Qualcomm / Nokia Settle Patent Dispute
Fifteen-year deal works out for both sides
by KathrynV Sunday 27-Jul-2008 tags: legal · business · wireless
Qualcomm and Nokia have been in court battling each other regarding patents for awhile now. As of this week, they have settled their disputes in a move that seems to have benefits to them both.

"Nokia will pay less in royalties to Qualcomm – perhaps half of what it previously paid – under Wednesday's surprise litigation settlement and 15-year licensing deal, analysts said yesterday. But the complex agreement includes a significant lump sum and the transfer of an undisclosed number of Nokia patents, making it difficult to say which side got the better deal."

The deal should prevent lawsuits of this kind for the next fifteen years which allows the businesses to each move forward with their independent and joint plans for the future.

Lawyers' bills?

Wonder if someone added up the additional costs for litigation and decided that sharing was a cheaper way to go?

15 years is an eternity in the US system where most items are looked at month to month, and woe if it does not give double digit returns each time. Question is, how long this will last before someone files a suit against it because they can see a potential profit tomorrow and who cares about next week? Pessimistic? After seeing it happen many times, yes.

Qualcomm did well

and right after the announcement their stock jumped almost 8 points... I see a bright future ahead for Q.. I remember working with them back in the late 90's... Smart company... Thank you Q for CDMA..

That's a Win

"The deal should prevent lawsuits of this kind for the next fifteen years which allows the businesses to each move forward with their independent and joint plans for the future."

That strikes me as win-win all around....
