Or was he so stupid that he didn't think he could get caught. I guess people like him didn't worry about that "knock" at the door that would eventually come. Out of all the people that got this type of email from this guy and others that may be out there, a large majority did not fall for it. But some did. Call them ignorant or dumb, but there are people out there that will fall for it, esp the non computer savy type.

| | What happens when they get caught? What does someone like Zachary Hill get for doing something like this. I bet if it was life in prison and a 1 billion dollar fine, it would at least stop americans from doing it. How can anyone who blatantly sets up a crime get nothing less than life in prison? | |

Forget that, he should be castrated. That would be a perfect solution to all those that want to be stupid enough to try. Doing prison time is not justice enough. Taxpayers shouldn't foot the bill for free room and board.

| | Stop calling the users dumb. Some of these scamjs look just too real. Unless your a dslreports level user you can fall for it easy.
I am sick of getting paypal emails telling me my account has been comprimised and log in using .
It is so bad that I do not even trust my own dns too much, cause I am afraid that my machine has been hijacked by the latest ms flaw.
It is prob time for new e-mail standards all together. You can not expect end-users to have that much of a clue.

New laws don't mean crap because 99 percent of these scams are from overseas (or they get "bounced" from overseas to hide the real ip) and/or they use hacked accounts (IE earthlink and aol)

The scam is as old as time itself, email is just a new means of engaging it. Even if you were to somehow change email, scammers would still find another way of doing it. -- Keep America Strong! Bush/Cheney 2004

Doctor FourMy other vehicle is a TARDISPremium join:2000-09-05 Dallas, TX 1 edit | Yet another example found in this week's Langalist This phishing scam has been going around a while too. You get an email claiming your credit card has been charged for the purchase of a new PC (in this case a laptop), but that there's been a delay in the order processing. The natural reaction is to say "wait, I never ordered that," and rush online to cancel the order. That's when the phish occurs. The site that is linked to in the email is almost always a company you've never heard of, and they ask for personal information. The sole purpose of the scam is to get your credit card number.

| New scams As someone who works in the business, I can attest to the fact that most people don't want to learn anything about their computer or maintaining it. They get a computer with Norton anti-virus and never update it. Firewalls confuse them because they don't know whether to allow something or disallow it (somewhat understandable), so they turn it off or uninstall it. You would not believe how many people don't even know what a Microsoft update is, and not many of those ever take the time to install them. They buy the computer for their kids or their porn (or both). So in a sense, they do bear some of the responsibility for their own dilemma.
I still believe that, where possible, vigorous prosecution of phishers would help some, but I'm starting to give some serious consideration to the possibility that people should have to get a license to surf the internet. It'll never happen, but it should.

Anyone with that attitude shouldn't be surprised when their machine gets hacked and/or they fall for these scams. Its no different than buying a car and not bothering to maintain it and expecting it to continue running. -- Keep America Strong! Bush/Cheney 2004

I've been in the discussions before, and I honestly agree there should be some formal training for anybody who's wanting to get on the internet if they haven't been on it during the 5 years previous. For their own safety. -- Updated My Journal TP&C

MarkHreserved for later usePremium join:2002-12-19 | Dumb? Maybe; more likely wanting convinience I keep seeing all the comments slagging off the n00bs for not running updates etc, yeah it's pretty dumb, but lets face it, the avg Joe doesn't want to know about updates etc; he wants another piece of consumer electronics that works out of the box, and carries on working the same way for as long as he has it. He doesn't have to update the firmware on his vcr/dvd player to watch the latest blockbuster hit, and expects a PC to be the same. And to be fair, it's often the B/S of the guys who sell it to him that makes him think this is the case.
Maybe if the vendors turned on the update routines so they work automatically it would be easier for J Public, I know it's not going to educate him, but neither is any amount of calling him dumb. He doesn't want to learn about PC's, he wants a consumer electronics appliance. -- Things not what used to be. Missing one inside of me. Deathly lost, this can't be real.
