Phorm Worked With U.S. ISPs, Too And it's likely few consumers ever consented or knew... While NebuAD has gotten plenty of heat in the U.S. for their plan to buy user browsing data from ISPs and deliver targeted ads, a company in the UK by the name of Phorm has seen even greater scrutiny. That's in part because the company began its money-making life as a spyware and rootkit developer named121 Media. Whereas NebuAD is fairly forthcoming about their systems (even if ISPs aren't), Phorm tries to warm consumers to the idea by pretending that their system can protect users from phishing scams. The company also found itself under fire when it was revealed that they conducted a secret trial with British Telecom, without anyone bothering to tell consumers. A former rootkit developer secretly buying your browsing history under the guise of an anti-phishing solution obviously rubbed people the wrong way, but only in the UK where Phorm was supposedly active. But now it appears that Phorm conducted trials of the technology with American ISPs as well: According to a Phorm spokesman, these so-called services were rolled out by a handful of "emerging Wi-Fi network services providers," including EthoStream, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based operation that provides wireless access for hotels. Phorm says that it's no longer working with these ISPs and that it now has "no business partnerships in the States." But in the spring, rumor had it that AT&T and Qwest were on the verge of deploying the company's ad technologies. As with NebuAD, it's doubtful that any of these customers were alerted to the fact that their browsing activity was being tracked, nor was the opt-out option effective.

For all the rest all you have to do is enable the sites you most frequent(your bank, google, yahoo) and it remembers your choice so that when you return to those sites noscript will enable those scripts/java/flash. I wish. Truth is that I do probably surf like someone who is searching porn all the time -- visiting many different sites every day. (I visit blogs and "news" sites like there is no tomorrow doing research on telecom issues, lately.) said by rawwhide:For all the rest all you have to do is enable the sites you most frequent(your bank, google, yahoo) and it remembers your choice so that when you return to those sites noscript will enable those scripts/java/flash. | | Ironic It's ironic how the Internet used to be such an anonymous service only to have that stripped away by greedy ISPs and businesses. It's sad, but the writing is on the wall... there is no such thing as privacy on the Internet, or really any place else for that matter.

It's sad, but the writing is on the wall... there is no such thing as privacy on the Internet, or really any place else for that matter. Privacy went away when people wanted free applications delivered over the internet. Free doesn't mean no cost. And to recover those costs, the "free" services started delivering targeted ads and the selling of user info. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. Targeted ads which are the privacy issue just make those ad dollars more effective. General advertising works fine, it has for years. Free services do not need to use targeted ads.
