Rogers LTE Demo Hits 98 Mbps
As Company Prepares to Launch LTE in Toronto

Rogers this week has been showing off their new LTE network in Toronto ahead of a September 28 launch, posting a YouTube video (via Mobile Syrup) showing them netting 60 Mbps down and 21 Mbps up with a Sierra Wireless U313 modem. The company was also able to obtain speeds of 98.78 Mbps down and 33.31 Mbps up using a secret new USB modem they'll launch this fall. After promising LTE service capable of speeds up to 170 Mbps for some time, Canadian cable and wireless company Rogers launched LTE service in Ottawa back in July. The service comes in four price tiers (prices are in Canadian $): 1.5GB of usage for $45, 3GB of usage for $60, 6GB of usage for $75, and 9GB of usage for $90. If your using on any of the lowest three tiers breaches the cap, you're automatically enrolled in the next-highest tier. If you're enrolled in the 9GB plan, you'll pay $10 per each additional gigabyte. As you'd expect, users in our forums note that while fast, real world speeds are nowhere near 100 Mbps.

Amazing

What you can make up ,when there is NOBODY on your network except you.
Wait till people start using it, your speeds will be "UP TO" whatever they want to make up.

Robbers is once again lying to the public.

I realize that, it's one thing when you advertise 100mb service, and when you get 2 they hide behind "UP TO". I have no issues with advertising 100mb and you get say 75, but to when it drops (and it will as people start using it) to say 20mb(1/5) qualifies because it's "UP TO" is just bullshit.

no, in most countries they do not use "up to", infact, I believe Verizon in the US stopped doing that as well.

Re: Amazing

VZ still uses it only due to overhead- especially on DSL and the fact that they can NOT control the Internet or anything past their COs.

Re: Amazing

VZ does not use "up to" on DSL anymore. They say 500-1000 kbps, 1.1-3, 3.1-5, 5.1-7, 7.1-10, 10.1-15 if I remember correctly (all but the first are a single cost tier). They guarantee 500 kbps on their lowest end plan and 1.1 Mbps on their higher end one...doesn't mean a whole lot, but it's better than "up to" or nothing.

As far as "anything past their COs" remember that Verizon is an ILEC. If they need to replace copper phone lines it is well within their power to do so. If they need to replace backhauls from DSLAMs it is well within their power to do so.

As for them not controlling the Internet, that's true,, to a point. Verizon DSL ties directly into AS701, a Tier 1 internet backbone. A backbone which, to be honest, I've NEVER seen congested on any routes to other Tier 1s, which can generally get to any point on the Internet within a few hops.

In short, barring crappy telephone lines (and resultant sync speed decreases), Verizon's service will deliver 100% of what you're paying for 99.9% of the time. This is from experience.

Considering what they are charging, what are you going to use that speed for? Email? Anything else will eat through those data blocks in no time at all.

If in the real work it did got 100 mpbs it would not matter.
1.5GB of usage for $45
3GB of usage for $60
6GB of usage for $75
9GB of usage for $90
These prices are a joke.
$30 a GB??? How could any government allow a company to mark up a price of a GB with something like a 3,000,000% margin.
This is why government must ban usage based billing and only allow ISPs to charge by speed of the connection like almost every ISP has done from 1995 to about 2011.

LOL
Even in the US it is not illegal for a government to regulate private business. Most large ISPs get government subsidies for projects anyways and should be regulated when there is no competition.

ISPs in this country are still monopolies/duopolies and they are in Canada also. They get away with charging way more than a great margin. 30,000,000% markup is insane for bandwidth.
It is bad enough companies are using usage based billing when their costs do not justify it.

The people have a right to use their government to prevent the people from getting taken advantage of.

Re: Amazing

the Gov't has no right to intervene in private business matters. And you have options just like others. The fact is nobody wants to change to those options.

For example in Chicago you have the following options plus more:

ATT (landline and Mobility)
Verizon Wireless
T-Mobile USA
Sprint
Clear (internet)
Virgin Mobile (internet and cell)
Boost (cell)
Nextel (cell)
Page Plus (cell)
WOW (cable/internet/phone)
Comcast (cable internet phone)
+ others

Others have similar options and may have more than you.

those companies do NOT have a monopoly (meaning ONE) or duopoly (meaning 2) status on anything. A couple maybe larger than the rest but you have options.

And a private business has the right to make a profit. And you are always free to take your business else wear if you don't agree. That's called Free Enterprise and Free Market. And the last I knew- Cell phone providers provided access to the CELLULAR voice market- internet is an add on they put with it. It used to be charged per minute off your voice minutes the same as text messages where. And as i've said before- they can always go back to that way and kill off unlimited voice and make their $$$ that way.

We have 3 options in Canada.

