As it nudges customers toward Verizon Wireless

Unlike AT&T and Sprint, Qwest doesn't have a wireless division, and so they miss out on cash cows like overly expensive text message revenue, which in turn impacts their ability to upgrade their network and offer competitive bundles. They've tried to counter this by signing partnerships with wireless partners, with mixed results. For a while, Qwest was offering re-branded Sprint wireless phone and EVDO service as "Qwest Wireless" -- albeit with a $5 premium any user could avoid by simply signing up with Sprint directly. Qwest scuttled that partnership in May of 2008, and decided to simply offer Verizon Wireless services. They've now issued a press release reminding customers the original Sprint-based service will be shuttered in sixty days.

Will Qwest/Verizon customer get the normal screwing?

Will Quest subscribers be able to transfer their accounts to Verizon without signing a new contract or will the get the normal screwing like Amp'd Mobile customers. They had to sign new contracts with other wireless carriers and buy new handsets?

I would be pretty angry if I was expecting to go on a month to month service arrangement within a few months and then have to replace my handset and sign a new contract with another carrier.

That would be against the law because it would be a breach of contract. If you sign up for a year, then you only have to be under contract for a year, no company can magically add months. However, what probably will happen is that they will say "want to stick with us? Either sign a new contract and get a new phone or get out." Which then there is plenty of mobile competition .

I suspect anyone that goes to the Verizon Wireless deal will need new handsets. When you switch from Sprint svc to Verizon svc a new handset is needed. So switching from the Qwest/Sprint setup why would that change.

And the way their press release is worded about waiving ETF fees, I suspect that signing up for the Verizon Wireless svc thru Qwest will involve a new 2 yr commitment if you want a subsidized phone. If you use an unsubsidized phone, then you can go on a month-to-month plan.

Re: Will Qwest/Verizon customer get the normal screwing?

I have a friend who switched from Qwest Wireless to Verizon. Qwest actually gives you a bit of a discount on Verizon service ($5-$10 if I remember correctly) so it isn't a bad deal, all told. That said, he did have to sign a contract and he did have to get a new handset.

and what do you think ATT is going to do with they take over Alltel Trust areas that are not going to the ATIN (i think thats the name of the company). You think they're going to keep the CDMA network open for those customers? HA! its a roaming cash cow for VZ and Sprint and thats it.

Those poor customers will be forced into new contracts or be told to get out the same way VZ did with Cellular One MidWest when they took over that network back in '01.

Roaming agreements are required to be kept for four years from the date of the switchoer, so competitors have time to regroup...

So? They can't be forced into switching carriers. It's their choice to move to a different carrier whichever carrier that may be. Yes, if they move they will either need to sign a new contract with that carrier, go pre-paid, or go with one of the pay upfront monthly plans. Don't expect much in the way of discounts or savings unless you agree to commit (contract).

Re: Will Qwest/Verizon customer get the normal screwing?

that was the whole point someone else was saying if you would have taken the time to read. They were talking about the people already in contracts with Qwest Wireless.

I was only saying about VZW when they took over Cellular One MidWest. But like i said, you didn't bother to read what I had to say.

I'll bet if you bring your old handset to a Sprint Store, they will transfer you over as a Sprint direct account without a new term commitment. A new contract would be involved if you purchase a new handset.

qwest will be sold off and broken up in the next few years. those guys cant do anything right. they tried to sell off their long haul network but was asking for too much money. their landline and dsl business is dying fast.

Re: bye bye

i was just being silly, i still have qwest wireless or whatever and im glad they are stopping it, i just wish they would do it NOW instead of waiting

also in their thingy it says no ETFs, do they mean no ETFs starting now? or when they stop it, i dont see why they would say no ETFs if their stopping it right?

ETF

To my understanding, Qwest is no longer charging an ETF for the people still under "Qwest Wireless". If you are still using the Sprint service & if you want to resign with Verizon then you would have to sign a new contract.

Qwest to Verizon Wireless

Done it a few months ago, and don't look back at the "Sprint" powered coverage provided, either. But I also had a very cheap plan grandfathered, now gone. What I miss the most is their "Everywhere Line" which automatically switched my landline to the cell whenever I turned it on. I have to go through the "Update Center" & do it manually EVERY darn time. & if I forget to clear in when I get home, I find out later.......
