Pioneer 10 falls silent after 7.6 billion miles
by overhill Wednesday 26-Feb-2003
Pioneer 10, the first spacecraft to venture out of the solar system, has fallen silent after traveling billions of miles from Earth on a mission that has lasted nearly 31 years, NASA said Tuesday.

What was apparently the spacecraft's last signal was received January 22 by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Deep Space Network. At the time, Pioneer 10 was 7.6 billion miles from Earth; the signal, traveling at the speed of light, took 11 hours and 20 minutes to arrive.

The signal and the two previous signals were very faint. The Deep Space Network heard nothing from Pioneer 10 during a final attempt at contact on February 7. No more attempts are planned.

Wow

Its amazing pioneer made it that far and still worked that long. That's from a time when the space program was still respected and got sufficient funding to build such a useful piece of equipment. It kinda makes you feel proud.

Re: Wow

Yeah, it really is amazing what it has done. It is also amazing to think of some of its sibling probes. Pioneer 11 is presumably still roaming around although we lost contact with it in 1995. Voyager 1 and 2 are still both beaming back signals and seem to be functioning well. While I haven't seen updated numbers for a little while, based upon its speed in January 2001, Voyager 1 should be around 8.2 billion miles from Earth. Those are just staggering numbers!! Lucky for us it is estimated that Voyager 1 and 2 both have enough power and fuel to continue informing us that they exist until 2020.

Re: Wow

what's even more amazing is that of all the people to reply to this thread you're like.. 10 miles from me. (just that was kinda wierd, lol)

Anyways, I thought voyager 1 stopped transmitting back in the 80's but of course i'm probably wrong. Anyways, now i'm off to do some research on the voyager program. I wish the media had broadcasted this story when it came out.

Re: Wow

Yeah, that is kind of cool...were talking about distance like 7.6 billion miles...from 10 miles away...;)

Voyager 1 and 2 are still kicking! »voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/
