However, the company has big plans for staying in business
(old news - 02:12PM Saturday Apr 05 2008)
tags: business · wireless · Qwest.net
The housing crisis in the United States is getting blamed for everything financial these days and Qwest appears to have jumped on the finger-pointing bandwagon. A recent announcement that the company’s CFO has decided to resign also included a quiet statement that “business is slowing partly because of the housing crisis that is sapping demand for new hookups”.

A more direct profit loss for the company has come from the fact that Qwest buys the homes of top-level employees required to relocate and is unable to sell them for the same amount in today’s housing market. The company just reported a nearly two million dollar loss after the sale of CEO Ed Mueller’s home.

Qwest’s financial problems have caused predictions that the company is likely to face an acquisition in the near future. However, new reports say that there are a series of announcements to be released soon about Qwest’s plans for development. The company is actively “working with DirecTV, Microsoft and other partners on technology to help customers easily move video and other content between devices inside a home” and intends to demo its technology in the near future.

LOL

It's not a smart business move when these companies offer the world to their over priced CEOs. First they get multi million dollar salaries and then they are given million dollar homes.

I have no sympathy for Qwest.

Re: LOL

Well there is no other job in the world that rewards such blatant failure and ineptness with a 100 million dollar severance package, than being a CEO. It's quite sad too. Many of these companies get put into financial hardship by this bad leadership. What do they do to remedy it? They give the idiot a huge bonus and good bye package, which is then followed by needing to law of 10,000 employees. Seriously, they need to start telling these morons hit the road and cutting them lose. Their contracts need to state profitability is the only way they will receive bonus or severance. Otherwise, tough luck. If you or I did a bad job, we'd be fired. Become a CEO, and you get rewarded. Amazing.

Uh, Qwest also blames global warming on housing crisis.

Didn't Qwest have financial problems before the housing crisis?

Here's a list they can pick from next week to lay blame on:

1. high price of oil
2. shortage of skilled workers (see this weeks headlines about layoffs and jobless claims)
3. War in the Middle East
4. Hurricane Katrina
5. Global Warming
6. The decline in population of the Spotted Own (that's the 1990's but no one will remember)
7. "the dog ate my binky"

Here's another Qwest CFO headline from 2006...

Both sides will screw the average person over:

Dems:
Tax the middle class to death, and spend it on the illegals in this country, and sue everyone for any form of discrimination.

Republicans:
Sell everything to the highest bidder, offshore all employment possible, and protect all corporations

Forget Inside, Upgrade Pipe

“working with DirecTV, Microsoft and other partners on technology to help customers easily move video and other content between devices inside a home”
Ya that's great and all, but what about the pipe leading to the house, It takes me 9 hours to make an offsite backup. I already have my internal LAN setup & Mythbuntu, I just need something with more upload speed, I can live with 7Mb down, but 700~kb up sucks.

Wish I could get FiOS

Re: Quest

Oh No! Not another excuse by Quest. I'm afraid to check the stock price, please someone do it for me. What was once promissing stock a few years ago really tanked thanks to mis-management.

Re: Quest

How is turning Q stock to S supposed to make you stock go up? Just look at how Sprint's been doing... VZ hasn't been doing too hot either (to my dismay), though better than either of those two.

Lame

How about instead of upgrading the areas that have service deploy new service to areas who cant get more than a land line. Lots of areas Could be deployed in my area but qwest chooses to do upgrades instead of going after NEW deployments, like they did a few years back under Notebaert. Thats probably the reason they are not getting as many new customers.

Got the hookup?

“business is slowing partly because of the housing crisis that is sapping demand for new hookups”.

In related news "demand for new hookups” is still going strong on college campuses across the nation...
