Pie charts done in flash
Addition to forum poll feature

Click for full size
Somewhere in darkest Lithuania, a talented flash programmer is churning out graph widgets. So I downloaded a copy of the files, (free if you don't remove the link back to him), and tried it out as an alternative forum poll results viewing option.

Example firewall poll results using the flash widget. Original results view in plain html. So what do you think? I'm a bit reluctant to spread flash around as the ONLY way to view data, but this was easy to implement and provides a cheap thrill (click the slices for some bouncy fun).

It doesn't work too well when there are a LOT of poll options as tiny slices are difficult to depict and the legend tends to grow bigger than the flash window (in the example every small choice gets lumped into the white "other" slice), but the visual display is still interesting.

By the way, the bible on visual display of information is this book. I can still remember where I was the day I first saw the Napoleon chart!

Sharp!

Very slick.

Maybe you can limit display to when there's less than 'x' number of options (I don't know what # makes sense - maybe 10?). That would take care of the "tiny slice" issue, for the most part.

Pretty Graphics are Good, but...

I'm all for Flash stuff, but I don't have access to it everywhere. Perhaps Flash display can fail-over to plain-jane HTML rather than a message telling me to upgrade flash?

The link to forum poll "results" is now two links, so pick the regular one if you don't have flash.

Re: Pretty Graphics are Good, but...

I have flash, but the link didn't appear for me on the initial results view. The green bars showed up like normal with no immediate way to view the pie chart. Only after reloading the thread could I view the Flash.

I haven't noticed whether or not this behavior still occurs.

There are two links below forum polls, see screenshot above. I don't think either do anything unexpected.

But it's immediately following your vote where the link isn't present.

Re: Pretty Graphics are Good, but...

true, if you vote, you're assumed lowest common denominator. I should add an alternative view link to that display.
