Wants to be seen as broadband company -- at 896kbps upstream...
(old news - 09:05AM Thursday May 07 2009)
tags: dsl · competition · business · bandwidth · telco · Qwest.net
According to the Wall Street Journal, Qwest is launching a new public relations campaign aimed at rebranding the company as a more broadband-centric provider. The company, which lost 259,000 residential phone customers last quarter, wants to lessen the emphasis on Qwest the phone company -- through ads highlighting the company's online backup and other broadband-centric services.

Except outside of ad land, Qwest isn't particularly cutting edge. Qwest's "next-gen" ADSL2+ upgrades (when they're available to consumers) offer downstream speeds up to 20Mbps, but upstream speeds limited to a paltry 896kbps. With no wireless phone division to cross-subsidize revenues, next-gen upgrades are limited -- and Qwest is rumored to be considering a sale of their national long distance fiber network.

Pointless

Wouldn't the money wasted on rebranding be better spent on actually making service improvements instead?

Re: Pointless

Rebranding costs less, apparently.

Seriously, when are they going to upgrade my area to ADSL2+? Most of town can't get 7 Mbps speeds and thus are on Comcast. Oh, and they should OVERPRPVISION THEIR FREAKING SERVICE TIERS so people can get the actual speeds they advertise, which isn't the case right now.

Hurry up and get bought by Verizon already, guys...sell off outliers to CenTel/WS and upgrade the more urban networks to FiOS. Seriously, nobody loves you.

Re: Pointless

You could not be more right!
Qwest = FAIL
Comcast = GOOD
FiOS = WIN

I would go for the 50/20 on FiOS if offered....

Re: Pointless

I'd rate Comcast as a solid "Meh". They're DOCSIS 1.1 where I am, so while PowerBoosted downloads are decent, uploads top out (boosted) at under 3 Mbps (2.8 on speed tests) and I have to pay biz prices to get anything more than 8/2. Whe they come out with DOCSIS 3, I'll upgrade their rating to a solid "decent-ish" but not unti then. DOCSIS 1.1 is soooo 2003.

overhead is significant

Keep in mind the overhead for Qwests ADSL2+ is also significant. I can say from personal experience that the 20mbit in reality is closer to 16-17 actual throughput for virtually all users. Contrasted with Comcast where the 16mbit tier is actually provisioned at 17.6mbit and more often than not that's what you got.

Re: overhead is significant

You would need 3mbps upload for the overhead of a 100mbps download.

Pitiful

Just pitiful. I live in a suburb of the Denver area. I could only get 1.5Mb here.

Same thing as it was 10 years ago.

Re: Pitiful

You got that right. 7Mbps across the river. I can see it over there, taunting me. Yet, still at 1.5... for 3+ years... here. I should "borrow" wifi from the neighbors.

Don't expand, rebrand!

Don't expand, rebrand! Nice... I'm still stuck at 1.5M/896k (thank you remote terminals) with no other competitive options. But hey, I'll feel better about it when I see the nice warm and fuzzy commercials knowing that Qwest is truly a broadband company. Meanwhile my brother across town has 20mbps from a cable provider. Thanks Qwest!

USF welfare queen

Qwest must be thinking to become a USF welfare queen waiting for Obama to throw truck fulls of money for "broadband" deployment, fudge the numbers and their existing ADSL network will be paid for by Obama's plan (ignoring it was built a decade before this broadband plan).

Any money from the government would go straight to the few in charge.

Downhill really started with Phil and his railroad buying Qwest. All Phil knows is Phil.

UploadsSpeeds

?, 896kbps is faster than Comcasts upload! From the Concast website.

"Speed comparisons are for downloads only and are compared to 768Kbps DSL and 56Kbps dial-up. Maximum download speed of 4Mbps (or 6 Mbps) and upload speeds of 384Kbps (or 768Kbps) depending on the product that is selected. Increased speeds not yet available in all areas. Actual speeds may vary and are not guaranteed. Many factors affect download speed."

I guess they were using old fine print. The Standard is 6/1 now 12/2 in a lot of places. Still matching or is faster then what Quest is putting out.

next-gen

is NOT *DSL*, it is TRUE FTTH.
Don't forget, you ALSO give up 15% of that paltry 896kbps upload in tired old PPPoE/A overhead!

Re: next-gen

And that's why Qwest is screwed if they keep going down this path. Qwest's primary cable competitor is Comcast. Wherever Qwest drops ADSL2+, Comcast just drops Blast (16/2) on DOCSIS 1.1 to keep Qwest at bay, or upgrades the area to DOCSIS 3.0 and smokes Qwest. Qwest isn't competitive in broadband with Comcast while they're using single-pair ADSL technology, and they have no TV service to speak of.

Their only choice is to run FTTH, otherwise Comcast is just going to whittle them down to nothing over the next few years.

Re: next-gen

"Whittle them down over the next few years"...

Let's forget about trashing old. tired Qwest and focus on Comcast. Their service sucks as bad or worse than Qwest. I have Comcast "Triple Play". Their VoIP phone service is crap. It's like talking into a pringles can. When I loose power (frequently in the SouthEast due to lightning strikes) I loose phone (hardwired handset)service, Calls don't forward to voicemail, etc. Comcast tremendous tech support says "you have a bad modem" BS. Voicemail is in their house. Internet throughput changes dependent upon what my neighbors are doing.
TV reception "tiles" and I completely loose pic for seconds at a time. Oh yea! Comcast is wonderful! NOT!

AT&T Uverse... FTTN, copper to the house. BFD!

Is there a company out there that actually can define customer service and live up to the definition?
