Philly Wi-Fi Expands
Full network completed by Q3
by Karl Bode Thursday 24-May-2007 tags: coverage · wireless · municipal
Earthlink says the 15-square-mile test network in Philadelphia has performed as planned, and the company will now continue building out the full 135-square-mile network. Earthlink says the network should be completed by the third quarter of this year. The company offers this map showing Philadelphia Wi-Fi coverage.

Where the Network Won't Be...

Good luck unwiring North and West Philly... those workers might want to don some full body armor to avoid getting shot to death.

Re: Where the Network Won't Be...

what does gangs have to do with being on the internet? Why does this board keep bringing this up? Last time I checked.....rolling around in tinted cars blasting undergound music (not in the form of mp3) was in style. .....

Wow, does anyone see a glaring omission on that map? Univerisity City is uncovered . . . one would think that students at Penn & Drexel would be the first enthusiastic users on such a system. Plus, the area isn't too violent compared to North Philly / Temple area. No body armor req'd in University City at least when I went to school there!

Re: Where the Network Won't Be...

If they attend Penn, they can certainly afford Wi-Fi.

Now, the people in North Philly, that is different matter... One has to wonder though, if one can't afford internet access, how can one afford a laptop? But I am sure the biz people at Earthlink thought that through.

The city will simply award an exclusive no-bid contract to Notlim Enterprises to hand out "free" laptops before John Street's tenure as mayor expires

myokitis, that map is just the pilot area. there is no omission. the Inky yesterday had an article that showed the eventual total network coverage. the online version of the article doesn't show the map but says "It will blanket all of Philadelphia's 135 square miles."

3 years behind schedule, and still nowhere near done!

YAWN, another "update" about this stupid project. Wake me up when it is actually fully completed; assuming that actually happens some day........

Please... Pat's and Geno's are OVERRATED beyond belief. Tony Luke's at Front and Oregon is the only good place to go for a cheesesteak.

Even if i I have to wait an hour driving through Delaware to get to South Philly when I go visit... I do it, and I am never disappointed.
