RCN Metro Optical Networks, a provider of fiber optic-based network solutions, reportedly announced upgrades to the access layer of its Ethernet network to include 10 Gigabit Metro Ethernet-based transport at several key locations.
The upgrade, driven by the demand for increased bandwidth, will provide RCN (News - Alert) Metro customers with greater scalability, reducing the amount of time needed to increase bandwidth to mere days resulting in enhanced network performance.
The new network will eliminate unnecessary propagation, resulting in reduced CPU cycles in the transfer of data from the access layer to the existing 10 Gigabit distribution and core layers. This reduction translates into enhanced network performance and data transport speeds, as well as an overall decrease in network latency, officials said.
While competitors may offer 10 Gigabit service at the access layer, theyre still delivering it via costly DWDM or SONET technologies, said Felipe Alvarez (News - Alert), president of RCN Metro, in a statement. With this latest upgrade, RCN Metro is pioneering the delivery of 10 Gigabit Metro Ethernet at the access layer.
RCN Metro has already upgraded six key locations from 1 Gigabit to 10 Gigabit. The company also plans to upgrade a number of additional locations in its footprint by the end of the year.