Bell
Rogers (or Shaw/Videotron)
Telus

Thats it... So exactly who are we to choose from when we have them all offering the exact same deals for the exact same prices with no regulation as to how much they're allowed to charge. Internet these days are a requirement to most people and should be looked at the same as Hydro, Water and Heating and should be regulated as such.

Sure those companies have the right to make a profit but that profit should be reasonable and not outragous. We the consumer are being screwed by companies that give us no options but to continue to buy their service or go without and they know in this day and age we CAN'T go without.

If you live in Toronto, Vancouver, or Ottawa you also have Wind Mobile and Mobilicity. In Saskatchewan, there is SaskTel; and in Quebec there is Videotron.

Sorry most ISPs are not comparable.
Landlines and wireless and satellites cannot be compared.
They are different, thus have drastically different pricing.
Then in each category ISPs use different technologies which which do not provide the same service.

In each category people are lucky to have a choice of two ISPs.
Most only get one. If you want the fastest speeds you would rather have a landline than wireless. If you are mobile you would rather have wireless. If you have no choice of anything else you choose satellite.

Anyways we the people have every right to use our government to protect us from being taken advantage of when it comes to things that most americans need.
It is why we have the FDA, EPA, OSHA, IRS, SEC, Utility commissions, state groups, laws, etc.
The people have every right to control private companies through government regulation.
If there was true capitalism we would all have unlimited internet.

1. Voice traffic is too cheap now for anyone to kill off unlimited. They wouldn't make any money that way because people would jsut flock to providers who do unlimited voice, like CricKet.

As for telecom in general, you overstate the competition...let's take my market as an example...just outside Denver:

--Wireline internet (wireless is capped/overages/throttled)--
CenturyLink
Comcast (or US Cable, partially owned by Comcast with worse rates and non-overlapping service areas)

--Mobile Wireless (not counting MVNOs because they can only price at what the parent carrier will let them, and because none offer a compelling deal on cellular data)--
Verizon
AT&T
Sprint
T-Mobile
CricKet

Narrowing things down to providers who actually offer "4G" speeds in the area you get:
Verizon
T-Mobile

--Fixed Wireless--
SkyBeam (still has caps/throttling)

--Satellite (caps)--
HughesNet
WildBlue

So, unless you want your usage throttled beyond 5-50GB (depending on whether you're talking about Verizon or SkyBeam), you've got two choices: the phone company or the cable company. I have yet to meet someone who uses their cell phone as their primary Internet source for more than the time it takes to get CenLink DSL or Comcast cable installed. Why? Because 'net usage patterns make everything else unworkable/uncompetitive.

This is despite the fact that both Verizon and T-Mobile have 20MHz of spectrum in this market dedicated to 4G (T-Mobile may have more), and the fact that both have PLENTY of backhaul capacity at this point. Competition isn't working, and new entrants can't just build their own LTE network from scratch because there's no spectrum available that isn't owned by someone who won't give it up (ahem, AT&T).

Your response might be that I should build my own wireless ISP if I think everyone else is doing it wrong. Okay, can I have $50k in seed capital to get things started? No? I thought so.

Shafted?

I thought At&t and Verizon were trying to shaft people...

9GB/$90 = $10/GB
6GB/$75 = $12.50/GB
3GB/$60 = $20/GB
1.5GB/$45 = $30!!/GB

If you use less, you (technically) pay more...

I feel so sorry for anyone in Canada that has to use Rogers...

Re: Shafted?

I was just looking into this for the IT dept I work in and we are not going to use their LTE network here in Toronto when it's launched simply because it's far too damned expensive. That's 100 accounts less that Rogers would had had if they were charging a fair price.

I expected to have to buy new hardware but a more expensive plan? pffffffft. Not a chance.

No doubt

It will be blazing fast for a few months just like the Bell/Telus HSPA network was for a little over a year after it launched.

The Bellus HSPA network was still in decent shape when I got onto it 9 months after launch, 4-6 mbps all day every day. Then more and more people migrated from CDMA onto it...gradually it has gotten slower and slower now I am lucky to see 0.5 mbps during the day, it is usually 0.1-0.3. Just ran a speed test here around lunch time and got 87 kbps down and 65 kbps. Browsing is slow and streaming music barely works, it cuts out often and I have to hope it catches a brief hit of speed to buffer a song.

LTE might have more spetral efficiency to keep it from getting this bad (I have to look into it) but right now I'm seeing a 50x reduction since the network got crowded. As a guess a similarly crowded LTE network might deliver 2 mbps, better than 0.1 mbps but a far cry from the numbers they brag about.

Re: No doubt

I'm on "Canada's FASTEST 3G+ Network" and just did a test
4.15mb down .97 up, so much for "UP TO" 21mb.
