JestocostThe Poodle Bites. join:2000-10-19 Saint Louis, MO | Can Telocity Keep Up?
Telocity seems to be taking on a lot of the load from failing ISPs or those just getting out of the residential market. Since their current cash burn rate points to a judgment day in 1Q01 and there's no sign of new funding in sight, what will the eventual impact be? Is this a smart move for TLCT as they get a significant number of customers with lower acquisition and capital costs? Or will the additional revenues they can generate be too little too late, leading to them inevitably joining the list of failed ISPs and leaving their customers hanging? -- Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?

| Anon | Tech Support??????
I've been without service for 12 days now and am unable to reach tech support at Phoenix. I wonder how long it will take telocity to get it together and provide customer service.

While I don't necessarily agree that the Telocity press release actually indicates that Telocity will take over the Phoenix residential accounts, I did notice this statement: said by Telocity: Both companies have a reputation for top-rated customer service. In fact, DSLreports.com, the premier consumer broadband information Web site, includes both MegaPath and Telocity on its list of "recommended" DSL providers based upon feedback from its users.

| | | lml2000Whazzup join:2000-08-17 Los Angeles, CA | Granted the article is far from conclusive on the issue of an ultimate home for current residential customers of Phoenix Networks now operating as a separate sub of MegaPath. The FACT remains that when the merger was announced a 60-day timetable was set forth as the period in which "a home" for Phoenix's residential customers would be found. That 60-day period is just about up.
It would be misleading for the Telocity news release to indirectly imply, at least a possibility, if not a likelihood, that Telocity will be the operation to take over Phoenix's residential account. There is not enough evidence in the news release alone to conclude this, but given other factors surrounding this merger, odds favor that Telocity will be the ISP to assume responsibility of Phoenix residential accounts in the not so distant future.
Most likely at this juncture the deal has yet to be inked, so it is unlikely for one to see some more direct, though implicit, statements leading one to conclude that Telocity would assume the obligation. Why would Telocity admit to an obligation that have yet to contractually assent to. Give it time. Sure, there's a possibility the deal could fall through leading to a "no harm, no foul" kinda scenario. Notwithstanding, my chips are on Telocity at this point in time, and its not an unreasonable assumption. -- Regards,

Quote: Residential DSL Provider Telocity and Business DSL Provider MegaPath Networks to Identify and Swap New Customer Leads
that just says new customer leads... as in people sniffing for DSL
nowhere in there does it even imply that existing customers will be transferred..
I fully expect megapath to dump us into Telocity's lap... but I would like to see an article proving it before i get worked up over it. -- Mylar the Incomprehensible My Diary: »/dsl_diary/other/178981

I scanned the release quickly and upon further consideration agree that it doesn't address a shift of existing residential customers to Telocity. Still, it's the only 'official' word I've seen that describes the relationship between the two. Given that relationship and Telocity's hunger to acquire customers from failing ISPs, the Phoenix switch does make sense. -- "Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?" -- FZ

| | Im a phoenix residential customer and i just got home from school and for some reason IE wont load pages... AIM & AOL work, and i can see the web through AOL's explorer, but IE wont work... Thinking it might be IE I installed netscape 6, and that doesnt work...
Is anyone else having this problem?
|
| | | Re: Messed up connection Weirdly enough, yes, I am having exactly the same problem. lynx, telnet, ssh, aim and other services work. But nothing works right from my windows/ie environment. I was going nuts thinking something had gotten hosed in my nat/firewall configuration. I still don't understand what the problem is. The symptoms don't make sense. I wouldn't believe someone who told me they'd seen what I'm seeing. | |
|
| | | | Re: Messed up connection I had a similar problem soon after getting DSL. I have 4 machines on a home network (WINme) and the clients would only get AIM or MS Mess but no browser. I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling all the network drivers on all the machines and suddenly everthing worked. I think the network cards in my host got crossed up. Who knows? | |
|
| | | And I thought I was just crazy!!! Glad to see others were also experiencing the same problem. Everything seems to be A-OK today thankfully. | |

| | gy @192.200.x.x | I just received my letter from Phoenix and they said I will have to pay the $50 to Telocity and if I cancel my service I will still be hit with the early cancellation fee......hmm, I don't remember them saying that they reserve the right to switch me to a different company. | |

I was told by a Phoenixdsl representive that I wouldn't have to pay more for my service with telcocity.. I signed a contract.. I called them today and they told me I would have to take it up with phoenix networks which they are now pushing the buck.. But, when I told them they could get suid for what they are doing to the residents who signed the contracts for 39.99 and telocity wants to charge 49.95.. They did want to talk to me anymore.. I am going to get my attorney to check into the breaching the contratc is against the law and they know that..

