If you already have a corporate presence, you likely also have a "Contact Us" page on it. So, overall, unless you're trying to sell domains in this TLD, it seems rather pointless. -- The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. -- Bertrand Russell

kapilThe Kapil join:2000-04-26 Chicago, IL | WTF? At first I thought it was actually sort of a hosted dns product coupled with a new TLD. So, yourcompany.tel could be queried for records similar to SRV or TXT DNS records to pull out info like phone, website, fax etc.
This would have been mildly useful if it became a standard...but we already have e.164 for that.
This is much more useless than what I was hoping for. It's just another TLD...and god knows we have enough to the point where it's now getting silly. I think we crossed that line when .museum and .aero were approved.
...and along with the TLD you get a simple website where you can list your contact info for others to find.
They seem to have glossed over the fact that people can do that on their "regular" websites using any other TLD.
What really cracks me up is their demo where they show a business listing their web address on their .tel site so "customers can easily find your website". If customers can find your .tel site...why can't they find your .com or .cn or whatever?

Aside from large corporations reserving names to prevent trademark squatters, this is pretty useless for just about everyone.
ICANN should stop with this non-sense. -- »www.Digium.com

jig join:2001-01-05 Hacienda Heights, CA | seems ok this is what it is: if your contacts are in the "cloud", then when you update your home address/whatever as time passes, everyone who has linked to that .tel address will automatically get the update. if it's built into cell phones, they'll never have to update their number for you (barring some glitch).
good - you don't have to do much when you move/change phone numbers/get married.
bad - once someone gets that link to you, i don't see a way to exclude them from the updates - hello life-long stalking.
good for businesses and people who don't make enemies (and people whose friends don't share their contact info haphazardly). -- Catapultam habeo. Nisi pecuniam omnem mihi dabis, ad caput tuum saxum immane mittam.
