Qwest Brings Back $15 DSL New promotions in face of sour economy, cable competition In an apparent response to a souring economy and strong triple play competition from cable operators in some markets, Qwest appears to be bringing back some promotional DSL tiers for new customers. According to the telco, they're once again offering their 1.5Mbps Qwest Connect Silver High-Speed DSL service for $14.99 a month for a year -- after which users will pay $39.99 a month. The telco is also offering their 7Mbps Connect Platinum DSL tier for $24.99 a month for a year -- after which users pay regularly priced at $49.99 a month. Both of those deals require that the customer sign up for Qwest landline service, which may damper enthusiasm for some. The telco is also trying to nudge customers upward to their faster Platinum, Titanium or Quantum tiers (the latter two being 12 & 20Mbps FTTN service). According to Qwest, they're offering users who upgrade to any of these tiers two free months of service -- provided they sign a two-year long term contract. Qwest's third quarter earnings indicated the company added 61,000 high-speed Internet customers last quarter -- 40,000 of them FTTN. That's compared to the 30,000 broadband customers they added in Q2. In total, the nation's twenty largest ISPs added 1.3 million new customers last quarter, cable operators adding 870,000, or 67% of them. In addition to economic concerns, that's forcing telcos ( including Verizon) to adjust their bundles and promotions. With no wireless division to buoy earnings, Qwest might get hit a little harder than AT&T and Verizon, the baby bell recently announcing that they will need to cut about 1,200 jobs, or about 3% of their work force this quarter.

The problem is that when they are the only service you can get for under $500/month (DirecPC does not count) then it is a good deal even if it is 1.5Mb down 876kb up.... you can get it with a dry line...I have, so no other "unfee's for Phone" service.
edited to add in dry line

| | i just resigned up Its not necessary for the contract service and if you want to, you can actually get their VOIP service. The costs in the end are the same between dsl and landline or dsl and VOIP. But you get better options with the VOIP service so its a personal preference. | |

| How about...no? I don't need a landline. Neither do the college students that abound around me. For them, adn for me, Qwest DSL is still $40 for 1.5, $47 for 5 or 7 Mbit. Also, after-first-year prices are just plain lame.
Let me think about this for a minute...
...still thinking...
...um, nope.
Call me when they have this for dry-line (same prices, same requirements) and they allow me to get 7 Mbit at my location, then well talk.
| | | Stuck on old VDSL DSL no promo for us. So, stuck on the old VDSL now. Super high price for shit. Turned to the Qwest Direct TV for the promo now for resell TV. No promo for vdsl dsl customers. Bleed dry until the switch. Phasing out yet price way more than new stuff. Cox may be looking better. | |
| | | | Re: Stuck on old VDSL DSL no promo for us. So taken advantage to the end on VDSL dsl. Thanks Qwest for caring. Use and abuse to the end. It was great until u dumped on it. Then no way out on DSL and high price until ur new way. Thanks Ed. | |

| Qwest is dry toast-unappetizing Voted with my wallet, dumped DSL service of several years and went back to Cox. Get awesome speeds and high reliability and am not insulted by Qwests mis-leading, perhaps even criminal advertising about fiber services. -- My perception is REALITY | |

| Lousy deal I pay a few dollars more for a 3.0 line than the $39.99 after the promo.
This is why Telecos can't compete; because evidently they're unable. I'm guessing they'll cannibalize their own if they lower rates on lower tiers. But at some point ... --
| | | Prices are dropping with competition The Qwest offer came within hours of the new Comcast "Economy" Plan at $24.99. Then, within a couple days, Comcast stopped promoting that offer (maybe to offer it cheaper?). I would think it's just healthy competition. | |
| | | Same Price Problems Here I have either Road Runner or DSL from the local phone company. Both are $50/month. Quest's deal would be nice if it were a regular price instead of an intro price, and if it didn't require the purchase of phone service too.
Where is that white space broadband? The net is full of ads anyway. A few more ads to get a free connection works for me! It'll fit in nice with my ad sponsored, free, HD, broadcast tv. Let the overpriced cable/internet providers die a merciless death.