Is anybody wondering why some many companies are failing? DSL is expensive to run and in the current market, providers are having to take a huge hit by charging less and reducing staff that supports the customers. All of y'all who want to go sue and have another company go down, go for it. I on the other hand would appriciate some customer service that will talk to me and some REAL tech support now and then and if they want to charge a little more for that, fine. | Anon | hey Skoonen, i found the same thing happeend to me. Except netscape didnt work, and all I could access were small >5 kbs files. Whats the deal? AIM worked.
|
| | | Re: Skoonen SAME DEAL
Hey, I tried loading a small page, and it that works, so we must both have the same damn problem. Are you running win2k too?
|
| | | FIXED IT! Hey, I have 2 nics in my pc, i tried it on that nic, and it works fine... Heres what most likely happened, the dhcp server that assigns IPs to Nics has our Nic stuck on their server, you could try doing a ipconfig /release_all then ipconfig /renew_all If that doesnt work, then try another network card and it will work again

| | | | Re: FIXED IT!
I have static IPs on my subnet and i have exact same problem as you guys do - everythign but IE/netscape woudl work! i ping all sites ok, but it jsut wont go there!
this thign happened to me jsut few minutes ago, @ 9:40 PM, december 20. Personally i ahve NO idea what may cause this....
any help?
Also, i jsut realized phoenixdsl never charged me for 5 months of service i had...even not for the install...
Thanks | |

| | | peterr join:2000-05-10 Encinitas, CA | Re: FIXED IT! Ah ha - Phoenix also did not charge me, but yesterday I got an email from "billing@phoenixdsl.net" stating that I would now be charged 199.95 to continue service - lets see: 199.95/39.95 = ~5 months - so there you go, you WILL be charged. | |
|
| | | | | This isn't a DHCP problem for me; I'm using static addresses. Like I said, lynx works okay from my bsd box but my windows machines won't connect with netscape/ie. It's really weird. I watched it with TCPDUMP but the result was inconclusive; I got one reply packet back from the web server then nothing else happened. I fixed the problem by installing squid on my unix box and running through the proxy, but that's kind of screwy that I had to do it. Sucks for people with just a windows box at home. I assume those of us stranded with phoenixdsl service will just have to live with degrading service until our contracts are up and we're thrown out in the street. (I wonder if this is some kind of anti-NAT filter they're experimenting with.) | |

| | | | | | Re: FIXED IT!- maybe not
OK so changing network cards worked last night, but I just woke up and the damn problem re-appeared! BTW-I too have a static IP and havent been billed yet either, and if they do send me a bill im not paying it cuz they never sent me my rebate.
Anyway, I think it might be the proxy settings that IE & Netscape use, since I cant do a Norton Live Update because it uses IE's proxy settings. Does anyone know the manual proxy settings for phoenix? Also, anyone know where your supposted to specify host & domain for a nic in win2k? Its not under tcp/ip settings. I never had it filled in before, but i want to try it now since that might be part of the problem as well.....
Damn you phoenix!

| | | | | | | Re: FIXED IT!- maybe not Woke up today and the internet works...well, worked...
However, a funny thing happened to me yesterday: Yesterday, internet stopped working on all 5 computers in my house - aol would still connect ftp works, etc... I used aol browser to post a comment here and surf the internet for a while, but then suddenly it also stopped working (couldnt connec to its proxy server). I was messing with my settings and at some point IE (BUT NOT NETSCAPE) started going to microsoft.com and any microsoft subdomains without any troubles....My first thought? IS BILL GATES TALKING OVER THE INTERNET?!??!?!?!
Also, once i created my account, i created myself a email address @phoenixdsl.com i have a right to have 5 email accounts and now i want to use that right - but i dont seem to be able to reach tech support.... when shoul i call? or should i call megapath or someone else?
Just now when i was about to post this, the internet died again, but now - big time - nothing will work. I can ping my gateway fine tho. Trace route to www.microsoft.com or www.yahoo.com times out after hitting br1-g8-0-0.nyc.dbn.net (216.178.226.10)
DAMN YOU PHOENIX!

|
| | I received a letter from Telocity yesterday confirming that in January I will be switched. No modem ship charge. I called the number in the letter and was told the SDSL line was being cut over to them and was not going to be reprovisioned over to my voice line. | |
