Still skittish about getting into IPTV
(old news - 09:34AM Tuesday Jan 08 2008)
tags: dsl · business · bandwidth · telco · Qwest.net
Qwest will be spending $300 million over the next two years to bring 20Mbps VDSL to around 1.5 million customers. The company says they spent $70-100 million on the project in 2007, and will spend another $200 million this year. Qwest hopes to see a FTTN/VDSL penetration rate of 40% by 2010, and the upgrades are going to cost the company around $175 per home. The Rocky Mountain News says that Qwest is also testing line bonding:
The technology could enable the Denver telco to provide data speeds of up to 35 to 38 megabits a second. Currently, the company's fastest advertised rates are 7 megabits a second. It's too early to say whether Qwest will ever go to a bonded DSL line platform. But if the technology proves to be commercially viable, it could be an option for providing video on demand.
Of course that has also been AT&T's hope, and the industry (with Qwest in the front row) is watching to see whether AT&T can really provide multiple HD streams over copper without really compromising image quality. Qwest so far hasn't been keen to jump with both feet into the IPTV market, and unless U-Verse is a smashing success, it's likely to stay that way.

ADSL2+

Actually most of the new efforts seem to be concentrated on ADSL2+ rather than VDSL.

Re: ADSL2+

ADSL2+ only hits 24mbps...I can assure you that companies worldwide are currently using VDSL.

...... Talk is CHEAP

Att Uverse was nothing to celebrate. So what, I think they give people 7mbit? I got that using cable. Hell, cable offers 15mbit here. These companies pretend like we're stupid. A big marketing campaign and loads of fanfare to get crap that is available in other parts. Big Whoop. Not to mention, they act like what they're doing is some sort of new revolutionary technology. Humm, NOT EVEN CLOSE. When these companies start offering symmetrical fiber, give the story front page. Until then, it's the same watered down crap over and over again. Who cares if they toss in another few mbits on top of what they offer. The upload will still stand at 512-2mbits which just sucks. End of story.

Re: ...... Talk is CHEAP

Amen- A lot of talk and no real action from these players. All I ever hear is this company or that company is going to offer such and such but I've yet to see it in my part of the world (or anything close) The Telcos and cable boys are going to milk the current customer base for as much as possible before they spend a dime to really upgrade their offerings.

Yep, they wont risk losing their small business T-1 revenues.
With U-VERSE they get to upgrade and not risk losing that cash cow.
ADSL2+ was standard in what 2003-04? All they are doing is making more automated milking machines.

Where was ADSL 2 standard? Yes available but not widely. It is now becoming more so.
The business level T1 etc. have SLA that DSL does not have. That is a chunk of the extra cost. If the circuit goes down a tech will respond asap.

Bonded to 3 Mbps, yeah!

They will soon give us bonded 1.5 Mbps to 3 Mbps now, what a leap.

If your talking about T1's, then its already being done. At work we 'load balance' 3 T1's and our ISP does it on their end also to us. Works perfectly.

Nope, 1.5 Mbps is what they limit 99% of us that use remote DLAMS, who are not connected directly to the CO.

How About Upgrading Rural Remotes?

I'd be happy if I could get something more than 1.5/768...

Re: How About Upgrading Rural Remotes?

What would be instering would be sort of a Uverse Wimax Hybrid system. That is if Wimax lives up to its hype but I doubt it would happen.

Re: Novel idea

With a new build out i'm surprised they don't. I know they have a huge debit load. But why spend money rebuilding a network using DSL when you can do it right the first time with fiber.

VDSL vs. Cable

Years and years ago, I sold cable (don't remember if it was AT&T Broadband or Comcast at that point time) in Highlands Ranch, CO. Quest had run FTTN and VDSL in some select new build neighborhoods there. It was hard as hell to sell cable against it. I'd be willing to bet that Quest has their best penetration in those neighborhoods to this day.

Edit: I forgot to mention that these neighborhoods were heavily populated by Qwest management.
