story category Qwest Offers New $79.99 Bundle Offer
Though only to Iowa and Nebraska residents

Qwest has unveiled a new $80 a month bundle package that includes 7Mbps DSL, DirecTV's "Choice Xtra" TV package, and unlimited and nationwide calling. As Bernie Arnason at Telecompetitor notes, there's a few caveats. Customers must sign a two-year contract, some of the bundle discount involved rebates, HD video content is $10 more per month, there's obviously a lease involved with the DirecTV gear, and you need to pay a $19.95 handling fee. Nudging the price below the fairly standard industry $99 fee is a good sign that Qwest, whose ability to upgrade their network is limited, is seeing increased competition from cable operators. One problem? Many Qwest customers still can't get faster than 1.5Mbps.

Stuck with 1.5 for life.

I was told they will never upgrade my area by my local office. This bundle sounds like a good deal if your able to get 7mbps witch most people outside of a metro cant. Qwest will be in the stone ages in a couple of years with this old copper. Im off to cable as soon as this contract is up SEEYAA.

"Stone ages" is a relative term. If you have nothing better, its Cutting Edge then.

Totally agree.

That is a well written article and very truthful. Off to cable for me, 1.5 with no upgrade ever planned changed my mind.

If the bundle was offered in my area...

...many customers would only get 5 Mbps service, or rather, 4.2 Mbps service with 715 kbps uploads. Qwest's ADSL service is heavily affected by distance and is thus the weakest link in this bundle.

Of course with ADSL2+ probably everyone *can* get 7 Mbps, or rather 6 Mbps down and 715k up after overhead.

Still, an $80 triple play isn't too bad.

So after they add in all the hidden fees and non taxes....

So after they add in all the hidden fees and non taxes it totals out to what? I supposidly pay $12 for phone and $28 for internet (price for life) and my phone bill is $65 a month. It sounds like a goog deal but after they tack in the additional $20 in "fees and non taxes" I doubt this is less than $99 a month.

I wish I knew about this..

I think this is a great promotion. Our last great one was the $14.99 dsl service with in a month just about all the other companies did the same thing. So I'm hoping all our compeditors lower theres to match. As you all mention our lack of HIGH speed internet is a big problem. I've been told, and I've seen we are increasing the speed but as will all things Qwest it takes time to get to everyone. Now I sell our service in the western states so our bundle is $89.99 for the same thing. So to let you know what the additional cost are... you have a install on the home phone this ranges from $16.50 (OR) to $31 (WA) and a $9.99 install for DSL there is also a $9.99/$14.99 charge for the shipping on the modem (standard/wireless). DTV install is $19.95. So A tip every sales person is given a number of $50 rewards cards, and right now you can get a $100 dell gift certificate for setting up service make sure if you do want qwest you ask for these as they are not freely given. Now I feel the same way as alot of you our bundles can be pain and very confusing. So I'm hoping this might help clear up some questions about our current promos.
