Qwest this week unveiled a new online storage and backup service dubbed the Qwest Personal Digital Vault. The system, which provides automated or manual backup functionality, provides 2GB of storage for free to all Qwest customers. Customers can also choose to pay for 50GB of storage for $6.99 per month, or unlimited storage for about $9.99. Verizon offered their own storage service last year, with prices ranging from $1.99/month for 1GB -- to $30.99 per month for 50GB. As we recently exclusively learned, Comcast will also soon be offering an online storage service, the tentative plan being to offer 10GB worth of storage for $4.99/mo or $49.99 per year; 50GB for $9.99/mo or $99.99 year; or 200GB for $19.99 a month.

If there's a base level of storage included in the price (it isn't free), then we should be able to deduct the cost of it from our bill if we choose not to use it.

Re: Lame

No way! This is just another of those value add items that you cannot possibly live without. You know, like carrier specific email, Wordpad, ESPN, bank bailouts, and the list goes on....

Re: Lame

I think it is indicative of a trend by companies to artificially inflate the value of their products with no opportunity to customize. It's everywhere now. From text messaging on cellular phones, more programs included in Windows, television programming packages, value meals, etc. You can no longer pick what you want because these companies have found that if you are given your choice, you will exercise it. That means less money for them. So they inflate the prices of individual products and services in a very precise fashion to make the bundle / package / value deal seem like a better deal.

To me, the bigger issue is that this mentality creates a lot of waste. From wasted food, packaging, consumers money, wasted resources to deliver television and other services. Well people are catching on, and that bubble will burst someday.

How is this a good deal?

I just can't understand the pricing on these ISP online storage services. There are already some very good services out there, like Mozy and Carbonite among others, that cost less than $5/month for unlimited storage (for home users). Why on earth would someone pay $31/month for 50GB (Verizon)?? This is not like the skewed pricing between ISP VoIP and indie VoIP, where the ISPs arguably provide a better service worth a higher price. Here, I don't see the value added by the ISP that would justify a higher price. Further, all these ISP services have a "me too" quality that makes me question how well thought out they are, and thus what level of reliability and security users can expect. Yet another attempt by the ISPs to gouge their consumers (I do appreciate the free 2GB from Qwest, but Mozy offers that too).

If Qwest imposes caps, then using those services applies against your caps. But, if you use the quest service, does it apply against the cap?

I don't know about Qwest and Verizon, but Comcast said their backup service would count against the cap.

Brilliant. So, they're offering this service, but you can't afford to use it, even if you want to pay the additional fee for the basic backup service. Seems like a recipe for FAIL.

Re: ...

Actually I think the opposite. A 1TB external drive is still around $120. That's two years' worth of Mozy backup, or BackBlaze, paid per month.

Security-wise the internet backups are much better. THey're encrypted, plus they're offsite...WAY offsite...so in the event that there's something you really need a backup for, you've got it.

On Qwest's 2GB backup option though, I'm not enthused about ISPs offering "free" stuff...gives them the excuse to raise prices and really doesn't provide added value to most customers.

@xspedius.net

would you really trust Comcast to store some data for you?

Honestly, I don't think I would trust Comcast keeping any of my data secure even at a free cost.

you can't upload much due to our capped upload
so your 400gb would take months to upload lol
enjoy leaving you computer on 24hrs a day just to backup something that would take 1-2 days using dvd media and cost? 20 bucks
its a little more work but its cheaper, more reliable and faster in the long run too...
i like faster broadband not useless storage that no one can use except me
useless service for lazy ppl who are not very active...
i backup hundred of dvd a month... of games, tv show, movies, music, video... porn
it takes time, leave more space on my hd but its necessary
470gb per 20 bucks is as cheap as you can go...
HD IMHO are used for temporary storage
Its so unreliable IMHO... I've lost hundred of GB on it due to being lazy to back it up.

I use Mozy for a service like this, $5/month for unlimited storage. You really think that makes me lazy? I call it smart. My data gets backed up offsite EVERY NIGHT, with no intervention by me, in just a few minutes. Yes, the initial upload took days and days, but once that is done, it's effortless after that. You're just creating work for yourself by having to burn DVD after DVD after DVD. What a waste of time and DVD media. And where do you keep all those DVDs? Offsite? More time wasted. At home? Then you're still at risk of losing all your data to theft or fire. You really should re-think your position.

Have you tried restoring your data yet? Try sometimes, when I needed to restore from Mozy it did not work, turnes out that my uploads got corrupted. I stick with verifiable backups from now on. I just rotate my backup HDs offsite. (Take it to family.)

Re: I like it

I did do an actual restore once and it worked fine. I do a test restore every now and then just to confirm that all is well. So far, no problems. I'm shocked to hear about your corruption though, that's terrible. They need to have a mechanism in place to ensure that doesn't happen.

My friend the data you backup are so small even a cd-r would be more then sufficient for you...
Even pocket drive or flash memory card is good enough

I'm a very active person who like to keep busy
so i can backup 50-60 DVD per day
100 per 2 day
so a couple of hundred of DVD a month is nothing
I love my dvd... I would go HD DVD if the cost is twice as cheap as bluray. Reducing my DVD collection by a third...
15gb vs 4.7GB

Mozy can only handle so much data lol
they know that most user don't backup much
but with 100mbit i assure you can jam up their server in less then 24hrs
They are probably running on 250gb,500gb or 1TB at best

They do run out of space

I betcha having to del your stuff on their server because of space problem

unlimited? i'm sure their is but it isn't visible

Better Idea

Sorry $31/mo for something that's worth $5 to buy (1 GB = 10 cents right now)?

Better plan - back up to a 1TB drive external. Take it to a friend's house and set up VPN to it. Do the same for him at your house. Incremental backups won't take so much traffic, and if you're lucky and your house burns down, you just go to the friend's house and do a full install to your new computer, and get his new back up drive to take to your new house.

Sounds good, but people won't do that or use online backups until its too late.
