Pirates Speed up the Works
Pirated films, games, hit the web at light speed
(old news - 02:59PM Tuesday Nov 12 2002)
tags: legal · Fileswapping
With greater broadband adoption rates comes greater piracy, as leaked films, games and music are hitting file trading networks more quickly than ever before, usually months before release. One of the most highly anticipated games of next year, Doom 3, was leaked last week (in early alpha form) and the 380MB file quickly found its way to every corner of the internet. The film industry hasn't fared much better against pirates with broadband connections, as the latest Harry Potter film, set for release this Friday, has already started making the rounds.

Dont bother getting the Doom III alpha

they call it an alpha because its chunky like rocks, even with a ti4200 128mb ddr. i know because i, uh, saw my friend play it on his computer.

and the load times are waaaay long. but the graphics are awesome, if they fix the bugs ill be sure to buy the game when it comes out. see advance marketing in action!

Bugs? This is an EARLY ALPHA version a.k.a work in progress. I can't believe it, some people already bitching because this leaked alpha version does not work like they expect.

I don't know what you are talking about. I mean, it should not have been released on the net if it was too buggy for people to even play it! Gosh, c'mon! This game is obviously of inferior quality and makes me not even want to buy it when the final version is officially released for sale.

Why is it that when M$ releases an alpha everyone wants it. They want to be the first to see the new Microshit product. But when a game like Doom3 comes out in alpha form and doesn't perform perfectly you dont want to even think about buying it. If its such a problem for you then why did you get an illegal alpha version and try it.

One piece of advice: GET A REAL COMPUTER. Thats right quit running it on your daddy's little 166 with a 8mb video card and get a real computer. Get one at »www.tigertv.com. Make sure to get the gamer's upgrade so you'll have a 120GB 7200RPM HD and 128mb video card. Then load up the alpha. I believe you'll see this game is going to be a great piece of art when it is released in a legal public form.

How 'bout building your own? Cheaper, better quality, and better performance. Get a P4 3.06, 2 gigs PC1066 RDRAM, and 4 200 GB drives in a RAID 0 array. Stick that with an NV30 and a Prometia vapor-phase cooler, and OC that thing to around 3.8GHz. Now that's a computer.

It's not the video card, it's the memory that matters more with the alpha. My friend with 384MB RAM and a Ti4600 got worse framerates then my other friend with 768MB RAM and a GeForce 2 MX200.

Makes sense. If its an alpha, theres still an ass-load of debugging code in there that will not be in the final release. Gotta have that extra room for it.

Damn straight dude. Start with a good Antec case, a decent MB, The best high speed DDR Ram ( I recommend Cruical ) that you can afford, A good AMD processor, a killer video card ( ti 4600 is awesome ) and a decent eide 7200 hd. You can add all the other stuff later.

naaa a real gaming rig, start with a nice smooth antec 1080AMG or 1040B II, add a true intel motherboard built with either intel i845PE or i850E chipsets, 1gig+ ram ddr333/400(look up on samsung, thats who corsair uses for their XML overclockers ram, or crucial/micron)or use rdram, p4 2.4-3.06, nice WD caviar SE 7200rpm 8mb buffer HDD, a gainward gf4 ti4200-ti4600 Golden Sample, and add a nice 850+cfm squirrel cage with a K&N 1000+cfm rated filter blowing over the processor and vent the case with some fat 120mm 150+cfm exhaust fans running your favorite distro of linux/bsd/solaris/unix or whatever you prefer......you can get some real performance outta that beast

The funny thing about it is Microsoft charges people for that privilege. No free alpha or beta tests on anything other than their games.

Talk about easy killer. The guy was bitching about the performance of an Alpha...and not any Alpha...the title that will test hardware that hasn't even been released yet. Anyone who would criticise an alpha on any level is a total tard.

It just goes to show that even if you give it away someone's gonna bitch!

To those who complain about it:
1. How much did you pay for it?
2. And you expect it to work?

