Powell To Genachowski: 'Go Out There And Get Dirty'
Former FCC bosses give advice to under-fire Genachowski
FCC boss Julius Genachowski has been seeing a lot of criticism lately, in large part because in trying to make everybody happy -- he's essentially made nobody happy. He's never been particularly clear on where he stands on most issues, and in speeches generally tries to appeal to all sides with vague rhetoric. He's now even got ex-FCC bosses Reed Hundt, Kevin Martin and Michael Powell giving him advice last week on what he's doing wrong. Powell in particularly urged Genachowski to "go out there and get dirty":
quote:
You have to invest your capital and take the risks. There is no solution where people will bring you the right things. You're going to have to go out there and get dirty. We need to see you; we need to see you go out there and invest yourself and make clear to all the players what are your bottom lines and what are the kind things you'll accept and not accept and really help drive this crazy plane and get it landed. I don't think you can hope it gets resolved on its own.
Of course whether Genachowski wants to take Powell's advice is another matter entirely. Powell not only engaged in deregulatory action that contributed to the stale state of broadband competition in the United States, he's also now essentially acting as a public relations employee for a lobbying coalition of large carriers dubbed Broadband For America, who'd probably prefer it if Genachowski telegraphed his political intent well in advance -- for easier dismantling.

Powell - out of shadows & in to a target

What Powell is trying to do is move the opponent(Genachowski) out of the shadows and in to the limelight. You then become a much easier target to shoot at. This is a long time political trick. Politicians try to get by by saying nothing quotable or that can be taken out of context. But if you can get your opponent shooting his mouth off to the press over & over, the odds are high he can be hung out to dry over some shortened quote.

Genachowski has gotten by so far by basically saying nothing but platitudes. If they can get him to actually say publicly what he is trying to do behind the scenes, they can really attack him.

And Genachowski has used FCC's Copps to put out all the outrageous socialist ideas while he hides in the shadows. If Genachowski actually espoused the ideas that he uses Copps to put out as trial balloons, he would get slaughtered in the press.

But Genachowski won't be baited by Powell. He will continue remaining in the shadows as is his nature. He is a behind the scenes bureaucrat and not looking to be on network TV.

Oh yes and this is coming from the person who though BPL was the best thing since sliced bread, and twist off tops for beer bottles.

There's that buzz word the republicans like to throw around.

The only good thing I've heard about the FCC doing lately, going after Comcast for network neutrality violations, got struck down by the court.

They're slowing down the Comcast/NBC merger, but we'll see if they actually stop it.

hahahahahahaha! there is not a chance in hell that merger will be stopped.

the only question related to that is whether there will be ANY conditions on the merger, and if there are, whether the conditions will be meaningful AT ALL.

my prediction: token conditions that will never be followed and certainly won't be enforced; comcast will make a big deal about them and bitch and moan, then proceed to offer token compliance.

Will they be any conditions? Yes, will they be meaningful at all? Yes for Comcast and No for us.

Why? Because of your leanings? Or because you don't believe Copps espouses socialist ideas? Read his rants at FCC.Gov for proof.

Probably because Conservatives who use the term don't know what they're talking about. They throw it around as a buzzword, not realizing how wrong they are.

Sorry man. Republitards are just as bad as Democraps. They *all* need to be kicked out of office, and new people need to be brought in.

Right wingers hate so-called "socialism" until it pays their medical bills, buys groceries, and keeps their business from folding. Likewise, a subsidized gig of fiber Internet bandwidth would be socialism until it came to their doorstep.

Copps

If Copps in a socialist, I'm all for socialism. But from what I can tell, he just refuses to become a corporate errand boy--unlike some of the people commenting on this post.
