RCN Preps DOCSIS 3.0 Launches New York, Lehigh Valley, Boston Speaking to reporters and analysts during the company's 3rd quarter earnings conference call, cable overbuilder RCN has announced that they're taking their DOCSIS 3.0 plans out of neutral very, very soon. According to the company, residential customers in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, Boston and New York should see faster speeds before the end of the year. The company says the "majority" of their remaining footprint will see the faster speeds in 2010. There's no word on residential pricing yet. As their press release attests, RCN is going to make small business customers their primary marketing focus at first.

| Wonder what Comcast/TWC will do Comcast beats RCN in top speed offered anywhere (100/15) but 60/10 for $200 isn't a bad price, especially compared with TWC's lousy business class pricing.
It'll also be nice for businesses to get 20/5 internet at a reasonable price, which $60 per month DEFINITELY is. That's cheaper than the residential price for Comcast 22/5... | |

| Re: DC If it's a "not enough bandwidth to the node" problem you're still scr4ewed with D3, but if there are too many folks on a channel to deliver 20/2 service then this will fix that. Bond two channels on the downlink and 20/5 becomes no problem. Bond three channels and 40/5 is a walk in the park. Bond four channels and 60/10 is using less than one-third of the available bandwidth when maxed out. So capacity-wise 60/10 with four channels would be like a 15 Mbps tier on a single channel, except even less congested because bigger pipes are harder to saturate than multiple smaller ones. | |
