Qwest Adds Just 7,000 Broadband Users In Q2
DOCSIS 3.0 available in 60% of Qwest markets now
by Karl Bode Monday 09-Aug-2010 tags: business · bandwidth
According to Qwest's second quarter earnings, the company added just 7,000 new broadband subscribers on the quarter, down from 40,000 new subscriber additions during the first quarter of this yea, and 33,000 new subscriber additions this time last year. According to Qwest, the company added roughly 52,000 new fiber to the node customers during the quarter, but they lost 45,000 DSL users who disconnected from slower DSL service, which in many markets tops out at 1.5 Mbps -- and simply can't compete with faster cable service. Qwest's earnings call transcript is worth a read, in which Qwest COO Teresa Taylor talks about how DOCSIS 3.0 is now available in about 60% of Qwest's network, and how Qwest isn't entirely certain what's behind an overall sag in broadband adds this quarter for most carriers.

Upper management doesn't care already have golden parachutes

Ran US West into the ground starting with Ma Bell breakup right through Qwest days. No care for customers in the last few years. What we have is what you get. Sold everything from their cell parts twice, Media One and Dex, Nothing left to plunder and just mouth service on DSL anywhere but select areas. " but they lost 45,000 DSL users who disconnected from slower DSL service, which in many markets tops out at 1.5 Mbps -- and simply can't compete with faster cable service."
Now the last upper management gets theirs from the sale to Century Link.

DSL is dying

Just more proof that DSL is dying and that 4 Mbps is too low a goal to set for a national broadband plan.

DUH!

So...they have DOCSIS 3 in 60% of their markets now, and in many of those markets (like mine) don't even have FTTN...and they don't know why their customer base is fleeing? Geez guys...

Try dealing with them on an enterprise level. It's even worse. Wanting 2-3x+ what other ISPs are quoting, while being even more reluctant to build out anything new. They might even quote you something reasonable, but then call back blaming a software glitch, magically raising the price to twice the original quote.

I wonder where our tax money even goes.....

Re: DUH!

I've heard as much from web hosts et al trying to get bandwidth from them. Like pulling teeth. Except worse.

They used to have small business crews. Then wham a tech is a tech and can do everything. So bye bye small business crews and ?
Now they think DSL trained broadband techs can do a lot of what a CDT tech does for large businesses and special circuits. One morning you are a DSL residential tech and that afternoon doing business circuits. Ok almost that bad. The techs think they are now hot stuff. Really they are under trained and not what a CDT tech is. They are basking in their specialness all the while a customer is wondering if they know anything about special circuits or the difference between a residential account and a business account.
In the middle of nowhere in small cities a combo tech who does everything makes sense. In a large city some building have larger switches and more electronics than a CO in a small town. Saying that just any old tech can do that is one reason why Qwest is bleeding on the business side. Those upgraded residential techs are too self centered to see their weaknesses.

Are they saying that DOCSIS 3.0 is what feeds the remote terminals?

Most people still get 1.5Mbps DSL, so they could feed it with anything.

Re: DUH!

Well, not *anything*...EvDO wouldn't have *quite* enough bandwidth, and neither would a single T1. Dual T1s though...:p

Qwest = FAIL

I don't live in a large area, I mean I am in Cheyenne, WY. It is however the state capital. There are well over 50,000 people in the city and we sit at the intersection of I-25 and I-80. There is plenty of core fiber / back haul networks running right through us. Yet we have craptastic residential internet options available to us. I have lived in three areas of the city, two were established neighborhoods, the other was a new-ish development. All could not see Qwest internet above 1.5Mbps.

On the business front, I contacted Qwest about a month ago for a couple dedicated circuits, wanted 25Mbps on each. I haven’t received a phone call back since my initial conversation. Thankfully other more established companies were able to assist me in my need there.

Not Surprised-Why Buy Crap Make Your Own

Qwest and its predecessor have allowed the infrastructure to decay even in large cities like Phoenix. Then they cherry pick neighborhoods to run in some fiber and waste money in outright lying TV ads about their super fast connections. It's all Bullsh-t and I wish they would die so a better company might arise from the ashes.

whatever

Yet the union members are now petitioning the states to not allow the merger unless the all deserving retirees still get to keep full health insurance after 30 years and retiring at 50.
Plus they could care less about new hires or anyone with less years.

Re: whatever

You mostly likely have a choice to use cable in your area...? Prob why they offer those speeds.

Re: whatever

Jinjimbob, I live in an area where I can get cable up to 20mbit, and Qwest still won't cough up DSL past 1.5mbit (that won't even stay stable at that speed and they try to browbeat you into downgrading to 640/256). I'm sure in some areas it's about competition, but in other areas it's just a mystery. A few miles from here, people can get the 20mbit speed packages from Qwest. I'd settle for 7mbit. For now, I stay with cable until the speed issue gets sorted out. The days of 1.5mbit being acceptable for me and eventually my daughter when she's old enough to use the internet much are long gone.

yeah I think we are kinda lucky. Qwest has really in the last few years caught up to the competition (comcast, UTOPIA).

UTOPIA is still way ahead of both, but Qwest price wise is competitive with Comcast

and in other news, the sky is blue

This is unsurprising. Qwest is beyond horrible bandwidth, offering only 1.5/896 DSL. They've not lift a finger to improve service since I moved to this address 25 months ago, they continue to deliver 1996-levels of service. Hell, I'd settle for a solidly 2005 level of service (8mbps), but no. Pouring salt in my wounds, Comcast offers 50mbps about 2000ft away from my house, but for reasons beyond my comprehension, won't come into my subdivision. So, foo on them, too, basically.

I hope the FCC puts a gun to their head, but realistically, they're completely hapless, leaving me completely hopeless.

Haha no shock

Given that I work in a "downtown" of a 90,000 person suburb, and the best they can give me is a flaky 144k IDSL circuit, I'm not surprised in the least. Many other businesses are even farther than I am on the same trunk.

Where's the damned RT you promised us year after year after year since 2001... (The irony is back then I was the guy selling DSL services for a local ISP then, so many people didn't like not being able to get service).

Qwest: If my company would pay the $11,000 to trench for Comcast cable, I'd cut you off in an instant. I'm trying to get coporate to get me a T-1 for my store but I can only imagine you'd screw that up to.
