Report: Amazon Eyes Ad-Based Internet Streaming Service
Anonymous sources tell the New York Post that Amazon is planning a new, ad-supported streaming video platform. This service would be separate from Amazon's existing $99 yearly Amazon Prime video service, featuring both ads and a subscription price lower than Netflix's current offering. "The main point is to bring in more users that you can eventually up-sell to Prime, or to get to a broader audience that doesn't want to pay for Prime, in order to increase their video share," the source claims. A recent Sandvine study showed that Amazon was making small strides, its share of peak hour traffic recently jumping from 1.61 percent to 2.58 percent (though keep in mind Netflix has a 32.39 percent share).

If i'm getting ads. . . . .

it had better be FREE!!1

if netflix can offer ad free for $8/mo, ads can pay for this.

Re: If i'm getting ads. . . . .

$8 a month for Netflix seems to be $96 a year, Amazon Prime is $99. The price of Amazon Prime and Netflix seem similar, does Netflix offer more content than Amazon? If this new Amazon product is offering the same content as Amazon Prime, but with ads, you are absolutely correct, it better be for free. We will pay enough with ads.

High licensing fees seem to be what is holding Hulu Plus back. If it wasn't for the high licensing fees of next-day episodes they wouldn't need ads in Hulu Plus. Though I am seeing less ads in Hulu Plus than the Free version.

This doesn't make any sense unless it's free.

If this service is free, I could see people using it but if you have to pay for streaming service it defeats the purpose.

Amazon Prime at $99/yr is already cheaper than Netflix and you get many more benefits compared to Netflix. You currently pay around $8.33/mo for Amazon Prime which includes your streaming service so I'm not quite sure what the point of this would be.

Agree. I have both Netflix and Prime. My prime subscription is more than paid for by the free Amazon shipping. So, it's basically free without ads if you shop Amazon a bit.

Same here. We were Prime members before streaming was a part of the offering. It's now just gravy/icing/cherry on top.

Re: Even if it is free

Wait... you're saying that even if it's free you still wouldn't use it? Seriously? WHY!?!? They would be giving you the content you want, in the form you want, at a price you want. What more could you want?

There not the only one, I could name 5-10 others that think the same way. Some that think (after talking to them) thinks/thought someone owed them something.

Exactly. If it has ads, even if it's free, I would not watch it.

I'd rather not have to deal with a massive lawsuit and a DMCA notice. If I'm going to get my content I'm going to do it legally.

Lawsuit? You fail at filesharing if you do it in a way that can result in a lawsuit.

I pay for it from services like Netflix. After getting used to watching ad-free streaming, the commercial interruptions have become intolerable.

Amazon Streaming Service

If its free and has the content I want, I will watch it. But even if its free it would be no big deal since YouTube is free and Hulu has some free content. So if more people come out with free streaming services, good for them, I'll ad them to my list and watch them if they have interesting stuff and I have free time.
