Telco offers fiber near muni-deployment
(old news - 03:35PM Monday Jan 23 2006)
tags: Fiber · competition · municipal
When you think of broadband hotspots, Utah might not come to mind: but it should. Utopia is the nation's largest wholesale municipal broadband deployment, eventually connecting 14 cities with fiber triple play service. In one area, users can receive 15Mbps symmetrical fiber connections for $40. That's caused local incumbents to sweat; Qwest has been filing lawsuits, and Comcast has done something we rarely see: lowered prices.

Light Reading reports that traditionally sluggish telco Qwest has sped up fiber deployment, running fiber to 13,500 new homes in the Salt Lake City suburb of South Jordan, offering 5Mbps broadband and IPTV services to some customers. The folks from Utopia actually offered Qwest to share their network, but say they never heard back from the telco. "The invitation is still open," says a Utopia rep.

Didn't you know!

The problem is the consumers! They are a pack of lying, stealing communists! Voting to fund a muni broadband deployment that's taking food from childrens mouths! This kind of un-american activity must be supressed at all costs, cause what if other cities/towns came up with the same idea! Why, we could have 100mb symetrical internet access EVERYWHERE!

Here's just a small taste of the future!

Venkman: This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
Mayor: What do you mean, biblical?
Ray: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor... real Wrath-of-God-type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies.
Venkman: Rivers and seas boiling!
Egon: 40 years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanos.
Winston:The dead rising from the grave!
Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats, living together... mass hysteria!

It's GOT TO STOP! GOD (well, at least the neo-con leader Pat Robinson tells us) WILL PUNISH THEM!

I keep reading about the muni attempts here in Indiana, but I'm sure they will be squashed way before we get anything. Let alone 15 meg in both directions.

(sigh)

It seems the consumers aren't as enamored of the Utopia network as you are.
The UTOPIA fiber network is still in the process of laying fiber in its 14 communities, and so far fewer than 2,000 are now receiving services. Most of those are customers of MStar, right now the primary service provider using UTOPIA’s wholesale network.
Instead of battle-planning for the RBOCs and sharing best practices, city managers and network equipment vendors here were addressing a more fundamental problem: How do you convince a bunch of folks in the middle of Utah that they need 100 Mbit/s going to their homes?

But even here at municipal broadband heaven, most of the 450,000 consumers passed by the Utah Telecommunication Open Infrastructure Agency (UTOPIA) network’s fiber are not yet clamoring to get hooked up.

That quote is pretty misleading.

The whole thing says:

quote:
But even here at municipal broadband heaven, most of the 450,000 consumers passed by the Utah Telecommunication Open Infrastructure Agency (UTOPIA) network’s fiber are not yet clamoring to get hooked up. Out of the 5,000 to 8,000 Gould says are currently reached by UTOPIA's network, only around 500 have signed up.
They are currently just under 2000 customers according to your first quote. A 25% takeup rate at this early stage is pretty good IMO.

Yeah what a rip off!

10/10 for $39.95 ?

I'm much better off with my 5/.25 for $42.95

Oh wait...

@alphagraphics.com
AT&T/SBC offers 8up/down for 35 and 15up/down for 40

@cable.rogers
MSTAR's info is outdated. They offer 15/15.

Re: XMission, not Mstar offering 15mbps

I can verify MSTAR's information is incorrect. The transport provider, UTOPIA, configures residential access portals at 15/15, MSTAR's included. (As a note, I've found the actual upload speed is often in excess of 15mb - 16.9 a few minutes ago; I've seen as high as 21Mbs).

OOD

Take-rates have been surprisingly high in UTOPIA enabled areas. I believe the numbers in that lightreading article come from months old data.

XMission has been offering data service over UTOPIA for about six months now. Other service providers have been live for some time as well. The article is simply incorrect on that point.

The only real stumbling block in UTOPIA subscriptions were some early network problems that have since been resolved. I can tell you that we have hundreds of happy subscribers... and that I'm seriously thinking about selling my home in Sandy and buying one in Murray or Midvale.

Here is some actual data for muni projects including UPTOPIA

If you want to debate this topic i think its time for everyone to look at the numbers and see the reality of each project....whether bad or good.

Its long but I know most of you who care have the time...for the ADD they have graciously added cliff notes.

enjoy the truth!

An excellent analysis. Thanks for posting.

And if you don't want to read all 211 pages, then read the Executive Summary running from pages 9 thru 13.

I've saved this to disk and will use for reference material in future muni vs private discussions.

Hmm. From the actual document.. "By way of disclosure, the funding for this study has come from industry"

Lets see now, why does this sound a lot like certain senators and representatives in congress? Ahh! Yes.. Buying the answers you want!

It's an astroturfing job.. Balhoff and Rowe are prime mouthpieces for cable/telco companies. Their data and the results, are about as accurate as south korean cloning scientists, just not as smart.

Re: The Real Scoop

Good job summarily dismissing the article without even reading it. The data is taken directly from the muni's via public record. You dont have to agree with the opinions but you cant argue data from the source. Take the conspiracy hat off for a minute and try to get deeper than than the first paragraph.

Re: The Real Scoop

Did you actually RESEARCH the company that did the report? Have you read ANY of their other reports? Did you actually look to see who paid them to make this 'big and expensive' report. Lets just say, it wasn't a neutral 3rd party.

They are PAID FOR BY telco and cable companies. If that's not 'professional astroturfing', I don't know what is.

Only the weak minded, (usually those who support 'intelligent design' and the like) are fooled by these industry produced reports, and often quote them as gospel. The reality of the matter is that it's easier for Quest to spend 1 Million dollars to have a professional astrotufer write a big report, then pay their 'ahem' DSL report astroturfers to spread the word even more, than it is from them to compete in the real world. Remember, if quest is 'better', then hey, everyone will use them. Competition is just, plain, wrong according to the telco's/cableco's.

Yes...Yes...Yes did all of those, they actually made question 3 easy to find as you so promptly quoted.

I never said the information was 100% accurate or that I agree with the summaries. I was simply pointing to one of the only documents, to date, that has used actual muni provided data for a research report. Point to one which says something different with a different opinion and I will gladly read that too. Then I will weigh what it claims to be the truth against my own judgement and experience, like you should do when getting any information. But to dismiss it outright without reading it is ___________.
