Amazon joins in
(old news - 09:25PM Thursday Mar 04 2004)
This week will probably be remembered as the first time RSS made it out of Blog/Geek pages and into the mainstream press. A few days ago this Associated Press article was widely carried by major newspapers. It asked us to remember the day we first saw a URL on a billboard, and suggested the orange RSS symbol may soon be ingrained as » is. Today, Amazon brought out its "syndicated content" list of RSS feeds that were previously hidden away for Amazon partners and outside developers, hoping, presumably, to turbo-charge its affiliate channel as web monkeys find ways to use their endless streams of top 10 product lists.

Now you too can wake up each day to check the top 10 selling kitchen products.

So, if it is springtime 2004 for RSS, better go download yourself an RSS reader! There are a bunch of them, which one do you use, and why? (being lazy, I'd rather just bookmark dailyrotation.com).

Yippe! I guess

RSS seemed like to much trouble for nothing to me. I guess I don't have enough interest in having 50 feeds delivered to me everyday. Who needs it. I find the info I need just fine now.

Re: Yippe! I guess

I felt the same was as you, but a guy at work installed an RSS reader on my PC and it truthfully has been ok. It nice to look in one place at the articles that I would normally had visited 1/2 dozen seperate web sites for.

It seems I spend less time looking at the quick little summaries than I did when I scanned through the larger articles.

I know what you mean. I used to go to around 15 deal sites a day. That got pretty tiring, so I usually unded up going to my 3-4 favorite ones regularly.

Now that I found dealsites, I only need to go to one site.

setting up an rss reader is pretty simple. there are countless programs out there where you just enter the url and it will do all the rest.

i think it's great, especially for on-the-go. me as a webmaster, i just recently started to allow my visitors the ability to filter what content they want.. different catgories, how much content they want, etc..

THiS JUST IN!

Yawn.
I ignored it when microsoft introduced "active desktop" and "channels". I'll ignore it again, now that it's called something else. Why am I even typing this? Time to go check some news sites.

Re: THiS JUST IN!

I gotta say -- using an RSS reader is great to keep up on the news and cool tech stuff. It's worth it to check out -- SharpReader (www.sharpreader.net) is what I use (free), and it's a lot better than going to multiple websites to check the headlines. The headlines show up in the aggregator, and you can scan through them for the ones you want to read. Try it, you'll like it (and all of your friends are doing it..

RSS rawks!

Here are two uses for RSS; both of which come in handy. I have a plug-in for Trillian that I've set up to read some RSS feeds from the forums here(BBR). I also use it on my clans website (»bbwolfcorps.com ).

Google News

I just go to google news for my quick news. Other news sites require log-ins and many of them have too much elements (huge menus, too much graphics, advertisements) for a fast viewing and news comsumption. Heck, I might try RSS reader right now.

Reader?

What's the patch that you use for Trillian?

And does anyone know if there is a reader that shows like a tickertape, that I could import in to HTML? (active desktop)

RSS-XML for Linux/apache

Since I came across this I have been scouring the web for an easy way to have apache serve xml feeds that I receive.

I found Amphetadesk but not much more and seems like alot of work involved.

Anyone else doing this with apache have a recommendation?

Heh

I'm with the editors. Daily Rotation beats all the desktop readers and website news aggregators. You can be very lazy and very well informed. No login needed, no registration, very very easy configuration, and it just gathers all the tech news you'll ever want. You can spend hours reading what it offers on just one page.

Bloglines

Bloglines isn't bad for on-the-go news without having to download a reader.
