Qwest Cut 1,700 Jobs
As carrier struggles with continued landline losses...
by Karl Bode Tuesday 10-Feb-2009 tags: dsl · business · telco · Qwest.net
After announcing plans to cut 1,200 jobs during the fourth quarter, Qwest's fourth quarter earnings beat analyst estimates, though the numbers indicate they wound up cutting 1,700 jobs in total. The carrier's fourth-quarter net income still dropped 49.5%, primarily due to the continued death of the landline. While Qwest landlines dropped 9.6% on the quarter (about 1.22 million), broadband subscribers rose 9% (54,000). The subscriber additions were driven largely by Qwest's 12Mbps & 20Mbps ADSL2+ offerings, giving the carrier 2.85 million broadband customers at the end of December.

Don't feel sorry for them. I know it will be rough losing a job but they will probably add 10-15 years to their lives. Qwest is a horrible company to work for! I worked for them in AZ for 4 years and it was like working in a sweat shop.

Interesting...

I was just hired by Qwest and there are over 30 people in my new hire class as well as about 6 other classes going on at the same time. Of course, all of us work from home instead of in a office so maybe they are closing some offices down? Who Knows.

Re: Interesting...

I'll have to call a friend of mine who works for Qwest down in the Springs, I hope he isn't among the departing.

For any of you loosing your jobs here is a good resource to get another one. »www.usajobs.gov/

Advertise Those Landlines!

Qwest has been paying for some very expensive direct mail print ads around here, promoting how clear and reliable landlines are.

While the points they are making are valid, I'm not sure how effective they will be.

Re: Advertise Those Landlines!

Given the state of the econonmy - Qwest would have been better off pushing a VoIP (cheap) solution with their high speed DSL.
It worked for Cable... there's no reason it couldn't work for Telco (except for the fast that they wouldn't do it, and they don't have TV)

Qwest will just end up a dumb pipe, er, broadband provider.

They send us ads here too, weekly, saying switch to 7 Mbps or 20 Mbps DSL. Maybe they should know they don't really offer those speeds anywhere near us.

We lose the landline for about 1 week a year, same for DSL.

Old News.

The cuts were made in the 4th quarter of 2008, and not an announcement of new cuts.

Broadband Up?

Not for long if they don't clean up their act. I had 10Mbps SDSL 10 years ago with ZERO services calls over the two years I had it with SprintION and now I can barely get 4Mbps with Qwest and I am 3500 feet from the CO on the same copper. Over the past few weeks my speed has been all over the place. This evening my speed bottomed out at 1.2/723. Then all of a sudden it jumped to 5.6 then leveled off at 4.2. AND to get support that understood my problem much less English, I had to write a blurb in the Qwest forums and then, by chance, a Moderator contacted an upper level Exec. AND I used to work for USWest and yes it was(is) a Shark Tank. I had no problem playing with the other fish and surviving, but I have morals. And that just didn't cut it.

So . . . in time as all these new subscribers either stay and bare the problems or leave through attrition their grand number will stabilize and they will always have enough to pay the bills and that means no innovation nor forefront upgrades for the little guy unless it's absolutely necessary.

The only reason that their POTS numbers are dropping is that their product is too expensive and their TS is crap. And until they learn . . .
