Price Chopper alcohol policy leaves patrons over 40 waiting Tipped by vaxvms
By Dan McLean You must be at least 21 years old to buy alcohol in Vermont. But if you appear to be older than 40, you'll need approval from a Price Chopper supervisor before leaving the supermarket with a six-pack or a bottle of merlot. Price Chopper, based in Schenectady, N.Y., has instituted a chain-wide policy that the sale of beer, wine, wine coolers or malt liquor to any customer who appears to be at least 40 years old be approved by a supervisor or manager, supermarket spokeswoman Mona Golub said Friday. Anyone who appears younger than 40 must provide identification to the cashier. Those who appear to be older than 40 are not carded but must wait for a manager's approval. story continues..

| I think they have it backwards... Me thinks they have this policy backwards...over 40 must be approved by supervisor but under 40 only ID is needed. You would think the policy would be reversed - under 40 needs supervisor approval and over 40 shows ID.

 | | Sounds like they're being manipulative. quote: The supermarket implemented a policy 1 1/2 years ago that checked identifications on all alcohol purchases, but it was not well received, she said. "We had a number of customers that were very uncomfortable with that," she said, particularly those older than 50.
"The ideal solution is to be able to card everyone without anyone finding that offensive. And that's where we're are going with this one," Golub said of the current alcohol sales procedure.
So the people over 50 didn't want to get carded, but now they're being forced to go through the hassle of being "approved" by a supervisor. I'm thinking when they revamp the policy again and go back to carding everyone, the over-50 crowd is supposed to be relieved and accepting of the policy after this experiment in "careful what you wish for" manipulation. -- Get your daily dose of wonder from the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD).
