Patent Pooling Could Reduce LTE Competition
If companies will all commit to sharing their secrets
by KathrynV Monday 14-Apr-2008 tags: business · wireless · hardware · alternatives · world
Throughout the years, we have seen a number of problems in the tech industry related to patents and infringement on them. Businesses have gone broke trying to recoup their losses after lengthy court battles over patent violations. Some major companies interested in developing LTE technology are hoping to prevent that problem by combining efforts to create a patent pool. Nokia, Ericcsson and NEC are among the parties that are willing to commit to sharing their patents.

""The adoption of this initiative will reassure operators of the early widespread adoption of LTE technology throughout the consumer electronics industry," Ericsson's Senior Vice President, General Manager and Chief Technology Officer Håkan Eriksson said in a statement accompanying the announcement."

Suspiciously absent from the pool is Qualcomm, a company that you would think would be highly interested in avoiding patent problems considering their recent losses in court resulting from infringements.

As long as its...

Good for the average consumer = a good thing.
Good for one specific individual patent squatting company = bad thing
While I do suspect the numbers are probably off a bit...

GSM/HSPA (which most will end up on some migration path to LTE) approaches 3 billion.

Well, that blows it as long as you toss Verizon in the pot. They guard their stuff like a junk yard dog over a new smashed up lexus.
