Republicans Aim to Defund NSA Surveillance

A group of Conservatives, led by Libertarian-leaning Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), are pushing to have NSA surveillance funding pulled unless the agency reins in some of its aggressive wholesale spying on Americans. The Amendment puts the group of politicians on a collision course with House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio.), who has repeatedly publicly supported the NSA domestic spying program.

The Amendment "ends authority for the blanket collection of records under the Patriot Act" and "bars the NSA and other agencies from using Section 215 of the Patriot Act to collect records, including telephone call records, that pertain to persons who are not subject to an investigation under Section 215." The NSA has apparently taken the threat of the Amendment seriously enough to schedule a private emergency meeting to try and scuttle it.

Meanwhile, all of the negative press attention hasn't swayed government one bit so far, with Office of the Director of Foreign Intelligence publicly announcing (something that traditionally does not happen) that the Office would be renewing the NSA's authority to spy on Americans for another ninety days.

"In light of the significant and continuing public interest in the telephony metadata collection program, the DNI (Director of National Intelligence) has decided to declassify and disclose publicly that the government filed an application with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court seeking renewal of the authority to collect telephony metadata in bulk, and that the court renewed that authority," said the announcement.

The Obama administration is meanwhile working hard on the framework of their legal defense against the growing number of lawsuits challenging the domestic surveillance program's legality.

..."We're not opposed to spying on THEM, as long as you don't spy on us"

Finally! some legistslation everyone UP FOR RE-ELECTION (and that always vote NO! (all 15 times this year) will be able to support )or oppose or both depending on the angle of the sun)

Back to important news like the royal baby.

Already called my representative's office and told them to support this amendment. Sent email as well, but calling is better.

We'll see.

Republicans Aim to Defund NSA Surveillance by Karl Bode 52 m

Does anyone really believe that words placed on a sheet of paper will change how the government operates? When new legislation is passed that contains supposed limitations on how they are permitted to collect and store data, nothing will change because the government does not follow the Constitution and the current laws now. If they disband the NSA then congress will simply create a new alphabet soup organization that will immediately perform the former functions of the NSA . The citizens of this great country must become wise to the tactics of deception and no longer tolerate the tyrannical action of a small corrupted group.

No, words on a piece of paper will not change how people *in* our goeverment operate. Didn't prevent Obama from disregarding current immigration laws, Holder from covering up his agencies "errors in judgement", etc, etc.

History? What history?
Has anyone really kept track of things going on in the last 20 years?

I think they should be allowed to spy all they want

After their budget gets trimmed to oh say.... $4.99.

Hey ya know NSA, it's been a tough year... what with the economy in a shambles and people unemployed and hungry in the streets... It's all we can AFFORD. Maybe next year we'll be able to bump it up to $6.99 if things get better...

If it ever got to that point all it would take is another big terrorist attack to get the money flowing again.
And unfortunately that would be very likely as well if their budget got cut like that.

If you honestly believe that the NSA has done ONE solitary thing to prevent a terrorist attack, PLEASE come up to New York and bring cash. I have some GREAT deals on some bridges for you.

Whether you trim their budget to $4.99 or boost it to 10X its current value, another big terrorist attack is not only likely but almost certain.

It's okay Karl, you can say it:

It's not just Republicans -- it's the Tea Party guys trying to nip the NSA in the bud. Why, those crazy loons....

Unfortunately...

Unfortunately, and I hate to be cynical, but I doubt this'll go anywhere.

For one thing a great many politicians (of both parties) support the NSA programs whether because they really believe they're effective, think we're dumb enough to buy that line, or because they're threatened directly or indirectly. If, and I stress if, the public demands a cut in funding it'll just go underground.

Funding for any gummint department rarely decreases although it may flow another way. That's why gummint always increases in size. It's only the rate of increase that varies.

Re: Unfortunately...

All it will take is one terrorist attack, and anyone who even was perceived as trying to affect the NSA will probably lose re-election for the guise of being "easy on terrorism". This will go absolutely no where. They will put on a horse and pony show, and operations will continue at the NSA, business as usual.

Waste pf time and just moves the wookie.

It would be better if they removed the warrant-less wiretapping/eavesdropping/etc/etc privileges on US citizens from the NSA, FBI, CIA and other three or four letter agencies/departments/etc.

NSA Defunding Sponsors

Do you have a web site with a list of sponsors and co-sponsors? I know that several of my folks, liberal Democrats, both in the Senate and the House (like Wyden, Conyers and so on), are also implacably opposed to this spying and have been joining up with the conservative libertarians to fight this nonsense. So I'd be curious if there are any House Democrats who are doing the right thing and have signed on to this. Thanks!

Call off the dogs

Since the only terrorists who will now use e-mail, cell phones, or land lines are the stupid ones who are more apt to blow themselves up than to harm anyone else, while the smart terrorists will use dead-drops, flash paper, and meetings in person to co-ordinate their plans, isn't it time to simply stop monitoring everyone? It would save a LOT of money -- not to mention be keeping in line with that funny thing you had - that thing call a Constitution.

A new set of shiny books

Funding like this will just get tunneled from elsewhere under certain "No you may not speak of this" orders (if even informed).
It's a free look what we stood up too. Then one day the truth (maybe) comes out that pollies were powerless to stop them.
Worth a vote= NO.
