Entire city must be wired within six years...

After signing citywide franchise agreements with New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington DC, Verizon is now close to signing a citywide franchise agreement for FiOS and FiOSTV with Pittsburgh city officials. According to Multichannel News, the ten year agreement is close to being signed off on, and requires Verizon to wire the entire city within six years. If the agreement is anything like the previous agreements, it will allow Verizon to wiggle out of that obligation once they've covered all desired areas for a small penalty. Verizon will pay 5% of gross revenue to Pittsburgh, the same amount paid by Comcast, who's citywide franchise expires later this year.

Wow

All these cities - yet they couldn't come to an agreement with Wilmington, DE -

Classic.

Thank God i'm in the "suburbs" of Wilmington enjoying my 124 HD channels while friends in the 'city limits' are stuck with Comcast!

Re: Wow

No cherry picking in the "City of Champions", there are numerous neighborhoods here like Homewood, E Liberty and Lincoln/Larimer that have Fios available (telco & data), and these areas are well below the average household income etc. Not to mention numerous boarded up houses, but hey what's good for one, is good for another !!

You stole my line, DAMN!!!!!

I was surprised at that. Considering the amount of Fios I see on the poles in places like Riverside, and at 22nd and Lamonte Sts. Just about the WORST sections of town, yet the city can't come to a franchise agreement.

Sorry, but after watching the state legislature balance the budget on the backs of state employees (no raise for 4 years, even when the economy was truckin') while they meet in closed session to make sweetheart deals to buy useless office buildings from MBNA, and golf courses, I can't help but think this is another example of the "Delaware way".

Screw the people, I got elected so I got mine!

Odd...

Wasn't Verizon PAID to completely light up the State of Penn with fiber years ago?

WTF happened - take the money and run?

Not to be nit picky, but Wilmington, DE is in Delaware.

Delaware ceased being part of Pennsylvania on June 15, 1776...

While it was part of the original land grant to William Penn, it always had it's own separate governor.

Just sayin'....

That's not what he said. In the last year, Verizon's inked deals with several cities - NYC, DC, Philly, Allentown (ok, not on par with the others, still it counts), and now Pittsburgh. But when they tried to ink a deal with Wilmington, the city backed out - they were concerned about the terms of the deal. I think what JeepMatt was saying is that all these other major cities were able to get it done - what's Wilmington's problem? Why can't they get it done?

It has nothing to do with the fact that Pittsburgh is in PA and Wilmington is in DE. It's not the states that have been the sticking point (well, they haven't given green lights for state-wide franchise agreements which would circumvent this), it's the cities. And the one city in the region that can't seem to make it happen is Wilmington.

Re: Odd...

Actually, the Verizon deal Dadkins refers to had nothing to do with TV, but with network connectivity.

My response was part of a thread started by JeepMatt that SPECIFICALLY mentioned Wilmington, De.

Dadkins then responded mentioning the Verizon deal to light up all of PA. It is more than reasonable (considering I spend more time in Delaware, than I do in my home state of PA) to draw the conclusion that he mistakenly failed to understand the exact location of Wilmington, or the fact that DE is even a state.

Not saying that was his intention, but folks from Delaware can attest to the fact that some people fail to understand it is an autonomous state. I told someone I was from Delaware once, and they asked me "Isn't that part of New Jersey". And it wasn't a joke, they were dead serious....

They did bring fiber to all of PA, you can order a $10000/mo T3 loop today anywhere in PA.

Bout time.

Been hearing about it forever. Finally it's going to happen. I'd like to switch when it comes around. I'll have to check out the deals first. I know they'll be coming up with something.

It figures too, I just had Comcast replace the outside wiring and to this one room. Modem wouldn't stay connected. Works great now. My power levels haven't moved at all. 19 days since last reset and the log is still empty!
Guess I got lucky.

Here are a couple of local TV News stories on the subject.

I can't wait

It is about time, and I can't wait to sign up. I just hope my Central Office isn't one that they decided to take a penalty on.

The Verizon Pirates

If Verizon really wants to do Pittsburgh a proper, they'd buy the Pirates and invest some money in the team and help bring that once-proud franchise back to respectability.

Then again, considering how incompetently Verizon handles many of its corporate affairs, that might turn out to be a classic case of the blind leading the blind. On second thought, the Pirates & their fans have suffered enough. Hands off the Buckos!

Re: The Verizon Pirates

No they will not buy the pirates ok lol. Now if your residents would demand ownership to invest on the team or sell the team instead of being happy with the penguins and steelers only the story of the pirates would be different. Any good ownership can win in that town, because the steelers and penguins have proved that.I am a baseball fan, and for God sakes even the Tampa bay rays are a good team now after years of being the laughing stock of baseball.

Verizon should diversify like Cablevision or Comcast. Once you own the market's local baseball team, you own TV market. Sadly football teams can't be easily owned, and they can't sign TV transmission contracts AFAIK.

Damn

Looks like verizon and all the citys are making deals that an entire city must be covered by a certain time.

NYC by 2014, Pittsburgh by 2015, I wonder what'll happen if they're not?
