 17k feet at that time and that 384/128 was no problem. In 3 months, I never speed tested above 325/111. Now, after complaining enough to get a tech out to my house, who said they would put me on a different loop, I am being told that I am 19k feet away and that SBC just won't provide me service at all because of the distance. The Tech rep I talked to says I should try to get in on Project Pronto, but, from reading these discussions, I have a bad feeling it's gonna be a long while...
