Roadrunner Scraps Video MailShut down due to 'Modest demand' ( old news - 06:29PM Thursday Jan 03 2008) tags: Video · business · cable · bundles · content · RoadRunner CableBBR reader and Time Warner Cable customer Matthew Evans writes in to note that Time Warner Cable/Roadrunner is scrapping their video mail service. Launched back in 2004, the service used software from Vibe Solutions Group to simplify the process of recording and sending video snippets. However, a Time Warner Cable e-mail to customers says the service is being scrapped due to "modest demand": Due to modest demand, Road Runner will no longer offer the Video Mail service, effective January 13, 2008. If you have added contacts or reminders to your Road Runner Video Mail address book, please be sure that these addresses are also available in another address book, or copy them to another address book prior to January 13th, 2008. After January 13th, any information in the Video Mail application will be unavailable. "I tried it and it was PAINFUL at 384Kbps upload, which is likely why there was "modest demand," says Evans. | Re: People used video mail...? LMBO! NY Gays have known about video email forever. Well, forever in Internet time, anyway. I used Road Runner, but now I'll switch to one of the free video email services like eyejotter.com or freegabmail.com.
DavesSlave, thanks for the suggestions. Has anyone tried to send video email to troops in Iraq?

| What? I had time warner and i never knew about this? go figure low demand. Plus with the fluctuations of the time warner internet speeds around me i am not surprised people didnt use it (much). But then again they never told me they had any other services available like well even road runner email(not that i would have wanted to use it). Oh well now as i canceled the internet due to rude/poor customer service(1out of every 4 people were good), VERY badly fluctuating speeds, repair guys messing things up, hanging up on customers. I will miss the high speeds SOMETIMEs like during the day but i am very glad to take my business elsewhere. -- 3 free for you/3 free for me: Free Stock Trades : PM Me | |

| video is fun People like making videos, but it is time consuming. One-time, one to one messages take up a lot more space for the use they get than something like Youtube. I think there would be interest in some kind of private video system (besides porn!), but its probably not practical at the moment. Once we're past the "bandwidth crunch" it'll be cool | |

| Re: video is fun You can still make your own videos with cellphone cameras(low bandwidth demands) or with the cams now included on many laptops and just send them as attachments. Or you can upload them to many sites and just send your friends a link to the video.
I think technology has just bypassed the need for a dedicated video mail system.
P.S. Comcast still has a video mail system as far as I know, but I have never used it.

And is exactly why I switched to Embarq. AFAIK, you still can't get over 4500/384 anywhere in this county from TW, and with the pressure to add more HD channels, it will be a long time before they spend anything upgrading mere internet. Then they have the nerve to run "Faster than DSL!" ads. Not at my house it isn't. -- The public is a poor business manager.

| Re: Slow upload Not everyone has the money to pay for the extra premium service which is exactly what you have, and you are showing results off of. Thank you for pointing out nothing. The fact still remains - 384kbps upload which is what is offered on most of the basic package RR connections is nowhere near enough. As the majority of the customers have aforementioned pitiful upstream bandwidth, the video mail probably didn't catch on as it probably would have overall been like watching a slideshow.
On top of this, even with the marginal upgrade to 512kbps in many areas - it's still not nearly enough. Having massive downstream is fairly useless if you don't have the upload to back it up. Sure, getting that porno faster is definatly nice; but I only need a porno a day anyways.

| Re: Slow upload You have to admit, you'd rather have 3000 Downstream and 384 up, instead of 384 down and 3000 up. I have no idea why people would want to send video messages, I see these ancient people posting video replies to 12 year old kids "on the youtubes", and neither of them seems to have any idea of where they are or how to work their machine.
Sure, I love having fast upload as much as anyone else, so I don't have to wait 4 hours to send a file to someone, but massive downstream is nowhere near useless. Tell me it's useless next time you open a page and dont have to wait for the 5 mb of images to load like when we were all on dial up. Or next time you're downloading a 500 mb patch for your latest program.

| My county is not in Maine. The speeds they deign to offer you in Verizon territory are irrelevant here (and most other places outside Verizon territory). The fastest speed they offer in the entire state of NC is 8000/512. They said I could get that a year ago, but after ordering it, it provisioned at 4500/384.
Just for grins, I just went through the speed test results on this site. The fastest RR customer in my entire county tests at 7200/400, and the fastest one in my zip code is 4700/350, so I guess now they are letting my neighbors have 5000/384 (provisioned) at the premium 8000/512 price.
The fact that someone two towns away on the same cable system can get faster download tells me they are provisioning speeds by area to keep QoS at a certain level while avoiding equipment upgrades.
On the competition's side, we hear Embarq will offer us the same speed you have by the end of this month, and this goes for all Embarq customers with the capability everywhere, not just the ones in areas with fast competition. And out here in RR forsaken land, in a place Verizon would never wire for DSL much less FiOS, I have the capability. -- The public is a poor business manager.

| $109 month RR 674 down/478 up Didn't know about service either. Have had RR in Manhattan since it began after horrid DSL. But RR at night is awful. Get 9900/492 until evenings. Such a joke! Zip 10019 Plain vanilla setup, no VoIP, fast PC. Mega tech visits to no help. RR = Royal Reamer. RR and TV cable briefly (2 minutes) stopped today at 1pm.
Last Result: Download Speed: 674 kbps (84.3 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 478 kbps (59.8 KB/sec transfer rate) Example content below Speed Test that will disappear after it is run once.

| Video email still available I'm not surprised they discontinued this. It was nowhere near as good as the free service you can get from other sites like »freegabmail.com anyway.
GabMail doen't upload anything. It uses Outlook, AOL, Gmail, etc. You just record a video email with your webcam. Then it sends a link in an email. It's not a band width hog.
I've seen other video email websites (»eyejotter.com, »springdoo.com). They're a little slow, because they don't use Outlook or Gmail.
Cheers! | |
