I personally haven't seen one of these yet, but do find it intriguing. I don't know if I'd leave my iPhone behind for it yet, but the phone could show some promise. As much as I like my iPhone, I've been hoping that something else might come along to knock Apple and AT&T down a peg or two... especially since this Google Voice fiasco. (And there are other complaints too, particularly related to AT&T's draconian rules about streaming video and their sub-par network quality as compared with other carriers.)
I'd welcome a phone that has tight integration with Google apps in a sleek package with a good network provider. I might even consider an Android if T-Mobile's 3G network becomes as strong as Sprint's is touted to be. -- Trusting the Democrats to fix our economy and give us health care is like trusting the fox with keys to the henhouse, a brand new gas stove, and a pantry full of goodies for side dishes. All the network bashing is quite boring to me. I think if you put 45 million iPhones (how many are there anyway? just guessing) on any other network, the complaints would be the same.
I've yet to see a single Pre. I won't get one, I'll just wait for the next iPhone next summer... -- .:|:. Go Wheatley or Go Home!

For the record, I've been an AT&T customer for a number of years now (at least 5-6, probably more). I'm not necessarily a fan of bashing them, but believe that criticism is warranted when they don't measure up to their competitors and try to play the game of blaming their customers for their service's shortcomings. -- Trusting the Democrats to fix our economy and give us health care is like trusting the fox with keys to the henhouse, a brand new gas stove, and a pantry full of goodies for side dishes. I have one and like it. I've tried out iPhones from a couple of relatives and the Pre matches up very well. While the # of apps is only 41 independent apps(about 2 dozen built-in apps from Palm are included with the phone) at present, many more will be coming online very soon. And of those 41 independent apps I am using about 12.
The only weak app area is games, but then that doesn't interest me at all. There are several news and social networking apps and sports apps like NFL & Nascar. And the phone has all the usual Google apps - like search, maps, gmail, phone contacts, etc.

I think the point being made was that for most people there is no real value in a product having 5000 applications as opposed to one having only 50, as long as the 10 or so most desired are available on either device.

| | | | Yea, i've yet to see anyone with one, but i've seen thousands of iPhone 3G, and many iPhone. On a train carrying 700-900 people, i've seen about 15-20 iPhones per railcar, but i have not seen one pre EVER. I take the train a lot, so this to me is an indicator.

jhboricuaExMod 2000-01 join:2000-06-06 Minneapolis, MN 1 edit | There are a couple of 'unofficial' GV apps for the pre I have 2 of them running on mine. It would be nice to get an official one from Google that integrates tightly with the Pre. It already has some tight integration with gmail that I like a lot so it shouldn't be to hard to bring GV in the fold.

chlenEthically ChallengedPremium join:2001-01-16 Albany, NY | great device the Pre is a great device, the user interface, the interaction, the synchronization and integration are have no competition right now. The device itself could use a bit more, but it is sleek and functions incredibly well.
People forget this is a beta device for webOS, and that the app store is still in beta, although the apps on it like Pandora, Fandango, Citisearch and Where are really great and multitasking and wifi abilities make the iPhone seem obsolete.
Sure they have had their own problems but this is the cleanest release of a v.1 OS I have ever seen, and I am a software engineer. -- This is not the greatest post in the world, no, this is just a tribute!

Open up app catalog and you will see a giant BETA ribbon accross in the background. Pre's develoment environment (Mojo) has only recently been released to the public, and the 299 is for the device, the webOS is what the future of mobile platforms, and those apps will continue to grow as more devices run webOS.
I have one and I love it, but like anything else I understand that v 1.0 was not going to be with out faults, it would be naive to assume otherwise. I will say the Pre was an incredibly clean v 1.0 launch, Apple had not been as lucky and I think we all know what happened with the BB Storm and Windows Mobile 5. I am paid to study these things. -- This is not the greatest post in the world, no, this is just a tribute!