If you took your car to a mechanic and didn't pay him for his work, would you expect your car to work too?

If you expect someone else to work for free, then you must be willing to work for free too...

BTW, I have plenty of yard work to do at my house so come on over. We'll see how much work you'll actually do for free...

Yep...some people are truly retarded. For me the Alpha ran just fine. Sure...my frame rates dropped into the single digits when face to face with zombies but the lighting engine and game in general just gave us a taste of the coolness that is ID. DOOMIII rocks.

The alpha is only the first few levels. That combined with the fact that it reportedly runs poorly on anything less than a hardcore gaming machine will probably disuade me from bothering. I'll just wait until the real version comes out and pirate that, and stick with Counter Strike for now.

Doom 3 is sloooow

I tried both Alpha & Beta and their load times were rediculus, but thats why they are are still in beta's. But your right the graphics were absolutly breath taking, and I was trying on a 4400, and it killed the card. I wonder what the requirements are going to be next year for it? ATI Radeon 9700 Pro? Geez.. It takes like 10 minutes to load everything, basically long enough to go to the kitchen, get a drink, and a snack, and do a short bathroom break, and than move back to the pc. =)

Re: Doom 3 is sloooow

The load times are slow and the graphics "kill" your vid card because the game isn't finished yet. It hasn't even been optimized for play yet. What did you expect? The game to be perfect? They might even remove a portion or two before it's ready for distribution. In some of the mags they even said it would run on a geforce 4 and that is with everything turned on. ATI Radeon 9700 Pro? Hell, even NFS:HS2 would run like crap on that card. LOL

Underground Marketing

I half suspected it WAS a marketing ploy. A great way for a huge number of people to be sneaky and see your great new game. This people feel like they are being clever and "in" on the internet thing, plus they get their demo out.

BTW. The graphics were awesome (and laggy)

Game shops like to use screenshots and overly generous previewers to create hype....not a leaked incomplete version that (as indicated above) gives players an incorrect gauge of the quality they can expect.....

Is it legal? Nope.

I am not as worried about the movie industry because DVD is reasonably priced and sells very well. If someone wants to use a camcorder on a first run movie, people will download. However, it will be trashed as soon as the DVD comes out for most audiophiles and videophiles.

I understand the fustration of the studios, software companies, bands, and record companies. The internet is becoming a breeding ground for illegal activity and it is almost impossible to regulate. P2P may be the killer app broadband was waiting for. The thing that I wonder is will it still be a killer app when 90% of what it is being used for is illegal? Full versions of software, cracks, full movies, and music can all be downloaded with a quick click of the mouse.

It is justified by the people doing the downloading with a bunch of reasons...

"(insert company name) is greedy. Therefore, it is ok for me to download and share this stuff."

"(insert company name) meant for this stuff to get out. It was a marketing ploy! It is legal for me to download it."

"(insert company name) has crap security. They have no one to blame but themselves."

Sorry, but those excuses don't take away from the issue that these things are illegal. If you are going to take part in illegal activities, then don't try to justify it.

I don't know what the future holds for the internet or for P2P. No one knows for sure. Right now, the internet userbase has a stranglehold. The government is powerless to stop it. When one P2P software package gets shut down, two more pop up to replace it.

Piracy Schmiracy

How soon people forget.

Remember when SpiderMan first came around to theatres? It was all over the net. The quality varied from watchable, to unwatchable. For months afterward, many sources were flooded with copies. Did this kill theatrical sales? No. It grossed over $200 Million in it's first 2 weeks in theatres.

Fast Forward to a couple of weeks ago when it was released on DVD. 1st weekend sales were on the order of 11 million copies sold, with an estimated revenue of almost $200 million. Add that to the $200 Million made in theatres the first 2 weekends, and you get close to a half billion dollars for a movie that cost $31 million dollars to make.

Where is the so-called "piracy" ruining the industry?

Harry Potter II was released to the internet 2 days ago, and the movie doesn't even release theatrically for another 3 days. Just watch, I'm willing to bet that the 1st weekend theatrical sales break records.

