RCN Starts DOCSIS 3.0 Deployment
New York City and Boston to soon see faster speeds...
by Karl Bode Tuesday 10-Feb-2009 tags: business · cable · RCN CABLE
Cable overbuilder RCN says they're starting to deploy DOCSIS 3.0 technology in their New York City and Boston markets. They aren't offering any details on speeds and prices as of yet, though they say they'll offer speeds of 50Mbps "and faster." RCN CEO Peter Aquino tells Light Reading that the carrier is "taking the time now to test the platform to ensure that when we fully deploy this upgrade it is done in the most efficient and effective manner for our customers." RCN competes with Comcast in Boston and Time Warner Cable in New York City. RCN also serves portions of Chicago, Washington, DC, and Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.

Good for those customers...

RCN has been the best wired broadband provider I've had to deal with by far... and that's across the country and many different providers--MediaOne, AT&T Broadband, Comcast, Verizon DSL, Speakeasy DSL, Qwest, TimeWarner Road Runner, etc...

Well south of the Charles, people in our area have fled RCN as quickly as possible: lots of disconnects, bad service etc. The article should note that in most of the Boston metrowest area, RCN also competes with Verizon Fios as well as Comcast. We have the choice of all three in our city, e.g..

For years before, RCN kept the local incumbent cable co in check to prevent too outrageous behavior.

I wonder what upload

I wonder what upload they'll be offering? I had them from 2002-2004 and they were offering 5/800 and later 8/1 which was pretty good for that era.

And Time Warner Cable

@optonline.net

why?

why bother with do docsis 3. any customer can get good speeds since they have no customers on their network so no bandwith sharing......

no bandwidth

@rcn.com

Re: why?

Speed seems to be an issue across most markets

»[Speed] Chicago... Issues

and here

»[Connectivity] RCN D.C. very slow internet?

and here

»[Speed] New York, NY (Manhattan) -- Slow Uploads & Pings

and in my neck of the woods

»[Connectivity] HORRIBLE speeds at night - Boston, MA 10-2008

RCN couldn't bring on DOCSIS 3 soon enough.

bottleneck

rcn bottleneck is from there network to the public internet. if you do speedtest to rcn site it is fast. if you test speakeasy or anywhere its slow.even if they give me 100megabits to my home that speed it my home to their headend. then from their headend to the net is prolly like 100megabits shared among 100000 user.
