Qwest Cut 1,700 Jobs As carrier struggles with continued landline losses... After announcing plans to cut 1,200 jobs during the fourth quarter, Qwest's fourth quarter earnings beat analyst estimates, though the numbers indicate they wound up cutting 1,700 jobs in total. The carrier's fourth-quarter net income still dropped 49.5%, primarily due to the continued death of the landline. While Qwest landlines dropped 9.6% on the quarter (about 1.22 million), broadband subscribers rose 9% (54,000). The subscriber additions were driven largely by Qwest's 12Mbps & 20Mbps ADSL2+ offerings, giving the carrier 2.85 million broadband customers at the end of December.

| | | | Re: Dude that sucks. Don't feel sorry for them. I know it will be rough losing a job but they will probably add 10-15 years to their lives. Qwest is a horrible company to work for! I worked for them in AZ for 4 years and it was like working in a sweat shop. | |

I was just hired by Qwest and there are over 30 people in my new hire class as well as about 6 other classes going on at the same time. Of course, all of us work from home instead of in a office so maybe they are closing some offices down? Who Knows.

| | Advertise Those Landlines! Qwest has been paying for some very expensive direct mail print ads around here, promoting how clear and reliable landlines are.
While the points they are making are valid, I'm not sure how effective they will be.

Given the state of the econonmy - Qwest would have been better off pushing a VoIP (cheap) solution with their high speed DSL. They send us ads here too, weekly, saying switch to 7 Mbps or 20 Mbps DSL. Maybe they should know they don't really offer those speeds anywhere near us.
We lose the landline for about 1 week a year, same for DSL.
