Quantum (20Mbps) and Titanium (12Mbps) tiers in phased roll out...

tags: dsl · business · Qwest.net
Qwest e-mails us to note they've officially launched the new 12Mbps & 20Mbps ADSL2+ tiers we've been talking about since Tuesday. Not much new; we already leaked prices and speeds in our earlier posts, and Qwest isn't divulging precise launch locations. According to a press release that should hit the wires later this morning, the company hopes to have the faster tiers in 23 of Qwest's top markets across 10 states with a "phased roll-out" throughout 2008. Users interested in the tiers need to plug their zipcode into Qwest's website here, and hope the number crunchers at Qwest deemed their neighborhood profitable enough to upgrade.

"Qwest has committed to spend up to $300 million to bring the latest in fiber-optic technology closer to the customer than ever before, and we're ahead of schedule on our goal to make this service available to two million customers by the end of this year," insists Qwest executive vice president Dan Yost.

Yawn...

Hate to say it, but cable already offers those kinds of speeds, and better uploads in some areas, for lower prices.
While I think the 12 Mbit is reasonably-priced, the 20/1 package is an epic FAIL.

And if you can get cable, DISTANCE isn't an issue.

Bring on the speed

I'm happy that Qwest is finally deciding to bring some competition to Phoenix, but the pricing is awful. The difference between 12/1 and 20/1 is absolutely NOT worth another $53. 20/5 and I might think about it.

If nothing else, I hope this prompts Cox to increase cable speeds again.

Cox Premier in AZ

*yawn* is right. This is what they spent $300M on? Cox already offers 15M/1M service for $59.95 with no phone service required to get that price. And, it's pretty much available everywhere they offer Internet in AZ. I bet Qwest's new tiers are only in a few limited areas. From what I can figure out Qwest's price for 12M with no phone line will be $56.99 for the first year and $66.99 after the $10 promo ends. 20M will be $109.99 without a phone line and $119.99 after 1 year.

Don't forget to add around $20 to that price for all the crap fees that are added.

COX NO More

@qwest.net

Depends... I signed up for Cox 3 years ago and was forced to pay $10/month to not have cable TV, or $10 for basic cable. Every time I called them I was told I could not avoid that, right up until a week before I canceled when they had me down for 2 days for maintenance. All night and all day, with uptime in the morning when people are driving to work. They tried to sell me a business line with a guarantee when I said I rely on this to get work done, but they had no answer as to how they could guarantee me out of their maintenance. Now that I canceled, that went ahead and withdrew the $70.58 for the next month even after sending me the final bill showing about $23 in changes. I'm happy to have Qwest after this BS, and even happier to find that within the first 30 days they come out with the 12000/896 service, which went active on my line today. Also, getting the new modem for the cost difference and they are taking the old one back as its in the 30 days I have to return the original no questions.

Fibre feed the RTs first.

Fibre feed the RTs first, so that we can get something faster than 1.5Mbps.

Re: Fibre feed the RTs first.

Uh, that's what this is all about. An RT is the Node part of FTTN (fiber to the node). Qwest is spending $300 Million on this project. However, it is currently only being deployed in their major markets.

Wherefore art thou, AT&T? Gimme more than 6Mbps without signing up for Pewverse.

7Mbps only here

Nothing faster than 7Mbps for 98311

Interestingly enough, if I put my street address into Qwest's tool, they claim I can get 7Mbps. If I put my phone number in, all I can get is 1.5Mbps (which I currently have - 1.5Mb down, 768k up).

Should AT&T get their act together and bring a 3G cell tower to my neighbourhood soon then I'll be tempted to move to that if it's faster as my only other choice is Comcast (with all of their forged RST packets and bittorrent throttling goodness).

If you're fed via RT, all they'll give you is 1536kbps even if you can train up at higher speeds.

I'm fairly certain I am on an RT, when I had my DSL installed I remember the tech saying "You should be able to get 7Mb, not sure why you were only sold 1.5Mbit"

I'm guessing this RT is on a T1 connection, not a DS3 or higher

98027

When I first go to their website and input my zip code (98027 - Issaquah, WA) I'm offered up to 20mbit, however, after I choose the 20mbit service and then input my actual physical address, I'm only offered up to a max of 7mbit.

I guess that means some people in my zip can get 20mbit and others can't (like me). I did have Qwest's 7mbit service once upon a time, but switched back to Comcast's 8mbit service since it had considerably lower ping times which makes a big difference to my Xbox Live! gaming

Re: 98027

No chance of me going to this expensive service. I am soon to get 16/2 with Charter for $59.99. I am unlike many Charter people and get my posted speeds. Currently on 10/1 for a year now it rock solid. No reason to pay more for less.

i called Qwest just now and he told me that i can get 12 and 20M with upload of 896k.
