Roku Now Offering Netflix in HD
Software update over the next few weeks
by Karl Bode Tuesday 23-Dec-2008 tags: Video · business · alternatives · content · HDTV
Roku, developer of a settop video play that allows Netflix subscribers to stream digital content to their television via broadband, has announced that the device now supports high definition content. Over the next several weeks, the $100 device will be updated automatically with software that integrates a new compression system into the player. Netflix content streamed via the Xbox 360 was already available in high-definition.

Not too impressed with the Tivo HD Quality

Sure it says "HD", but the netflix streamed HD videos aren't that great of quality. I didn't really see a difference between SD and "HD" streaming.

Re: Not too impressed with the Tivo HD Quality

I havent seen the HD through this particular box...but i beg to differ on what i've seen on the xbox360....the HD, while not bluray or hddvd, was quite good and certainly better than SD...from what I saw. The big drawback i had was the amount of HD content that was available.

agreed, the HD is better than the SD on the 360 but they need more content!

Re: Not too impressed with the Tivo HD Quality

I will agree that there is a large difference between HD and SD via the xbox.

One thing I will say, you have to get 3 bars during the BW test for the content to show "presented in HD". If you only get 2 (like I did before upgrading from a 4mb Comcast account) the quality is still SD and looks rather poor.

I'm not sure you've seen HD streaming then since the difference between SD and HD is night and day. Yes, it's no where near Blu-Ray quality, but with a 3800 kbps that's to be expected.

That said, the TiVo does have a tendency to lock up completely when streaming Netflix and many videos don't play back correctly (audio/video out of synch, stutter, etc).

contemplating

I was contemplating purchasing a Roku box, mostly due to the fact that I don't want to pay for a Gold account for xbox live to do the same type of Netflix viewing. Any opinions about the box, Good - Bad?

Can one view more than the Netflix "Watch Instantly" movies with this box?

Re: contemplating

From what I've seen in ROKU forums, they are getting ready to add Hulu HD, and other Internet video sources to the box.

OK, then it might be interesting for $100. I'm holding out until that happens just in case.

It is a very good unit. Universally excellent reviews. About as plug and play as it gets. The SD streams are almost DVD quality if you've got a good connection (solidly 3 megabits or better). I've got it connected to my 42" LCD TV via HDMI and it's ready for the HD content as soon as the firmware updates.

Answering the other question, the "watch instantly" content is what shows up on this box. You manage it from your normal Netflix account via computer. There is evidently other content coming soon as noted above.

I'm not at all impressed with the "watch instantly" selection.

Netflix movies in HD digital stream

I was one of the first ROKU users and HD beta test participants. ROKU box supports 720p and Netflix HD
movies I have been watching have the same quality as
the up-converted DVDs (1080p). I've watched countless
movies since July and I've been an avid supporter and fan
of both Netflix and ROKU. If you are a Netflix member or
thinking about becoming one, you have to get a ROKU box.
It just completes Netflix.

Re: Netflix movies in HD digital stream

Love my Roku box as well. Makes me constantly question why I still pay for cable tv service, that I watch even less now. Just wish there was more content like others, but even with what is there being that there is no extra cost for it, cept the box itself, I love it. Wish this box could tap into like Hulu.com as well, then I would cancel my cable for sure.

enjoy it until the caps hit

with your average "HD" download/stream being in the 6 GB range, once caps become commonplace how often are people going to use this?

Re: enjoy it until the caps hit

Imagine how many HD movies one have to watch a month to reach Comcast 250gig cap. I don't do much downloading of any other media, so I doubt that I will ever go over the limit.

Re: enjoy it until the caps hit

But that's if you didn't download anything else for the rest of the month ... I bet a lot of people will have issues with new technological products coming out that will need the use of "streaming" and having it conflict with the download caps that ISPs are implementing now days.

Well HD movies are 6 GB so that would be about 40 if you did nothing else. Netflix you can watch as much as you want right? Also that's Comcast. TW is talking about caps in the 5-40 GB range. At&t is testing caps that are between 20-150 GB per month. I'm pretty sure most people do not just use their computer for watching NetFlix only.

Novaman

@comcast.net
I have Comcast w/250 GB limit. That's enough to download
60 HD movies a month, which I doubt, I'll ever do. With
AT&T one will probably go over the limit and pay more for
broadband use. It's just who your provider is.

Re: enjoy it until the caps hit

If you check your math, it's actually about 41 HD movies at 6GB a movie.

Caps may become an issue

I've had a Roku for about a month now and am impressed. I've been using it about an hour daily and only racked up about 3GB since the beginning of the month. Not sure what HD will do but looking at the HD lineup on Netflix it currently is very poor IMHO.
Personally I have two broadband connections so I can spread my usage between the two to probably avoid the caps. For now.

Does the player keep a total of how much has been downloaded either total or each month?

problems..

I don't think it could be fixed or do well without these 2 things..

the
- x264 codec
- ability to download the HD (and not have those frequent pauses)

Roku

Roku is a great company when it comes to the software/firmware support of their products.

I might take a look at this product. I've been hesitant to use the xbox 360 with Netflix to watch movies because the console's fan is WAY TOO LOUD. The xbox 360 is a horrific assault on the audible senses.