Why? Probably because it's a good movie. The only way I see the "piracy" hurting any movie is if it's a lame movie to begin with. People preview it, and word of mouth fills the theatres..... or not....Who want's to make a prediction as to how soon you can get "Scooby Do" for under $9.95 from the bargain bin? (or is it already there?)

Exactly. I think hollywood's biggest fear is people will see ahead of time that some of their big budget flicks just stink. Only people didn't pay $10 a pop to find out.

I couldn't agree more to this. If I enjoy watching a movie that I viewed on the internet, I am going to buy it on DVD just for the better quality. I see no point into gambling with your money to see if a movie will be worth it or not!

Don't categorize P2P e-pinions

That's exactly right. I also agree that P2P is past the "Is it legal?" phase, and moving on to it's next, bigger scale, piracy controversy. Despite the huge number of complaints from the MPAA, movies still have one of the biggest profit rates in the country. What I love about P2P is it gives people a chance at previewing a shit quality movie a week before its release before they go out and blow 10 bucks to see the real deal. How I see it is, P2P makes the film and music industry produce better media and gives them less of a chance to screw the under-rated consumer. P2P gives the people power, and as long as it exists, organizations like the MPAA and RIAA are gonna be there to try and take it away.

Not Intendeded....

The doom III alpha was not intended to be released to the public. So when you download it and it doesn't work like you want it to stfu because you're not suppose to have it in the first place. And once again...it is an alpha, before beta. The game isn't coming out for another year for a reason....
c0mmander

Re: Not Intendeded....

exactly, im saying its chunky because its still in alpha stage

that would be unacceptable for a beta though. load times are HUGE, u'll need a geforce 5 or 6. or radeon 10k

nonetheless most "illegally released" items are inside jobs, whether it be game alphas, movies, mp3's, they typically come from the inside since we the public have no access to them.

*releasing* a game alpha will not hurt game sales at all, game piracy has been effectively halted thanks to the unique serial Key that becomes deactivated should two people try to play online at the same time.

meanwhile that CD copy protection stuff they put on games is completely useless, it wastes electricity by having to load at the beginning from CD and plus there are CD cracks anyway. legitimate users are punished for buying the actual product.

I agree, I want to burn my copies of Empire Earth so both me and my sister could play online at the same time, but not since i heard about the key thingy deactivated.

I hate that copy protection, its so stupid, but can be easily bypassed. Also the CD key only affects multplayer hosted by the company. You can still play a LAN or IP game with a pirated copy.

sadly valve has also added to bs by doing this.
now dod, cs, tfc, half life online now default to secure (aka. you cheat all secure servers ban you for 24 hours. you get caught with a bad key your screwed }or you could get a cdkey gen. don know if it would check out though{)

so what it comes to you lose your online game with anymod if your cdkey is in use because if you watch the console it does contact won to authenticate. its almost got me ready to buy games from now on. i still say a pirated version of xp is fine though. i mean who can afford the 200 - 400 doller os anyway. sad but true. i know its wrong i dont dispute that but i dont care.

...the so called "Piracy" isn't going to affect anything, if anything, the Doom III alpha leak is the biggest hype and exposure you could get... you can't even *pay* money for this kinda free press and exposure.

DOOM III will smash sales records, my predictions. Oh and Harry Potter? Yeah, like downloading some crappy version will stop kids from seeing the movie--- Riiight.

What's the point? I got my LOTR DVD for free for looking at a Kia. That disk had a $5 rebate included for the extended edition. I just got that for $28 shipped. Included a cool T-shirt, and a free ticket to the Two Towers. So $28 - $5 rebate - $10 Tshirt - $8 movie ticket. So basically $5 for 6 DVDs of LOTR goodness.

The only thing that sux, is that it looks and sounds so good, it makes me want to buy a progressive scan dvd and monitor, ditch my old prologic reciever, and get a beefy 6.1 receiver with a nice, fat subwoofer.
