RCN To Offer TiVO
Sometime in 2010, no price set yet...

Users in our RCN forum note that the cable overbuilder has decided to use TiVO digital video recorders in the field. According to RCN, this won't be a software update pushed to existing devices, but an entirely new unit. The company says the launch is planned for early 2010, but so far a monthly price tag for the service or device hasn't been finalized. At one point a few years ago it wasn't clear that TiVO would survive as a brand -- but the company has since struck a number of major deals with cable operators such as Cox and Comcast. In RCN's case, TiVO will be their primary product and won't play second fiddle to other DVRs, something that seems to have plagued Comcast's limited deployment of the technology.

Yeah, they're using late-model Motorola DVRs running Passport Echo Guide software.

Tivo on Comcast ??? Where is that?

Tivo may have a deal with Comcast, but it must be the slowest rollout in history. The Tivo DVR option appears almost nowhere on Comcast. They rolled it out in a few places and then apparently lost interest. »www.lightreading.com/document.as···ng_gnews
Comcast offers a version of TiVo ported to Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) digital set-tops, but deployment has been limited to its Boston and New England markets.
I hope RCN does a better job.

Yeah I find that interesting as well. Wonder if Comcast's just concerned about cannibalizing preferred box sales, or if there's a technical glitch?

Be grateful. Our Comcast system is running that horrid SARA software.

Will you be able to buy a tivo and use VOD and SDV or will you be forced to rent a box from RCN?

will the rcn box be cut down from what a real tivo has?

No, you have to use RCN's Tivo to get VOD. Nothing is changing for existing Tivos. RCN is making a new Tivo box (well, same HD Box, but slightly different software) that you have to rent through them.

5 years from now

give credit to rcn for a bold move like this but will tivo be around 5 years from now to support these boxes? i imagine there will be tons of bugs when the service launches as rcn had when they put aptiv on their cable boxes. good luck!
