Rim JobsThis is a classic case of "founderitis". You can't have 2 people with the same title with the same level of power in any organization, there has to be a tie breaker when it comes to decisions. The guy with the hair refuses to admit that the iPhone was a threat 5 years ago..... The bald guy apears to pay more attention to his 2 failed attempts to create/buy a hockey team - so where is his focus? No matter who you are in that company, you are powerless to make a difference as long as those guys are in power. They are co-owners and have convinced the board to wait till next year (repeatedly). The board is not acting responsibly by letting these guys stay in power. I could rant on and on forever but this is going to be a case of their removal being one of those... "kicking and screaming" events as they are escorted out the door.

I don't understand why RIM investors and the board continue to support "co-CEOs". As you point out, you can't lead a company (or anything) with two heads. I regret not holding my RIMM short longer from this summer.

Wait, are we still talking about the company?!?!? Your post is more relevant to this thread than RIM is to the smartphone industry.

I haven't been talking about this company since I sold crackberry.com to the suckers who have it now.

I don't understand why RIM investors and the board continue to support "co-CEOs". As you point out, you can't lead a company (or anything) with two heads. I regret not holding my RIMM short longer from this summer. Because the 'big' investor (and others), Jaguar, wants to basically break the company up and sell the patents. This would be good money for the investors (actually, it would be worth billions) but RIM would be gone, along with thousands of employee's. RIM has several problems. 1. Perception. RIM is doing bad in the US, but not elsewhere..however, that doesn't matter. 2. Slow at delivering new products. 3. Slow at delivering new OS. (BB 10.0 (PB 2.0)) 4. Two CEO's who believe they are too smart. What RIM needs to do is find a new CEO, put Mike in charge of technology and development, and put Jim in charge of sales. They also need to find a marketeer. I do know of some products that are up and coming, and it's never too late to get back into the game, but obviously they can't wait forever. One of their new products will compete directly with Android/iPhone. What they will need to work on is making everything seamless like the iPhone but have pricing closer to Android and overall quality and security that is better than Android and more secure than both. (security is BB's strong suit). RIM also needs an attitude change with who they hire and how they hire. Going on education alone isn't cutting it, obviously, as you can see, with the two exec's that disrupted that flight. (was surprised to learn that they both were on work permits from Scotland, one living in this tiny village just north of here and the other from Kitchener) They spend billions on R&D but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon. As for Mike and Jim, I have no idea how they manage to co-manage. Someone needs to give them a wake-up call, and I have no idea how that is going to happen, especially when sales continues to climb outside USA.

I regret not holding my RIMM short longer from this summer. I'm sooooo mixed on this whole debacle. On one hand, RIM was never going to stay a leader in the smart phone market. They were the first, and as more and more manufactures got into the game, it was a natural assumption their market share would drop. But they did F up big time when they decided not to focus on their core customers, and try to compete with Apple and Android manufactures. Now their having an identity crisis, and facing huge product delays.... Now RIM should focus on their core product and service, and try to get some stability in their market share. Investors expect constant growth, and now those same investors need to face the fact that RIM is now a mature company. I hope Mr. Laz, and Balsillie fight for their company so that it's not broken up and sold off for its patents. They should try to keep the company in 1 piece for the sake of their employees and customers.

At this point, many investors might be happy simply to not lose any more value. You state that RIM is a mature company, but its actions suggest otherwise. said by Warez_Zealot:I hope Mr. Laz, and Balsillie fight for their company so that it's not broken up and sold off for its patents. Even though I'm not an investor, I would hope that the "co-CEOs" get the boot and the board looks seriously for someone (singular) to get the business on the right track.

RIM downhill after smartphone ascendencyRIM's downfall started with the rise of the smartphone. They missed that bus and have been doing a horrible job of playing catchup.

Re: RIM downhill after smartphone ascendencyBlackberries work well doing what they were originally intended to do however, they've mostly failed to move beyond that e-mail limitation (while iOS and Andoird get better at everything). Compound that with the total lack of a native e-mail capability with the Playbook and one really has to scratch their head trying to understanding exactly what the company's strategy really is.

Re: RIM downhill after smartphone ascendencyYep.
They ARE better than anything out there for email though. But their apps platform is epic fail.

The RIM CircusRIM needs start fresh but the clowns running circus it maybe amusing but nothing really gets done.
The need get rid of most current including to CEO's.
Blackberry products are nice smartphones but RIM cutting to many corners to make profit and they are skipping implenting new features to compete.
Blackberry redesign would be nice give it new updated look

cause/effect?If RIM executives are asking the same question as other people, maybe that accounts for the drinking....

Make It An AppPerhaps RIM should surrender and develop both an iOS and Android app that provides the Blackberry experience but runs on those platforms. It seems like they only have a small amount of time left before they are history.

Re: Make It An AppI have to believe there is a movement afoot to open up the BB back end to offer services to iOS and Android. RIM would be even more foolish than it already is if it's not considering such a move.

CapabilitiesPeople want phones that... do stuff. BB canno compete in this are against the iPhone and Android phones. Don't get me wrong, BB's do what the do very well. But more and more people are jumping on the smartphone bandwagon and only want one phone. I'm betting more and more IT depts are opening up to phones other then BB's.

Re: CapabilitiesAt my organization we recently (this past summer) got rid of our Blackberries and shut down our BES server. Since then, almost everyone who had a BB has since switched to either Android or iPhone.

Re: CapabilitiesI had to have a company phone and while they allow some people to have iPhones, they would not allow me to use my Android. So my company BB just sits (dead) on my car seat. I'm not about to carry keys, wallet, BB and Android phone. I'm not Batman. Our IT dept sent out an email asking people about their personal phones, etc. I think they might open up to the use of Android phones.
I can certainly see that many companies will hold out as Android phones (and even iPhones to a lesser degree) are not as secure as BB but I think more and more and sliding over.
If I was in IT I don't know that I'd allow it I'm thinking this is why BB sales are falling. Smartphones just have too much to offer.

who caresHonestly, who cares anymore about these guys. Let the whole org fall on its face over time and we won't have to hear about it anymore. The general public will decide this company's fate and I suspect we've all spoken.

the failboat has crashedOur BES is still chugging along, though with fewer and fewer users as contracts expire. More folks are going with an iPhone or Android.
Someday, I envision it having one lone user. Maybe it'll sail off into the sunset eventually.

Those Ceos certainly make a stinky mess of their RIM jobsWhat a load of crap! Those CEO's are certainly making an ASS out of themselves! They've stunk up the whole company! If I were a shareholder I'd demand to flush them out and get new candidates for Rim Jobs

RIM liquidation near?I've tried all 3 of the major smartphones (BlackBerry, iPhone, and Android) and my weapon of choice is the iPhone (which I currently have the iPhone 4 through Verizon). The BlackBerry is too limited and Android does not sync well with Mac computers (iCloud and iTunes). Plus, the iPhone doubles as an iPod so I can play my favorite music (that I've downloaded legally off of iTunes) in the car using a dock cable attached to an aftermarket stereo.
I would not be surprised if RIM goes out of business in the next year or two. When I go into a Verizon store or AT&T store, there are lots of Android phones as well as a dedicated display for the iPhone in their respective showrooms. They only have 1 or 2 different blackberries on the showroom floor at the same time.