| Re: Beta? I agree with you. I had used iPhone 3G since it's release on July 11th. Stood in line for iPhone 3G for almost 8 hours. I LOVED iPhone. It's certainly a wonderful device. Unfortunately it broke. I won't go into the specifics as they're a bit off topic but it made more sense and was easier on the wallet in the long run to let go of iPhone after that and move to something else. My curiousity had gotten the best of me and Pre cought my attention. I've had for a few weeks now and I have to say, it's a fantastic device. I used to think "No phone will ever be as good as iPhone" and had said "I just can't see myself using and being satisfied with any other phone" but Pre has delivered and then some. I'm really looking forward to what's next in terms of webOS.
Also, I know most of the software is either 1.0 or BETA on Pre, but it still feels solid and I could easily compare it to iPhone 3.0. While it may fall short in some areas, I hope and trust Palm will fill the gaps soon. Sooner than Apple did with iPhone for that matter.
Off topic... I'm about to go to Best Buy and get Touchstone! I'm looking forward to it! Cheers -- Follow me on twitter!

| | | Re: Link to Pre Homebrew apps gallery Funny - I got two of my Pre's for $100 each and I wouldn't give them up for all the iPhones on the planet. I use it as a wireless accesspoint and router all the time with my notebook while on the road, and the operating system is so open and easy to develop on, it wont be long before we start seeing lots of great "solid" things available on it from 3rd party developers. I do love how some of you iPhone fanboys like to rip on a new device when your iphone toy has been out for a few years. I think the Pre's interface and navigation is better than anything else out there, and I laugh when using an Iphone i keep trying to swipe stuff closed or switch to one of my other open programs.. Sure apple innovated first, but then the guys went to Palm and innovated even more. Competition is KING - so I'm all for both devices trying to raise the bar.. Atleast we are all not stuck with a windows mobile phone... Ughhh what a nightmare.

-D2G You aren't a Pre fanboy? You know, it's pretty naive to call others fanyboys when you are exhibiting the exact same traits.
Before you call me a fanboy, I gave the Pre a shot and returned it in the 30 day period. It has potential, but not with that cheap ass sliding mechanism, small keyboard, and the various browser caching errors. Sprints network is lacking on the west coast, I travel to Cali quite often and it just barely hangs onto Sprint 1X instead of switching to Verizon. It's the same story for where I live, so I wasn't about to deal with that garbage for two years because Sprint disabled forced roaming. I still say the iPhone wins hands down, it will be difficult for any company to defeat Apple now that they have a stronghold on the market. The ability to flick between cards isn't worth it for me when you take into account how cheap the Pre feels.
I will say that I really did like the gestures. -- "If it can't be done with brains, it can't be done with hours" - Clarence "Kelly" Johnson

That's the other thing, the only people I know that have sprint are the nextel users. I don't anyone who uses sprint for regular service... Sprint is as good here in Ustate NY and New England as any other service, also without charge it roams both data and voice on Verizon. Where you have VZ you have Sprint. I understand Sprint is different on the west coast kind of how Tmobile has nothing here.
Sprint in their defense went from the worst customer service in India to the best by far, all in the US. My building is a dead spot for all cell service and Sprint sent me a free Airave FemtoCell with free service and called and checked to make sure it arrived, helped me set it up, made sure everything worked and called back by the same rep to ask how it was working out.
The pre is a bit cheaply made for the sliding mechanism, but I can type a book on the keyboard as opposed to typing like crap on an iPhone. I use it for business and type very long emails quickly and with out too much error. -- This is not the greatest post in the world, no, this is just a tribute!

I had the same experience with VZ and Nextel (before they were with Sprint).
VZ went as far as telling me my account could not be shut off and would have to be on till the end of the billing cycle until I was damn near yelling to speak with a manager, and then I just decided to go to a store and do it there.
I suspect retention departments are all like this.
Last year I bought a new car and it came with 3 free months of XM, I have not paid a penny but every three months they call me to set up an account I try to cancel they push it back three months. It has been over a year. -- This is not the greatest post in the world, no, this is just a tribute!
