'The geeks call it channel bonding,' proclaims carrier...

RCN users write in to tell us that the latest RCN newsletter indicates that the cable overbuilder will soon be deploying DOCSIS 3.0 technology and faster speeds. In the newsletter, the cable operator suggests that new speeds up to 60Mbps are looming, but doesn't note full speed or pricing details. "The geeks call it 'channel bonding' but all you need to know is that it will triple our speeds up to 60Mbps," says the company. The company said back in March they were testing the faster speeds in New York and Boston, but CEO Peter Aquino seemed to downplay the faster speeds, saying less than 20% took the company's fastest 20Mbps service.

@comcast.net

less than 20% took the company's fastest 20Mbps service

Which is why these announcements are aimed primarily at the stock market and not actual customers.

Investors and banks loan the money which makes these upgrades possible...

...and a poor rating by stock analysts can cause a downgrade in credit rating which can increase interest rates on the multi-BILLION dollar loans all these cable companies have...

No loans, no upgrades. High interest rates and the companies fold under the debt maintenance costs. See Charter cable for an example.

tw vs rcn

Lets see who will have DOCSIS 3 out faster, TW or RCN.

RCN had their 20 mbps plan when TW only had 8 mbps as the max.

not a big job

Keep in mind that RCN's footprint in TOTAL is probably no bigger than the state of Vermont as a whole.. so that is no big job for even FTTP, let alone docsis upgrades compared with the top 5 cable & telco companies.

Let us see something new such as a $60 price tag per month UNLIMITED for 60mbits down 60mbits up. Otherwise, it's just another blip on the path to next generation broadband at affordable (non early adopter) rates.

too expensive

So DOCSIS 3.0 rollouts are increasing. Big whoop. Who's going to pony up the hideously high prices that we've been seeing so far, when the lower tiers are WAY more than adequate for the average user? VERY few people, that's who. Eventually they'll have to bring the premium down for the faster service. Why the ISP's don't just do this in the first place and shoot for a higher adoption rate is beyond me.

Cox offers it here in Arizona as of recently. I have a Moto SB6120, which I bought before it was officially supported. A few months later, suddenly my downstream channels were bonded, though my speed was virtually the same (about 24 mpbs, on their mid-priced tier). I just don't see many people ponying up for the huge cost for the highest speed tiers.

Re: too expensive

In a triple play bundle for Comcast, I only pay a $50/month premium for 50/10. Not horrible really. Actual cost-wise it comes out to about $75.00.

Prices

I sure as hell their higher tiers aren't a rip off. I'm tired of paying $80/month for 20/2.

nature of market

as it stands, 8-20mbits costs about $30-70, cheaper when bundled... more expensive when stand-alone or on a dedicated FTTP network or in a footprint that's NOT competitive. we hope for there to be some head-to-head competition within docsis 3 footprints at the higher speeds, pushing down ALL prices soon.
