Company hints at 20Mbps speeds...
(old news - 10:27AM Tuesday Oct 30 2007)

Like Verizon and AT&T, Qwest's third quarter results indicate that there's a broadband growth slowdown. Unlike AT&T and Verizon, Qwest doesn't own a wireless division, so the slow growth is worrying investors. Also unlike AT&T and Verizon, the company hasn't officially announced their next-generation upgrade plans, though the company hints at faster speeds in their press packet (pdf):
Qwest Broadband subscribers grew by 111,000 in the third quarter supported by transition of dial-up users, new stand-alone broadband customers, and existing Qwest customers adding broadband to their bundle. By investing in increasing the speed of the connection to the home, Qwest is making it possible to provide customers with broadband speeds above 20 megabits per second supporting higher bandwidth applications.
Given that their current residential maximum is 7Mbps DSL (with capped fiber in a limited number of developments), the 20Mbps reference is curious. We recently acquired internal documents and spoke to two company insiders that suggested the company is cooking up a limited ADSL2+ or VDSL launch in major markets. However, the launch, originally slated for August, has been repeatedly delayed.

According to the documents, the company had hoped to serve 8% of Qwest customers with the new service by the end of 2007 and 24% of Qwest's customers by the end of 2008. Denver, Phoenix and Colorado Springs were supposed to be the first three markets launched, with Seattle, Minneapolis, Albuquerque, Portland, Salt Lake City and Des Moines coming later. Some Phoenix forum users have reported that Qwest has been busily laying fiber.

Qwest representatives, however, denied imminent plans of any kind, including VDSL, ADSL2+ or expanded FTTH.

Update: Qwest's CEO subsequently confirmed plans to offer 20Mbps FTTN to 1.5 million customers in their earnings conference call.

now this is funny!

We just moved into a house in Sandy, UT and i called to see if I could actually get the 7meg speed, well guess what I could only get the 1.5! lol This is not a dump of a house or a house located in the middle of a pasture. This house is located in a very nice area.

Qworst is so far behind the times it isn't even funny! I would take dsl over comcast any day of the week, but 1.5 speeds! lmao give me a break. (this neighborhood has been around for around 10 years so it's not like they are new to the neighborhood)

Why in the world would you take DSL "anyday of the week" over a Comcast service like this?

caps, bittorent, latency, pings, etc...

That is why I enjoy dsl. Trust me I love the super fast speeds, but I would rather take a line that is more stable.

huh? caps? 300 gigs a month is too little?
Pings? Your own speed test you posted shows your pings are 35ms. that's AWESOME!

Speeds?...jeesh..your 26,419/1341 test results sure looks like it blows away anything qwest has to offer you..15 times as much in fact!

Not stable? With results like THAT? It looks outstanding to me!

bittorrent? running servers on Comcast and many isp's is againt the TOS.

Not that they block it anyway.

Jeesh ..sounds like you're pretty dang picky with results like all the above. And I'm sure many people would give their right arm for a connection like that!

It looks to me like Qwest would die for the opportunity to be able to offer what you already have with comcast.

Just calling a spade..a spade here.

It has nothing to do with the age of the nieghborhood (unless its _just_ been built).
The neighborhood I'm in is ~35 years old, and I have 1.5-3Mbps.
Newer areas (1-5 years old) had rt's installed and all had 6Mbps, as there's no new CO's being built.

what i am saying is that they are lazy to upgrade neighborhoods even though they are not in the middle of know where.

Re: now this is funny!

They'll assume that you can get 1.5.. you have DSL.
Until they deploy something new (ADSL+, VDSL, etc) with fiber nodes, you won't see any change.

I dumped Qwest yesterday!

I cancelled their so called wireless on Friday.
When i found out it will cost me $400.00 to cancel early i called and had CDV installed to replace my Qwest landline.
It was a with great joy to call Qwest yesterday to say goodbye.

hmmm....

I live in an established neighborhood in Torrance, Ca....the median price is 500k+ (my house 800k +/-, not bragging) and our choices suck....RR for cable (my experience with them is less than stellar).....ATT and Verizon, depending what part of town you live in. I have dsl, because it has been stable, but would like faster download speeds. Can't get FIOS, nor is ATT offering their brand....I guess so called prime neighborhoods is a bunch of hooey....What do we have to do in this country to get decent speeds, and I am willing to pay for it....End of rant

Qwest upgrading in Colo Spgs

Qwest has been busy laying fiber in my neighborhood from what I've been seeing. The cap around here is 1.5 so hopefully they'll upgrade that node to 7 or above.

rates went up

Just got a letter in the mail today saying that they are raising the telephone service $1 for both fixed rate and measured rate plans, as they are not regulated anymore.
