Qwest FTTN: Available To 5 Million By 2010
Should be available to 1.8 million users by year's end...
by Karl Bode Thursday 30-Oct-2008 tags: coverage · wireless · telco · Qwest.net
Qwest recently told us they were ahead of schedule on their $300 million ADSL2+ deployment plan, with their new 12Mbps/896kbps and 20Mbps/896kbps tiers available to 1.5 million customers. That number should reach 1.8 million by the end of this year, and may reach 5 million by the end of 2009, Qwest CEO Ed Mueller told investors this week. Mueller says Qwest could shift spending efforts to help feed FTTN/ADSL2+ deployment, but they won't raise the company’s overall capex budget to do so. Earlier this week, the company announced they'd be cutting 1,200 jobs, as landline losses and a lack of a wireless division continues to dog the baby bell.

Because they're using tired old DSL technology!
God forbid they DIDN'T do something on the cheap.

Re: All talk..

ADSL2+ has a max of 1.4Mbps upload and 24Mbps down.
But you'd have to be within 2,000ft of the DSLAM for that.

Re: 896! lmao!

Because most users do not care about speed.

Most care about cost, services, and customer service. As long as the internet works, then great it is fine for most people. The key is keeping up with what users want. MOST users want to watch videos on CNN or something, that takes a little more. As time goes on need will increase and as long as they keep up with that, there is no problem with competing.

So many people on here (BBR) think that offering 100Mbps to users is going to blow away the competition, not true. If everything else sucks then they will not sell it.

Re: 896! lmao!

I would disagree with you, it isn't 1999 anymore and most people these days who have BB are educated about it. As I said, how can they even compete with Comcast in Denver any more when they are offering upload speeds at 5 1/2x that

Re: 896! lmao!

no a lot off people are still not educated about internet at all.hell i work at 2 different places where we have people that don't even know how to use a computer, much less know about speed.for many of them dialup is still acceptable to them because they don't know any better

not to mention the millions of rural people that still cant get dsl or cable to them 1.5 meg to 3 meg would be a dream.I myself live 1/8 of a mile from dsl,and 1/2 mile from cable, and would just love to have 1,5 or 3 meg at a decent price.i currently use hughes net for 60.00 a month for 1 meg down, and 150kbps up,and a 6 gig download cap.I can get verizon evdo but its 60.00 a month for about 1.5 meg,and a 5 gig cap that's even worse than hughes

so when people say that that tired old dsl tech. is outdated, and will never compete with cable I think you are wrong if dsl was offered to everyone there would be many many rural people that would use it ,and be very happy with it,and could care less about higher speed because they are already used to slow speed internet.I would like to know the exact number of people that can not get dsl or cable because amount here if you are not within 2 1/2 miles from a dslam or the city limits,or on a main road between towns you can not get either

Oh I agree....many in rural areas would use it, but that isn't what we are talking about here. Look, the Qwest speeds are a joke compared to what they are already competing with, and most people who are on BB do know what is up with it. Especially in this day and age, when cost is a big factor ...people want the most for their $ and Qwest with 896 sure isn't delivering that

Re: 896! lmao!

start asking around to dsl and cable users, and you will be surprised as to how many don't even know what speed they have.I know a lot of people that don't even know that, and on top of that are not going to pay more a month for faster speeds when what they have now is fast enough for them

there are a lot more people than you think that don't care about speed just monthly price.people that don't watch videos or movies,or game, and large downloads don't care about super fast internet just one that works and is cheap.I myself don't need any faster than a 6 meg connection, and would not pay more a month for something that i don't need

Sure, agreed, but still that doesn't answer how they can compete with Comcast and their speeds, and the price point is well, pretty much the same. Who wouldn't switch for a connection that is much faster at the same cost?

I'm not sure about up in Denver.

Colorado Springs gets faster upload and download speeds from Qwest than Comcast at a lower price. The connection also is much more reliable. (No matter what I tried on Comcast, I couldn't be bothered playing Xbox Live because I couldn't stay connected through a full game)

Qwest is waiting...

... for at&t or Verizon to buy them out.

If they are not bought out, they will die.... but they will be like a zombie, kept animated and shuffling along by their geographic captive customers and the various USF/un fees they are paid.

They can't even get dial-up to work

ADSL-2? The lines here are so dirty that 14.4K dial-up isn't reliable. 1XRTT through Alltel or satellite is it here.
